PS5 M.2 Heatsink and SSD Cover Myth. Busted or NOT?

Sony recommends using a heatsink on the optional M.2 SSD drive. Is this true? Also, should you put in place the SSD cover, which restricts the height of the heatsink that you will use?
Watch the video to learn the whole truth on this matter, through an extensive set of tests. Besides temperatures, we also provide speed measurements and we have a speed comparison between a WD Black SN850 and a Samsung 980 Pro, both with 1 TB capacity.

How does running the cover off the SSD bay affect the rest of the system? I hear so much about how negative pressure effects how the internal components are cooled. If the DRAM is hotter because of the cover being off I think I would rather have a couple degree warmer on the SSD than have the DRAM even warmer than it already is.

Its pretty strange honestly. Sony recommends an Heatsink but also that you should use the Cover (so the Airflow will remain i assume). But since you tested it and it seems overall without the Cover its like… 4 Degrees better… I wonder why. Could it be that the Airflow was disturbed because of the Wires and it did hurt the Airflow because of that? Meaning that without the Cover there is overall more or better Airflow? Things is that Sony also Recommends Heatsinks that dont exceeds a given Hight (so you can still put the Cover back on. But the Thing is… if the Cover hurts the Temperature anyways… you might go with an larger HS as well (as long as you dont go overboard and so the white Panel dosent fit anymore at all. Maybe they recommend the Hight and Cover because otherwise it melts the white Panel…? Just some Thoughts. Its just strange to me that the Temps are actually better without the Cover when it shouldnt be. Edit. Then again on PCs Temps get better without the Sidepanel as well but it hurts other Things. So maybe it does make more Sense than i thought at first.

As you stated at the end and I have seen others talk about, I think the cover is more or less to keep the airflow for the entirety of the system consistent, and not for the NVMe. Yes you may get those few degrees better, but that can also take away airflow from your system increasing its temp instead.

I think there might be a problem with removing the cover on the SSD bay: The higher pressure air will escape through the hole! It will cool the SSD, but also slightly reduce the flow through the main heatsink, and the SSD air will be fed right back into the fan.

  • @HardwareBusters

    @HardwareBusters

Given the very low speed of the fan, there won't be any issues. Normally, if PS5 detects higher temps it will increase fan speed. Also from the moment, you have an M.2 installed, airflow is decreased in this compartment, anyway.

Sony recommends the cover for airflow in the total system not just the drive - this test isn't looking at the bigger picture and it would be a mistake to remove the cover. Did you notice how specific in the internal layout is? It's all designed to channel air for optimal cooling and performance. Also why Sabrent's heatsink is so interesting, it'll provide additional passive cooling to the m.2 while actually increasing system airflow by fully integrating and improving on the original's design.

@@MrMoviePhoneEx Well what I did was remove plate, and put tape around open areas so M.2 is only exposed, So air will flow through heatsink of m.2 and in to the fan. @@XxGAMERxXPS3 interesting hack with tape! As for the air flow design, I imagine we won’t be seeing any good data for at least another year or so, as I wouldn’t expect the extra heat to cause any issues until there’s other wear and tear in the system. My point was not that it was a big deal, but it is altering the intended design so that could cause issues down the line. Most users may not even stress their systems enough for it to ever come into play, but if you’ve ever worked at a GameStop you’d know that’s not the case for everyone ;)

@@MrMoviePhoneEx Using thermal probe attached to the heatsink of my PS5 11xx version the only game that stressed my system was Metro Exodus it reaches 63c around heatsink. So system APU is around 70-80c is my guess. Playing gran turismo Sport the temp of heatsink is actually 40c so the APU is probably around 50-60c. (I am not sure if this is accurate as the difference is so big) This is just rough estimate and probably not that accurate. I placed probe as close as possible to the APU. PS5 does run hot and I am sure Sony will release update to ramp the fan up later on, As more data is collected.

@Soap A that would be a very big mistake. Do NOT remove the metal cover even if you have a heatsink on your ssd. You will create a negative vacuum that is counterintuitive to the functionality of how the PS5 and how it distributes the airflow to the rest of the GPU and CPU components! I would hate to hear you burned out your PS5 and your expensive ssd my friend. Don't take my word for it, listen to Mark Cerny, the man who created and engineered the PS5. If he says leave the metal cover on with the heatsink attached to the ssd for maximum cooling then that's just what you need to do. Just saying....✌❗

U realize that there were other tests that were not done?! U can't pull away from a video that was not complete nor throughly tested. Plz, for the love of your PS5 and expensive ssd, do NOT act on this biased analysis. But don't take my word for it. Search Mark Cerny videos or interviews where he goes in depth about the PS5 he created and engineered. NO ONE knows better than he!

Your 980pro results are a little weird. In my case I get 6535mb/s on the read test. Surprisingly yours is quite a bit below that.

Was waiting for someone to do this! There is minimal airflow in that little compartment so leaving the cover on seems like a bad idea.

So why do you think the metal cover and the airflow vents on the ssd slot were made then if you think these important properties are useless??

Absolutely take the cover off. How else will the heat escape?. Remember Sony Don’t care about third party products. Its does no harm in taking the cover off they say dust may be an issue, so just hoover it every month like me

Personally I would recommend to use the saberent PS5 heatsink since it will utilize the negative presser of the ssd bay but also make the cover act as a heatsink for the ssd This is probably the best solution that is currently available

@@OlderRockRocks at the time I posted this Saberent was the only one who made these “cover-style” Heatsinks for the PS5 At the moment the one from PNY is interesting since it has also got internal fins and isn’t just a aluminium block The Elecgear is also interesting but might hinder the negative presser of the ps5’s SSD bay (since the fins are over the openings on the bay) But whatever the one is that anybody prefers this type of heatsink is going to be the best solution for cooling the SSD that one would place in there ps5 We might get back into the argument of cutting the thermal pad to size so it would only connect to the controller (since the nand preforms better when it’s hotter)
