I love the Cotman Sketchers Pocket box as my portable palette but I have re-filled most pans now, as they ran out with artist grade paint from tubes. I have also modified my sketch box by adding 5 foam board dividers to the unused brush well to create an additional six small colour wells that I have filled with my lesser used but must have colours. This has given me a very comprehensive 18 colour palette - identical to the colour palette I use every day at home.

👍 👍🏻 👍🏽 *Tip* : get an old tube sock, cut the tip off, and put it on your wrist....use this as a wiper , for your brush....this way you don't need to use a ton of napkins. cheers 5:41 No such thing as a bad painting / sketch .

Thanks! You are the first person saing that :) I have started to wonder if people think it's offencive as the "take a hike" can be said in offencive way. But I hope you all can see that I mean it in a very positive way :)

I have given the paintbrushes you use to my father for Christmas to encourage him to paint some more on holiday this year. Your pictures show how well they can work. The 'go take a hike' comes across as a wide awake suggestion to me, it is charming as you say it. Have a great 2017!

"Go take a hike" is often associated with the meaning "get lost", but it's quite a mild version. I'm sure everyone can tell it's meant to be a fun / cheeky catch-phrase :) I would probably say "go for a hike", which doesn't have that association, but it's your catch-phrase now; no need to change it :D

Happy to see you doing something you enjoy. Live Big, while you are young because living big when you are older means a different thing. I have never been able to draw or paint while traveling because my family (kids, in-laws) are not patient enough for me to take an hour. Cell phones didn't exist then. So, I am very happy to see you doing this. It is vicarious happiness, but I smile just the same. Best to you in your travels. Hike on!

I've been doing some fishing to occupy some time between setting up my tent and sleeping when backpacking, but I've never really enjoyed fishing (maybe if I was better at it?). When I saw this video I got excited about having a new way to spend quiet time in the woods! Thank you. I showed this to one of my sons, who is much more of an artist than I am. He put together a kit modeled on yours and gave it to me for Christmas this year! Yay! I'm looking forward to playing with the paints a bit while waiting for the snow to melt so I can get back on the trail with my new hobby.

Thank you for ths tip to use water color brushes that I have never heard or seen before! I guess in winter cold temperatures the water will freeze maybe adding some other solvent to keep the liquid from freezing? But of course you can always use your camera to take the pictures to then later on maybe at home be painted! So again big THANK to you for your nice YT Video that is well done and inspirational and keeping us all informed what to bring with us if we like to do some water color paint work during our hikes! Brillant work of you! Wishing you much inspiration in your many creative art works!

Nice video. I liked your art work. Those little pocket water colour sets are handy, as are the water pencils. Have you ever used ink coloured pencils? They are similar to water colour pencils, but the colours are permanent when wetted and less prone to damage. The colours do tend to be petty vivid and this may not please traditional water colourists. Keep up the good work!

Understood. pencil colouring isn't everyone's style and I am aware that water colours have qualities of their own. The ink colours can also be obtained in little blocks (like watercolours) and have the advantages of permanence and not "muddying" if you overpaint them. You are doing some nice work with your present system and I won't try to influence you. Happy trails!
