With the PS5 receiving a new update (currently in Beta at time of writing) one of the biggest and most requested features that has now finally been enabled is the M.2 NVMe SSD upgrade slot. It's been more than half a year since the launch of the PS5 and one of the biggest complaints from users (aside from stock levels being painfully low) is that the storage available in the default model is rather small. This new update and the ability to add additional storage has been met with mixed responses, as it has now become clear to many SSD buyers that the type of storage required for PS5 is much more advanced in architecture than the SATA hard drives and SSDs of previous generations. This, combined with an increased understanding on subjects like PCIe connectivity, Heatsinks and wrapping their heads why this new SSD tech is more expensive has certainly led to a fair share of raised voices! I have already discussed why I think PS5 using PCIe Gen 4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSDs is a very good thing previously, but today I want to help you choose the right SSD for your PS5.

In addition, I would love to learn, whether the ELUTENG heatsink can also be used for two-sided SSDs such as the firecuda 530 2/4TB - and then still fits into the PS5.

For those wondering, Sabrent Heatsink does fit inside of the digital version PS5 but won't allow the PS5 shell to go back on. If you want this to work out you'll need to own the disc version. I have the Sabrent SSD and heatsink but sadly can't put my PS5 shell back on because I own the digital version, and yes I was ok with not using the SSD cover since I own a dust blower that I use to clean out my PC. Finally I do own 2 extra slimmer heatsinks I bought way before So I'm good for now unless I end up with a disc version in the future.

Hello. Thank you for your pointer. I agree with all your point and i will add that i am saddened that we are so lax with reliability. I hear constantly "not a real world use." Well, i bought a thunderbolt enclosure and put a firecuda 530 4tb to do backup of my computer. Long story short, it doesn't like me writing 1.5tb in one go. It overheat and disconnect but i guess i shouldn't mind since my use is not a "real world use". What annoy me about the whole ordeal is how little knowledge there is that those ssd actually need good cooling for sustained operation and that those "aluminium enclosure for better heat dissipation" are just not up to the task. I ordered one with a far chunkier heatsink in hope that resolve the problem.

I have purchased a WD_BLACK 2tb with an attached heatsink. Would I need an additional heatsink in my PS5? Ty

can i use the Sabrent 1TB Rocket 4 Plus with the Sabrent M.2 2280 SSD Rocket Heatsink (SB-HTSK)

To be fair with ya I think the larger Sabrent made no difference, I think the major difference is that with the Sabrent the hatch was removed so allowed heat to escape easily reducing the oven type effect that comes from having the hatch on and keeping all that heat in and it was still only 2 degrees on average lower than a compact sync, and sony say to always make sure the hatch is in place, whether that's for keeping dust out or not I'm not sure but, for just a 2 degree difference I think I'll use a compact sync and reinstall the hatch.

How did the large heat sink effect the other parts of the systems cooling as blocks a part of the intake? Thanks for the real world testing, installed the Western black 2 TB and large Sabrent hs today!

The intake for the PS5 is the fans opening. The system airflow will coming from all directions as the vents, 360 to the fans opening. I use my PS5 without plates as i not like the looks.

I'm using the heatsink plus my ps5 sits on a laptop cooling fan pad which keeps it cooler always.
