Putting camshaft back in timing - BMW N42/N46 Chain Rail Replacement [PART #2]

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

ATTENTION: Putting the exhaust camshaft back in timing is only TEMPORARY so I can lock the camshaft and remove the VANOS bolt! Please watch the whole series to see the complete repair procedure.
In this video series I diagnose and repair a broken chain rail guide and jumped chain on a BMW N42/N46 engine in an E46 3 Series car.
PART #2:
0:00 A cunning plan to jump the chain back to correct position
1:42 Removing the chain tensioner
3:57 Manually jumping the chain
7:37 Checking engine timing before removing VANOS bolts
Engine had reduced power and rattling noises after acceleration. Fuel consumption was also increased.
INPA software showed these error codes:
- 2782 CDKPH - Nockenwellengeber Auslass, Lage der Phasenflanken oder Einbaulage außerhalb Toleranz (2782 Camshaft Sensor Exhaust)
- 27BB CDKANWS Nockenwellensteuerung Auslass-VANOS, Anschlagadaption außerhalb gültigem Bereich (27BB Exhaust Camshaft Control)
INPA analog value 4 also showed that outlet VANOS unit position was incorrect.
I then removed the valve cover and found that top part of the chain rail guide was broken and the chain jumped two teeth on the exhaust camshaft.
This was most probably because of a combination of weak (still original) chain tensioner and old brittle plastic chain rail guide.
I then proceeded with putting the exhaust camshaft back in to correct position so I could lock the camshafts with the locking tools and remove VANOS bolts. That enabled me to remove VANOS units, VANOS solenoids and finally the broken chain rail guide. I also found the plastic guide was broken in two places and managed to get all the broken pieces out of the engine.
Next I installed new chain guide rail and did the timing. I also replaced the brake booster vacuum pump seals in the process.
Then I put everything back together and confirm the repair with scanning the car wit INPA again.

hiya bud, followed ur complete vanos system removal and put it back in with the zip ties locking tools etc, as had to replace a retainer spring, however my engine is seriously out of time now, watching ur timing video, when the locking tool fits the exhaust camshaft, the intake shaft is 90 degrees clockwise to far, and with the engine top dead centre, the exhaust shaft is 180 upside down, and the flywheel only locks when the engine is opposite of TDC

The older type chain tensioner can be identified without removing it. The 27mm nut is quite thick on the older style about 1cm. Also when you take it out, you will see that the new style has a much smaller oil pressure relief hole further up the shaft than the old version. The one you removed was an updated tensioner.

Hi, If the camshaft is not in the correct timing, can the engine start with 1-2 seconds delay and have some small vibrations and high fuel consumption? mine it has this issue ( camshaft position sensor - sensor is ok). 1 year ago I replaced the engine and I assume that mechanic didn't put the camshaft in timing. I wanted to find out if this is my issue ( wrong timing) .

Hi, great video and really enjoyed it! However isn't this method only temporary? If the upper guide rail is broken then the chain can jump again in the future?

YES! Of course. This is only part #2 in this repair. The camshafts must be in timing so you can remove the VANOS bolts with the locking tools. Next steps are in parts 3, 4, ...

Hi. There is something i dont get. Can't you just unscrew the VANOS bolt to put the camshaft back in timing? Then tight it in specs with a new bolt?

Yes, you can. But I wanted to see how many teeth the chain jumped.

Hi friend thanks for the lessons. Please help me i have a bmw e90 n46 in my shop service and probably broke rail my doubt is the crankshaft not turn it. When happens with n46 could be pistons hit or lock in the valve head? Or just change the chain kit and the engine will works normally?. Can help me please

Not sure if I understand your issue... If the chain jumped a couple of teeth on the sprocket, then is should be OK. It the chain jumped more than 3 teeth, there could be an issue with the valves. From what I know, the N46 is an interference engine and pistons will hit the valves if they are opened and you rotate the crankshaft (camshafts disconnected or badly mistimed).

@@sillasyahoo1 you could use INPA software to check VANOS position, but the only definitive way is to remove valve cover and use the timing tools.

My e46 n42b18 shakes at idle and throws out the misfire cylinder 1 and 3 error, we checked all the sensors, vacuum, replaced the chain, maf sensor, spark plugs, but the problem was not detected. The car works nicely and goes fast but ... :-( Sorry for my bad English.

Check for wear on valvetronic eccentric shaft. I have read on this site bimmerprofs.com/defects-valvetronic-components/, that the lobes on that intermediate shaft can wear out in the idle position. Since the whole valvetronic assembly has very tight tolerances, this wear might result in decrease of valve lift in idle and cause misfires. Another possible cause can also be valve/seat damage, incorrect timing of intake camshaft, ... Did you check the compression on all cylinders?

@@BimmerZen The compression on the cylinders is 9, is that good? I checked the camshaft well, it's just that I haven't checked those valves yet
