Diagnosing the RATTLE and STALLING - N42/N46 VALVETRONIC Retainer Spring Replacement [PART #1]

In this video series I diagnose and replace a broken retainer torsion spring that holds the intermediate lever pressed against the VALVETRONIC eccentric shaft on a N42 engine.

After chain replacement ( • N42/N46 Chain Replacem... ) I noticed that there are some ticking noises during throttle body to VALVETRONIC operation transition. During this transition the engine stalls but then recovers to "normal" idle RPM.
This car is 2001 E46 316ti Compact BMW with 200.000km on the odometer.

    Wow, your patience is amazing! Thank you so much for the videos, somehow my n42b18 with 256k is holding up (only replaced chain and tensioner) fingers crossed. Looking forward to how your are going to fix this problem. Good luck!

    @@BimmerZen rip i work at a junk yard and u just took parts from 2 n42 i could have sent you for free used vanos units but they are gone now you where a bit late :( xD

    @@magnus3885 Wow, that is so generous of you! I will try to open the VANOS unit and see what's going on. Might only be some dirt preventing the locking pin to drop. If I see any wear or damage I'll replace it, so I'm definitely interested in sourcing a spare VANOS unit.     @@BimmerZen sure :D i had to take a coil for the sparkplug turns out they brake very easy it fell from the bumper and went right in two xD

    Buenas sigo tu canal con un 316ti se partieron los muelles intermedios al girar manualmente he visto lo mismo que el video el vanos admisión se retrasa debería sustituir gracias

    Wow! I have this engine actually and a problem of hesitation when flooring it down! Was it like a 2 or 3 times accelerating and decelerating when you floored it? I’m so scared! Please answer back sir..

    I’m having valvetronic motor issues and I am replacing the motor I have heard online that when replacing the motor the car will auto Auto calibrate is this true for the n42 engine?

    Initialisation happens if Valvetronic ECU detects that the eccentric shaft is not in the expected position. This will almost ceirtanly happen after servo motor replacement.

    @@BimmerZen okay so replaced the motor and I think it’s a wiring issue I am having because the inpa code is saying there is a short detected in the vvt wiring is there any possible place I can get a wiring diagram/ where is the fuse for the vvt

    Hello i have n42b20 engine on my E46 Compact, however i have idle problems and an oil conspumption 1l per 1000km, can you tell me where to start diagnosing the problem. The idle is going from 700rpm to 1100 and in one moment it will raise till 2000, 2500rpm and stays about 30 secs and then it drops to 800rpm. Thank you in advance

    Oil consumption problem is probably bad valve stem seals or/and bad ccv. I would first replace the CCV and hoses (if still original). Clogged, malfunctioning CCV and broken CCV hoses can cause a lot of issues. Regarding the idle... you need to scan the car with INPA to see if there are any error codes. First check for vacuum leaks. Check intake boot, Vanos solenoid orings, valvetronic sensor connector flange gasket. I removed intake boot and used a latex glove to connect air compressor hose to the throttle body. I then applied 0.5 bar of pressure to preasurise the system and sprayed soapy water on all the hoses and orings so i could hear and see bubbles forming. This is how i found all the vacuum leaks on my car. You will most probably nees to replace the valve stem seals to fix the oil consumption. You can check my other videos on how to do that.

    I recently developed valvetronic codes and limp mode when i start the car (N46) then it goes away after couple minutes of driving. When i disconnect the eccentric shaft sensor the limp mode disappears but engine light remains. Does this mean a bad shaft sensor? I tested the valvetronic motor and resistance is fine. I can also hear it priming when i turn the ignition on without any strange noises

    Hello sir, greetings from Indonesia, I have a problem with a BMW E90 N46, the scan results show a problem 276A : catalytic converter conversion 2863 : DMe valvetronic, my powerlimiter I have replaced the new servvo valvetronic motor, but it appears again after a few days of use. why? Any solution?

    I cant find any solid info on the 2863 code... Are you 100% sure you get that code? Could you post exact description of the fault? "DMe valvetronic, my powerlimiter " does not seem to be the correct wording... If the servo motor was replaced and the error is in fact regarding the servomotor, then there are two main posibilities: 1. DME output stage is faulty - can not drive the DC servomotor (DME needs to be replaced or repaired). 2. Eccentric shaft is binding and causing the DC servomotor is unable to rotate it within expected envelope. Possibly the eccentric shaft bearings are binding and need to be replaced.

    @@lisandra1957 Did you reset the codes after DC servomotor replacement? Did you initialise the Valvetronic (VVT) after?

    @@BimmerZen yes after replaced it, my mechanic has reset the code and he doing initialized by click start button once without push the brake pads & click start button again within push the brake and engine is on ( i dont know this is correct way or no), And then the engine runs normally and I have used the road for about 90 km for 2 days but the check engine starts again with same error code.

I would like to update about my BMW, after I did the initial reset before, now i have the error code 2847 DME valvetronic servomotor electric (NEW appears), 2863 Valvetronic Power Limitation & 2869 (valvetronic sluggish movement) appears. this error came suddenly after the reset it still appears with the same error code... can you help me with my problem? thank you sir 🙏

    Engine is in warmup mode for the first 1-2 min, then it transitions to valvetronic operation

    ​@@BimmerZen I have some rough idle on cold start for a couple second and the car threw a valvetronic code P1062, since that happens in warmup mode does that mean it's the eccentric shaft sensor and not the valvetronic motor ? Or am I understanding this wrong

    Zivjo. Sem slucajno opazou slovenske tablce na autu. Trenutno gledam enga bmw e46 316ti in se mal izobrazujem o vanosu in teh zadevah. Ali je res tok tezko in drago popravut vanos v teh autih kot vecina ljudi pravi in ali je tezko najdt dele za popravilo? Btw pa res dobr video kar se vanosa tice

    N42/N46 motorji imajo VANOS in Valvetronic, se pravi so precej komplicirani in posledično več težav in težji za popravljanje. Ker je dokaj kompleksen motor se jih veliko mehanikov izogiba ali pa nimajo ustreznega znanja in naredijo "po domače" in gre kaj narobe. Če se malo poglobiš v motor, ga lahko tudi sam poservisiraš oz. popraviš. Nove komponente so drage, npr VANOS enote in ekscentrična polosovina, rabljeno je težko dobiti preverjeno dobre... Če kupuješ 316ti ti svetujem, da dobro preveriš servisno zgodovino. Menjava olja na teh motorjih je najbolj kritičen element (menjano vsaj 1x letno oz na 15.000 km). Če boš imel še kakšna vprašanja, mi lahko tudi pošlješ sporočilo na email, ki ga imam v opisu YT kanala.

    Hi i just want to ask a question would really like if you can respond to me ASAP. I drive a e46 318i i have a problem with the valvetronic it doesn't power on when i start the engine i have run a diagnostic and it shows that the computer box is not picking up the VVT but it does have power i used a tester on the cables do you have any suggestions ?

    @@BimmerZen hello am repairing one but when I start it it shows me that the intake tree is delayed, so I feel that the tree was not put in the correct orientation. Could you support me by telling me the orientation of the cams of piston 1 in intake in neutral

    When the engine is in TDC on first piston, the locking planes at the back of the camshafts must be 90 deg in relation to the cylinder head plane. Also, the rounded part of the locking planes must point upward. Also make sure that VANOS units are locked before checking.
