With the PS5 receiving a new update (currently in Beta at time of writing) one of the biggest and most requested features that has now finally been enabled is the M.2 NVMe SSD upgrade slot. It's been more than half a year since the launch of the PS5 and one of the biggest complaints from users (aside from stock levels being painfully low) is that the storage available in the default model is rather small. This new update and the ability to add additional storage has been met with mixed responses, as it has now become clear to many SSD buyers that the type of storage required for PS5 is much more advanced in architecture than the SATA hard drives and SSDs of previous generations. This, combined with an increased understanding on subjects like PCIe connectivity, Heatsinks and wrapping their heads why this new SSD tech is more expensive has certainly led to a fair share of raised voices! I have already discussed why I think PS5 using PCIe Gen 4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSDs is a very good thing previously, but today I want to help you choose the right SSD for your PS5.

Things I learnt from this video: Need a heatsink and a normal one will do the job fine. Thank you so much!
Exactly the test I've been wanting to see.
Thank you so much for your pioneer work! Awesome done, each vidz to ps5 and the others too! You're my hero!
Once again.....an excellent video further explaining “things to know for PS5 internal ssd’s”. Can’t wait to see the next one. 😉👍
I almost never noticed the seagulls until he does. I've been enjoying all the SSD work keep it up
To me it is one of the most important and interesting topics right now! Thx for making this video! Cheers from Sweden
Good video man, thanks for making it. Laughed at the end about the seagulls
7:33 for the results Great video btw man
Thanks for doing all the hard work for us. Definitley informative
I appreciate the effort good sir! Very informative video. And when you factor in the seagull drama it was quite exciting
Says it’s not the most exciting video in the world ….. but it’s the one we’ve all been waiting for !!! Quality work thank you !
Thank you for the insightful test. The thermal difference between the slim and cheap heatsink against the no heatsink is very huge
Really appreciate this content. This is exactly what I was looking for.
Thats the test i was really looking for thank you
Thank you for these important tests 💪🏼
Very good video. I was waiting on someone to do a video like this.
This video hit the nail on the head. So many people need this video
Thanks man,appreciate your hard work
Great test. Would have loved if you measured the impact on the overall system temperature for the three scenarios.
Great test! Thank you man!
Excellent information. Used your videos to make a decision on my SSD. I purchased the Samsung 980 and the heatsink arrives today. I'll be installing this evening. I'm sure future models of the PS5 will have a built in heatsheild for expandable storage but installation seems relatively simple at this point.
Great content! Very concise!
Thank you for the info
Thanks for the info, temp is important so kudos
This is some GNSteve/GamersNexus level video content happening right here. You are killing it with these PS5 videos.
Many thanks for this informative contribution! I wonder whether or not two-sided M.2 SSDs are getting even hotter when compared to one-sided ones. In addition, I would love to learn, whether the ELUTENG heatsink can also be used for two-sided SSDs such as the firecuda 530 2/4TB - and then still fits into the PS5.
Really appreciate for the video thanks 😊
finally a video that helps me ! i have a ps5 and a 980 pro but i been holding off on install cause no heatsink

I just bought a 1tb SSD with heatsink because of your video's, I got the Corsair MP600 LPX M.2 For my new PS5, Thanks for awesome Breakdown and deeper understanding on why their needed. salute from the UK🔥
NAS, please do a thermal test of the SN850 with heatsink. The drive has amazing performance but runs hotter than other drives according to reviews. Would be great to see thermal results of the drive running in the PS5
Great test 👍
Big time Kudos to this man. This is what I've been wanting to see too! Conclusion, get a heatsink people!

Excellent my good man
Thanks for the information definitely something to consider when buying a new ssd for the ps5. Also if I may, could you please make a video on the best Nas for 2021, I'm in the market for one that is easy to use, with mostly the option to run docker containers or has at least a decent selection of apps validated by the vendor and if possible the potential for expansion with different capacity drives Ty
I bought the sabrent because of your videos
Holy cow! +20C difference! And I figured having that giant heatsink of the Sabrent would outweigh the down side of not putting that cover back on

@@shakengandulf true true! I find if you have a heatsink that sticks out past and need to leave the cover off. The little bit of heatsink sticking out will still have cooking because the fan is still circulating in that area with the side panels on
Thank you. No bs just the numbers.
For those wondering, Sabrent Heatsink does fit inside of the digital version PS5 but won't allow the PS5 shell to go back on. If you want this to work out you'll need to own the disc version. I have the Sabrent SSD and heatsink but sadly can't put my PS5 shell back on because I own the digital version, and yes I was ok with not using the SSD cover since I own a dust blower that I use to clean out my PC. Finally I do own 2 extra slimmer heatsinks I bought way before So I'm good for now unless I end up with a disc version in the future.
The cooler the better as for all electronic devices. Nicely executed 👍🏼

Another awesome video. This is the “meat & potatoes” us American tech nerds love to gawk about.

Imagine thinking it would risk anything to leave it without a heatsink
Thank you
good review. i will say my ssd with the yateng heatsink is great. my ps5 when i feel it, doesn't feel hot just very warm. and thats on one side only. so the heat sink is doing its job because only the bottom of the system is warm.
Seems that the compact heatsink is the best. Cheaper, compatible with the metal cover, and barely has any noticeable difference than the big heatsink.
I'm glad to see that the difference between the 2 heatsinks is only about 2°C. Also after watching a few of your videos, I've noticed you've got a Uni teacher style of tone when you talk.
Great video. Anyway you could test the WD SN850 with the heatsink that comes with it and perhaps one without? TIA
Mate, you're doing the Lord's work right here. Thank you! Which heatsink do you recommend?
I wonder if there’s a temp difference depending on position of ps5. verticle/horizontal?
Thanks for your video, could you please tell me what do you think about Thermalright M.2 Heatsink Heat Aluminum M.2 because I buy it ?
have you tested the eluteng compact heatsink without the cover? (to know if it would be better to run with or without.)
Thanks for making this video, the SB-HTSK is awesome and i don't like that metal plate.
So if I'm fitting a 1TB WD SN850 am I better just leaving the little cover off or not? That would be an interesting test as well!
How about adding a 1.5mm thermal pad between the ssd heatsink and the oem ssd bay cover so it would have direct contact? Would it dissipate heat better and have better thermals?
This video is gd thanks for posting it
Gotta love those seagulls. Haha. Thanks for the temps info.
Was this with a one sided SSD? I assume so as the sabrent heatsink doesn't fit if two sided SSD, right?
A interesting test would be to check how much of a difference the ssd cover would make to heat

The Sabrent version in this test has no cover on the ssd section. It’s too big for the cover to fit on.

It would be nice to know, how other bigger heatsink WITHOUT COVER perform. Like the Archgon HS-1110. This is one with Fins and also a bit massive like the sabrent. I will use the Archgon heatsink with the 2tb Corsair MP600PRO. Thanks again for your top videos and Tests! OT: I also did a Thermalpads-upgrade (14W/mk) to the PS5. The different is really huge! Could you test a SN850 with the included heatsink vs a SN850 with the eluteng heatsink?? Heard the integrated heatsink is not very good and with a good custom heatsink the SN850 is 5 degrees cooler.
Please do a review and test of th e thermal grizzly nvme m.2ssd cooler. Thank you.
Does the bay cover need to be put back on? Seems there would be better heat dissipation without.
Can you also compare the Elutang heat sink with the cover off compared to the Sabrent?
I wonder what the comparison would be of the slimmer heat sink with and without the aluminum cover over it... Sounds like a new video to me!
Hello. Thank you for your pointer. I agree with all your point and i will add that i am saddened that we are so lax with reliability. I hear constantly "not a real world use." Well, i bought a thunderbolt enclosure and put a firecuda 530 4tb to do backup of my computer. Long story short, it doesn't like me writing 1.5tb in one go. It overheat and disconnect but i guess i shouldn't mind since my use is not a "real world use". What annoy me about the whole ordeal is how little knowledge there is that those ssd actually need good cooling for sustained operation and that those "aluminium enclosure for better heat dissipation" are just not up to the task. I ordered one with a far chunkier heatsink in hope that resolve the problem.
Please do a review on the WD SN850 with heatsink testing the temperature with the ssd bay cover on.
how about eluteng heatsink vs aorus 7000s vs wd sn850 heatsink ,which better cooler, this is my most concern, i dont care about speed which almost all ssd performance are the same good.
You are the true source for PS5 SSD 🔥
Hey mate, Would the ssd be fine if it doesn't have a heatsink for a week or 2 until it comes in the mail?
Thank you for your efforts i would love to see no heatsink and not cover like the big heatsink that would be interesting
There will probably be custom 3d printed covers for larger size heatsinks.
Can you do that same temperature test again but with the same games you have been testing boot times. 30 minutes or an 1 hour.
I have a large heatsink which only fits without the cover plate. But it's so hard to decide if I should get a smaller heatsink or not. The heatsink would sit pressed up against the plastic plate so I wonder if it would start to deform with the heat.
Do you support using these heat sinks you selected in the description
Isn't more problematic the temp of controller than nand? P.S.: How does impact on overall system temp if no metal shield is installed due to too tall heatsink?
You should do one over an extended period with the middle one you tested
So is it best to buy a ssd with heat sink for ps5 then without . Correct ??
Please also test suds that fit with the memory cover on and off.
I was hoping you would show the temperature of the drives while playing games which is the actual use case. Transfers are temporary high loads which in the grand scheme of things won’t really affect the drives much.
i heard that Sony recommend you keep cover on for an airflow function inside ?
What about the 980 pro read cap I saw on other videos without a software upgrade?
I wonder how a discount drive like the Inland Performance Plus 2TB SSD (3D TLC NAND PCIe NVMe Gen 4 x 4 M.2 2280) would fare in your comparisons?🤔
There are some larger heatsinks with fans built onto them. These fans are powered by a cable attached to a pc motherboard - you could get a compatible cable to USB and have it powered by the consoles front USB 2. This I want to try and will get aftermarket faceplate to cut a hole into instead of the original ones ;p
Run the slim heatsink with no cover on so you can fairly compare it vs the Sabrant
Up until a week ago when the update was released I'd never even heard of a heatsink.lol
Will that thick heat sink work with the sabrent plus ?
This video confirms it. That he hates Seagulls and you need a heatsink :)
I have purchased a WD_BLACK 2tb with an attached heatsink. Would I need an additional heatsink in my PS5? Ty
legend
can i use the Sabrent 1TB Rocket 4 Plus with the Sabrent M.2 2280 SSD Rocket Heatsink (SB-HTSK)
To be fair with ya I think the larger Sabrent made no difference, I think the major difference is that with the Sabrent the hatch was removed so allowed heat to escape easily reducing the oven type effect that comes from having the hatch on and keeping all that heat in and it was still only 2 degrees on average lower than a compact sync, and sony say to always make sure the hatch is in place, whether that's for keeping dust out or not I'm not sure but, for just a 2 degree difference I think I'll use a compact sync and reinstall the hatch.
