The Altoids tins are much cheaper if you buy them at the grocery store, Wal Mart, etc. Online, empty they run $4, but, you can buy them full of mints for about $2.50. When they go on sale I've seen them go all the way down to a buck. But out that way, throw out the minute and save at least half.

I have put together several kits made from tins. 2x a year I buy a serento collar for my dog. It comes in a wonderful tin that can hold 24 half pans and deep enough to include a sponge. On all the tins, I use the lid for mixing. It's a great alternative pallet and a great way to recycle those tins. Tfs. Just recently discovered your channel.

for pans you can flip over a lego piece (pick the size you want) and use those as pans. i know I can get impatient and having 2 boys I have lego EVERYWHERE. but they work well in a crunch.

I decided on the Van Gogh 18 half pan and iit comes with a #6 brush, 2 10 ml tubes-Chinese White and Paynes Gray- NO BLACK! I chose it over the Prima Marketing sets which just felt to "crafty" to me. No info on the company. I am not going out sketching, just has a price point, lol. My Birthday present to me, and Aqua Journal and a GOOD set of paints. So excited. I love your reviews and to watch you paint!

Great video! Really enjoyed it. I'm always interested to see what sort of kits people use. - I use one of those Newman's/Altoids DIY set-ups. I call it "My pocket rainbow". Keep twelve colours in it, primarily Schmincke Horadam, but also one or two Daniel Smiths and Winsor Newton pans. I just love how portable a little kit like that is. Slip it in your pocket with a water brush and you’re good to go. Little Khadi 100% cotton watercolour sketchbook in my backpack, and Robert is very much your mothers brother!

I love all your Sennelier and schmincke palette's. I only bought a Schmincke palette (24 full pans) once, I usually buy 15 ml tubes. I always have my custom-made palette with me, it holds a mix of D.Smith and Schmincke mixed full and half pans, in my opinion, the best of the two. It has 6 deep wells and a mixing plate and there is a place for two watercolor brushes, one oval wash, and my two rounds, a 4H pencil and it is steady and compact. Tomorrow morning I am going to visit my old mother and she lives on a charming little island with thatched timbered houses and a charming little pond with ducks and goldfish... so I am going to be busy painting if the weather allows it :)

Great video, Marty! I have a ridiculous addiction to travel kits, despite the fact that my watercolor skills are nowhere near high enough that I'd feel comfortable sketching in public. I covet that Sennelier 14-halfpan set so much, even though I have the metal medium-sized box that came with 18 colors (and which I tweaked so I could cram more colors in). I have more than enough sets and colors, but I still get all OooohAhhhhWantWantWant when I see a new one. 😆

LOL Ali, I feel the same way about these travel kits. I'll just add that it isn't so much in the kit, but in using it. Don't worry about your skill level, life is waaaay too short for that. Get out there (wear your sunglasses if you need to) and sketch. Have a great weekend! ~Marty

Great video Marty! A lot of great tips. When I travel, I usually take with me one 8x5 Beta and one 8x5 Zeta from Stillman and Birn, a small pencil case with a few pencils, some type of waterproof India ink pen, and a couple water brushes, one of my watercolor kits (dried in pans)(either my 12, 18, or 24 set), and a dish rag to clean my brushes. I always use a bag to carry my supplies so nothing gets ruined. I understand only taking what you need but I never understood the person who is obsessed with smallness. It's not that difficult to carry a small bag with your stuff in it. However, I do understand enjoying the novelty of a shirt pocket sized sketching kit because its is always fun to catch a reaction from someone when you flip it out and start painting. Something that bothers me about the micro kits is that since you have less colors you also need to mix more and they don't provide enough space for all the mixing so while its more convenient on one hand it becomes an inconvenience on the other. Kind of makes a slightly larger set a little more worth it. Thanks for the vid Marty, I always enjoy hearing your take on things. -Pete

Hi Pete - Great to hear from you my friend. You basically go out with what I go out with. I always bring a rag as well. I like the slightly bigger kit for the same reasons you do. It's easier to mix colors. In the end it isn't so much about the kit as it is using it. :-) Have a great weekend Pete. Thanks for watching. ~Marty

Thanks..I have made quite a few watercolor kits from a variety of tins, chocolate boxes, etc. I recently found half pans for 12 cents on eBay... And using tube paints saves allot of money.. One thing I found some years ago is that Richeson makes a micro tin watercolor set with round 1/8 pan chips of children's paint. They are $2 or $3 and I bought two for my grandkids as stocking stuffers with cute train, truck, plane sort of bright color tins. For myself I popped out the little tabs of kid paint and used dots of Daniel Smith watercolors in the 8 round indentations. This is TINY - 1 3/4" x 2 1/4" tin, with a clamshell mixing area enameled white. That and a water brush fits in any pocket and so I tend to have it on me all the time. It's like finding pocket space for a Zippo lighter, I've always got color.

Great review, Marty! I especially enjoyed seeing your paper selections. I recently bought a Prima Marketing watercolor set from Amazon just for the exceptionally nice metal tin ($20), took out the paints, bought some empty half pans from Amazon (fulfillled by Jackson's UK for 29 cents each), and filled the tin with 21 half pans of my most essential tube colors. That's my favorite portable kit. My 21 color choices are based on Jane Blundell's 14-color ultimate mixing palette plus 8 of my favorite colors I definitely don't want to be without, like Sennelier's Opera Rose and Daniel Smith's Undersea Green. I don't put Jane Blundell's choice of Daniel Smith's Buff Titanium in a palette. If I want it, I carry the tube with me because that paint turns into a crumbly rock when it dries.

This was an excellent and informative video Marty, Well done!! Here's a tip for loose pans, when I checked to see if the pans in my Schmincke set would fallout they did, so I put a couple of Glue Dots on the bottom of every pan and they now stay perfectly, and when I need to change any pan all I do is take something thin and metal to slide under and pull the empty pan out, the glue dots are super strong so really all someone would need is the tiny size. Or if someone doesn't want to replace it but refill it, just squeeze some paint from the tube! I hope someone can find this tip useful, just another quick thing Marty, if you've never seen an episode of Color In Your Life on KZread than I would strongly suggest checking it out, it's an awesome series showcasing artists in many places all over and they're slowly expanding further, it's great and I love it so I thought I'd pass on the info, enjoy and take care!

Thanks Hermoine - Are you talking about the standard Schmincke metal kit? If so, did you know you can bend the metal tabs on each side of the row and the pans will stay locked in? Sometimes those tabs can come open and the pans will slip or fall out. I should make a video showing that one of these days. Also, I think your glue dots idea will work nicely. Thank you for the tip on Color In Your Life, I will definitely check it out, sounds cool. ~Marty

Yep, I have the 24 whole pan set of Schmincke, as for the metal tabs on the sides they don't work very well. Maybe I'm not tightening them enough, that could be the problem anyways the glue dots work perfect for me. I think it would be great to have a video on that, as for me I'm afraid of breaking the tabs, than there is the fact that I'm not very strong so I do think others would find it helpful though. I really think you'll like the program it's amazing and we get to see how the artists approach their work, anyhow take care and stay out of the heat! Enjoy your weekend!

Hi Tisha - Thanks for the note. Since my channel is focused on Art Supplies and reviews, I've just managed to accumulate a lot of them. I have too much really, and every couple of months I purge, by giving away art supplies to my local elementary schools (arts are in peril) and giveaways on the channel. This was a great video! You explained so much. I am new to watercolor and I have been watching allot of watercolor you tubes and I have picked up on the fact I can get away with 6 colors.....the 3 primaries in warm and the 3 primaries in cool. I am having a hard time finding out how to tell warm from cool colors....would you consider doing a video on that please?

Another pocket kit I discovered back in 1978 or 79 is the Winsor & Newton Field Box, it's about the size of a thick cigarette pack of 100s and fits in a shirt pocket. Comes in both Cotman and Artist/Professional versions, plastic, grey or navy blue case shows which. It was expensive - $60 for the Cotman (good quality student grade) version, but well worth it because it included everything. Flat water bottle, white, two more flip out mixing areas, small pocket brush, water cup that comes off to open the kit and snaps back on the end upright, tiny sea sponge for bigger washes and strokes. I thought of it as a silly luxury item but wound up using it up more times than I could count, replacing the half pans over and over. I now have the dark blue Artists' version, color assortment is a bit different but structure is the same. It became a serious convenience along with post card size 140lb watercolor blocks, my favorite sketch size for those pocket kits. It stands up well to time too, I had that Cotman set for about 25 years before giving it to a friend and upgrading when an Artist grade Field Box went on sale.

Hi Robert - Sounds like you got a LOT of mileage from your Cotman kit. $60 well spent from the sound of it. Modern kits don't have much need for the water anymore with the advent of water pens, like those I highlighted in the video, but I remember when they were essential. Those blocks are a good size do know our micro-sketches. ~Marty

Purr thanks! Yeah, I do use the water brushes more now but the limit in that is size and type of brush. I now carry the Cotman one in my pockets vest all the time and replaced some half pans with favorite colors. It's easy to customize many sets!

Wow Marty!!! This was awesome!! 😃👏 I have the sennelier medium tin set. I purchased the half pan 12+6 free set for $60 available on Jerry's & Blick. I love it! I can squeeze in a total of 26 in the tin. The cost for more half pans range from 5$ to $13 depending on color. But you can definitely do so much with just the 18...no black or white taking up space. I definitely recommend the set and is more the 1/2 the cost of the schmincke 12 set. I just wanted to throw that option out there too. 😉 A very informative video. I just went and bought some of the Canson Montval waterboards you showed. I bought 5 of the 16" x 20" for $15 on Blick. You enable me Marty...lol 😂

Hi Valarie - LOL, you cracked me up with the, "enable me". You got great deals all around and I agree with your on the costs for Sennelier versus Schmincke. The Schmincke tend to be more expensive on the whole, but I only buy them when they're on sale and they are my everyday paints. I love the Sennelier, they're so expressive and wonderfully loaded with glowing pigments. Have fun with your Canson paper, it's excellent. Have a great week Valaire. ~Marty

+Owings Art Marty, I am glad I could crack you up...a good crack up a day is healthy.😉 Is there a big difference between the two or are they close enough that the price difference is in reputation and history? You have so many different paints/sets, do you find a way to use them all or do some just sit, especially the ones that did hold up to your expectations? I find myself watching now asking myself, do I need those or can I do the same things with what I have...I am reigning myself in. 😆 I hope you have a beautiful week!!

  • @owingsart

Valarie Connell Hi Valarie - Yes there are some significant differences between the paints. The Schmincke to me are much more precise, technical and consistent. The Sennelier's are glowing, artistic and wonderfully expressive. Maybe it's the French versus German thing, but they are both beautiful in their own right. I use most every supply I own at one point or another, but eventually I accumulate enough to give them away or donate them to the local homeless shelter or schools. I hope you're not reigning in too much :-) Thank you much ~Marty

And most Watercolorists wouldn't carry a white in their palette, but I come from oil painting and I use white for a lot of different applications. Hope this helps. ~Marty

Owings Art Order arrived today. Amazing paints twelve half pans, they rewet easily and delicious colours, bought three small tubes. They are so far my favourite set. Annoying the case held the pans well in their wrapping but they slide about once that's removed so that they stick to the brush when dried a bit, Will have to put blue Tac under. To make up the set I ordered m graham only one supplier here. Order 6 get a discount, they arrive tomorrow. Guess what I forgot to order empty pans!!!

Owings Art Hi final word. Love Schminke and m graham. Very impressed with the schminke pans as to rewetting I think I will gradually switch to these two. I still feel inhibited with expensive gear but for my third year painting I can tell the difference and it's my indulgence. Oh took your advice on the pans, it worked - still added bits of blue tac to be sure I think it has a different name in US.

Hi Marty, i so enjoyed watching this video! The big Schmincke box is such a beauty, isn't it!? I love the idea to create your own pocket kit and the micro one made by your friend Archana is just too cute! It's something i totally love about watercolours that you can have a lot of fun with a minimum of materials. It's so uncomplicated. I have heard a lot of good things about the Stillman & Birn books. I am looking forward to getting the Soft Cover version which will soon be available here in Germany. As i'm planning to get some more Daniel Smith paints i am wondering how to organize them. Most probably i will end up with the Mijello Fusion Palette with 18 wells. Actually i prefer the nice metal tins but with the pans, especially the 1/2 pans i'm always a bit afraid of ruining my brushes. The Mijello palette has very flat wells which i think will prevent my brushes from damage. PS: Great portrait at 16:28! I love the think bubbles, if they can be called like this!? At first i thought it's Sigmund Freud but i think i'm wrong! PPS: Have a great day!

Something else that could work is to use a 7 day medi-minder; but, you would have to bring something in which to mix colors together. A 7 day medi-minder would allow you to take a warm and cool version of each primary color plus a neutral color like quinacridone burnt orange. A styrofoam meat tray that's been washed really well might work and it's light weight.

If the metal section that holds the pans can pop out of the box (it's like a little tray you can usually pull out), you can remove it and you'll have more space for your pans on the bottom of the box. You can glue them, use tape, or magnets to hold the pans in place. Magnets are probably the best option though since you can remove the pans if needed.

Marty, I have a KZread channel for crafters with physical limitations. I'm trying to find a watercolor kit that I can use and wondered if you could give me your input. I have trouble with watercolor kits as I have a half pan kit and I can't keep the paint from contaminating the watercolors around it because my hands aren't particularly accurate where they put the brush. I'd like to find a set for a newer water colorist that would allow me to put my brush in one color and not have the next color right beside it. I don't particularly want a student kit, hoping you might have an idea. Lindsay gave me an idea, but hers was 16" x 20" and that's too big ...I'd prefer one that's about the size of the large travel set. Any ideas would be really appreciated. Sandy Parker

  • @owingsart

    @owingsart

    7 жыл бұрын

Hi Sandy - Took me a few days and some experimenting, but I think I have something that will work for you. I had to try a few things, but I think I finally got the right combination. So here is what I did. I took a medium kit (tin) and used full pans instead of half pans. I positioned the pans horizontally in the kit (using the existing tab holders, which hold the pans in). I then left a gap (about a half inch) between the pans. That seemed to give plenty of room between the pans so you can avoid contaminating the other colors. Using the full pans allows greater area, so if your having trouble getting the brush tip into the smaller pans, this should help out a lot. This leaves room for only about 8 colors, but I think that might be enough to just start with. Let me know what you think. ~Marty

Marty, Thanks so much for your ideas, I really appreciate you taking so much time to really think this through for me. In the mean time, Lindsay recommended some watercolor brands for card makers and mentions the Kuretake Gansai Tambi Watercolors. I watched your video on them (fabulous as always) and saw Kristina Werner use the set of 36 and she removed the "pans" from the box when she used them. Since they are already larger, and removable, I ordered a set from Amazon. Your 7 rating was what I was looking for, to convince me to get them (as I'm never going to be able to watercolor well,) but love the medium as it's great for cards. It was so nice of you to go to all of that effort for me and I absolutely love your channel and was happy to see you live on a video with Lindsay maybe 6 months ago (or longer, time passes quickly.) I'll do a review for others with hand and wrist issues and will make sure to send people to your site for your review from an artist's perspective. Thanks so much...Sandy

When you speak of 1/2 pan, how many ml will that be? I'm trying to make a watercolor kit and see how inexpensive can it get. So far, i'm using a plastic pills case from The Dollar Tree with has 21 pill boxes. i will be measuring in mls and will fill with watercolor paints that come in tubes. also purchased some watercolor brushes and cut them to size so they will fit in the box.

I think a half pan is 20 ml and a full pan is 40 ml.

I have decided to buy tube paint rather than pans, and my next project is a 14 pan micro thin business card holder tin with 3 brands inside. It is the most economical when one begins to learn what they enjoy about different brands and the color options! Isn't it all so much fun? I had to watch this again.

Did you get this year's custom set of schmincke watercolors from Wet Paint? I love the colors in the set this year for mixing; last year was pretty, but not as practical for how I paint.

I love Wet Paint. Did you go to the sidewalk sale this year? I like going to the sale because I get to see people who I have never seen before. Also, I have noticed that Wet Paint not only has great staff, but they also have great prices for a brick and mortar store.

Can you really put colors from every brand in a selfmade box? What is with mixing colors? Does it work if one color is with honey and the other one with oxgal? (Sorry for the english...)
