Unfortunately both Uri Gellar and Peter “The Ripoff” Popoff kept many devout followers. To them, keeping the faith no matter how ridiculous it was was more important to their lives than giving it up. I do not necessarily criticize them because it is even worse today then it was back then and many of us today are guilty of the same thing.

What I love about these old shows is how straight they are. No crazy edits and cuts, over the top presenters, like they're trying to appeal to a 4 year old with the attention span of a goldfish. They're not even trying to embarass the guests, just allow them to display their "powers" and apply controls to test them. The only thing I find confusing is that these people know they're frauds, but went on here anyway. Maybe they thought it was good enough to get past any controlled test. Either way, Randi remains undefeated.

In a lot of ways I think it's terrible and wrong but I feel like there is a silver lining to it, it really depends on the tactfulness of the preacher. I don't think there's anything necessarily wrong with telling an old, dying woman "your son is going to be okay thanks to all your prayers". Even though that message obviously didn't come from God, it's still a thoughtful message. It may be a message delivered under false pretenses, but sometimes lying is better than telling someone the truth. If it makes someone happy and nobody is actually getting hurt from it, I think it's honestly thoughtful. It's like telling someone what they want to hear, versus what they need to hear. If it makes them happy, that's all that matters in my opinion. What is wrong is when these people act like they are healing terminal illnesses. It's one thing to be realistic and tell someone it'll be okay, you've got a long life left to live, etc. It's another thing entirely to prey on people's beliefs and make them think they are genuinely healed of all their ailments. Especially in exchange for money. These types of people are just a small part of what gives religion a bad name.

spartan456 you’re defending the wrong guy if you’re sticking up for Peter Popoff. Believe it or not, he’s still going and still on tv (though nowhere near as large as he used to be) and still conning anyone and everyone out of their money! Personally, I think Popoff is one of the most disgusting con men out there. He’s one of those preachers who try to convince the gullible into buying into his ‘supernatural power’ (or ‘miracle spring water’) and that the more they donate to him the more ’unexpected’ or divine rewards they will receive. They will try to convince you that if you donate to them even with the last of your money rather than paying bills like you should that a large chunk of money will ‘supernaturally’ appear in your bank account or your bills will suddenly and ‘supernaturally’ be paid. When that doesn’t happen they just tell you that you didn’t have enough faith! It was already terrible when Popoff and his people were fake healing but now they’re trying to take peoples last dollars with the promise of winning the lottery! I’m not religious but this almost makes me wish I was so I could imagine Peter Popoff and his staff burning in hell for all eternity!!!
