My bmw E90 n46 has valvetronic problem or error code according to OBD2 scanner. I cleared the code but it came back again. Ironically, the engine run fine with no rough idling and no cylinder misfiring. I believe it was because the DME or computer of the car has 'adaptation" capabilility to make engine runs normal. Bmw claims...the valvetronic purpose is to save gasoline of the car. But I don't see much difference of gasoline being used.

I have this exact car. Including the exact same color combination with the red leather interior. I just bought it a couple of weeks ago with only 42,000 miles on it and new tires, in great condition except that the roof motor doesn't work (common problem) and occassionally the power steering goes out. This can be very expensive to fix. The dealer quoted me $10,000. Even just the part alone is $5,000! BUT!!! This is probably the most FUN car to drive that I've ever owned. And I fell in love with the looks. And I've had a decent number of nice cars in my lifetime. 30 so far. And that includes multiple Jaguars, multiple Mercedes (S Class), Multiple BMWs (including a 750Li), multiple Lexus, Cadillac, Corvettes, etc. My main car now is a Genesis G90 Ultimate, and it's an incredibly nice car. Probably the best all round car I've ever had even better than my Mercedes S550. But none of them were quite as much fun as this little Z4. The Corvette came pretty close, but it was an automatic. The Jaguar XK8 convertible came close, but its a bigger, heavier car. More luxurious, and also an automatic. But this little Z4 with the online 6 and the 5 speed stick with the top down. Just gives me pure JOY to drive. It's literally FUN! I di t even feel like listening to the stereo - the engine sounds so good. And the 5 speed keeps you so engaged with the car that you couldn't possibly fall asleep at the wheel. You feel alive and connected to the car every passing moment. It's not a highway cruiser. For longer trips, I take the Genesis . But for short trips to the store, dinner, etc. It is just a blast to drive.

I brought to the service couple of times and even they did not notice that the timing chain was stretched so badly it damaged the plastic timing chain tensioner and broke it to small pieces that clogged the inlet to the oil pump. Which led to similar damage. Sometime my engine made loud rattling sound at start for about 1 minute and it became quiet, so I never suspected that this could be a problem. Sometimes on highway after driving like 30 minutes and slowing down thus having lower RPM there was a low oil pressure warning, but since I have used the car in the city mainly, I didn't get this warning. I was wondering if its possible to remove the engine without removing the gearbox?
Yes, but then you have to remove the front end or drop the engine + transmission with the whole front axle from underneath.
