This video shows my investigations into PS4 slim consoles with no disc feed, where the BD-ROM drive fuses all test good. We have previously seen cases where F6202 blows open (link below to that video) but for a while now we've also been seeing consoles where the fuses are good, and so seemingly is everything else but the drive itself is dead. Many believe this to be a dead Renesas IC, but there are others out there who dispute this. The above video is my take on this issue, and my findings on inspecting a console exhibiting this behavior, and why I have come to the conclusion I have with regards to the failure.
In short, We need "right to repair" to pass in the US and EU pretty damn quickly because there are a LOT of consoles dying from this particular issue, and many are going to end up in landfill for no good reason other than independent repair not having access to the correct tools and parts to fix the (what should on the face of things be fairly simple) issues at hand.

    Thanks, I just had to replace a fuse on PS4 slim luckily it was just one of the fuses but it got me thinking if all fuses are good and it's a known good drive what the next actions to take would be this is very helpful it was 6202 that had blown a friend on Facebook had told me its usually 6202 and he was right it certainly was I am used to working on PS4 phat but I am starting to become more familiar with the other PS4 boards. Love your videos, so much good info! I have a slim (SAD-002 board) that is stuck in the update loop with error SU-30677-3. The disc drive load sensor works (will turn on the console if I stick a disc in), but otherwise the drive appears to be dead (won't feed). I was hoping it would be one of the fuses, but I checked F6201, F6202, F6001, and F5103 and they are all fine. I understand it could be the BD7764MUV chip, something in the drive itself (motor, switch, etc), or the (!) renesas. I'm just a hobbyist and don't have another working console to check the drive in, but I'm going to see if I can get one somewhere. Any idea if it's possible to narrow down the fault a little further, short of just replacing things and seeing if it works? I'm hesitant to invest too much in it if it might just be the renesas, which would be a dead end. Thanks in advance!

    I have come across a very similar issue a little bit ago. All fuses checked good and voltages appeared to correct as well. Turned out to be some kind of issue with the 7.50(I think) update and the hdd. I had to replace the hdd and download everything and it worked for me and still running strong.

    Nice video, i have 2 ps4 pros, replaced F6202 fuses nut BD Rom drives take a disc 1 time but never seats it, eject works all the time. Replaced both sensors and motor, cant see any other issues, i guess both drives need fully replacing, all other mobo fuses have continuity unless the Motor IC is the issue but not sure how to test that....

    Had one of the PS4 1000 series blu ray drive plays dead on me as it showing laser activity but no beeps or inserting/exiting disk but it does point toward the ribbon cable from the drive to main board if I twist or move the drive it does wake up to beeping. Inspect the cable if it missing the locking taps or missing gold pins it best to replace the cable as it only takes a few times before the cable goes busted

    This may or may not be appliable here but I used to work at a TV shop in the early 2000's and in some cases when a chip was not available the techs would look up IC block diagram and rebulid the part of IC that was defective by building a small circuit to the affected pads with transistors.

    Hi Andrew, i am from Hungary, and first of all i would like to thank you for your videos, and that you share your work with us. I have 2 SAD-001 boards with "no disc feed" issue, and i came to the same conclusion, i have checked all the fuses, and tried changing the BD7764MUV, i've ordered them from China,tried 3 of 5 but with no luck, i have no known good board by me, so i can't test them if they work or not. But assuming they are good, is nothing more left then the Renesas IC. If i can help you and you need to compare voltages, feel free to contact me, but you have prooved with these video that the Renesas IC must be the culprit. Excuse me my English it's not my native Language

Have an iron, but the tip isn't particularly for microsoldering. Have a donor board of same BDP etc. Best chance of being able to do this? Flux, hot air (450c?), remove Renesas from both boards (mark original), clean boards, tin donor pads with leaded solder, clean with iso, hot air again to solder to board? Any tips? Have solder braid etc. too. Just having a first go at this and don't care how long it takes as long as it has the best chance of working.

    Hi Michael, Lead-free solder will melt at around 218C so you'll need to ensure that you have thermal probes set up around the base of the chip to ensure you have a stable, even temperature prior to lift. I usually set my reflow profile to 225C max which should be enough to comfortably shift the APUs.

    @1:12 - I was about to say pin 6 was looking a bit out of place, but later on you say you did it while troubleshooting. Good job. I am wondering if you have tried to measure resistance from the pin to ground? (Red multimeter probe to ground, Black probe to pin 6 - and reverse to see if there's a difference - no diode check - and then do the same to the Renesas ic's supply) There is a phenomenon called Latch-Up - which is a real annoyance to track down: www.ti.com/lit/wp/scaa124/scaa124.pdf "What is Latch-Up? Latch-Up is a condition where a low impedance path is created between a supply pin and ground. This condition is caused by a trigger (current injection or overvoltage), but once activated, the low impedance path remains even after the trigger is no longer present. This low impedance path may cause system upset or catastrophic damage due to excessive current levels. The Latch-Up condition typically requires a power cycle to eliminate the low impedance path." "Temperature effects (external and internal to the product) can also influencet he Latch-Up immunity of products. As temperature increases, the substrate and well resistances rise allowing the bias to reach a critical value sooner." - this means it *might* be possible to save the chip by heating it up/removing it from the PCB - cooling it down somewhat quickly to shock the gates back into 'normal operating mode' - and mounting it back again. No guarantees, but it appears dead as you say - and if the resistance is near 0 ohms to ground or supply - you might be in luck, and have something to go by. Power glitching has been used to do many things, mostly dumping smart-cards - but it might also be possible to do a p'n'litch - and get it working again, a bit like the washer trick - nobody can say how long, if at all, it works. I don't mind watching stuff that doesn't get fixed in the end - it is the effort that counts, and the community interaction that makes it worth while. Thanks! it was/is a great video.

    We need to dump the data on the renesas and reprogram a new chip or if we could re marry an other drive chip. im sure in the future when some kind of jailbreak comes out for the kernel we should be able to remarry a new chip in there just like the ps3. Also what i do to confirm renesas is i swap the chip with another one from the same type of the motherboard. and if the drive comes back to life i know its the renesas . unfortunately this method is only to test and the new chip wont work since its married to some other console.

    Hi Andrew I had the same problem on a board a few months ago. It wouldn't update due the dead disc drive, (su42118-6) so did the usual check fuses, swap disc drive ect. Still nothing, so tried a few other things like yourself and got nowhere fast. So out of interest, I know it wouldn't be able to read discs but I swapped the renesas chip to see if it gave me disc power and low and behold it worked! So I managed to do an update, thought great ok at least it can be used as a digital console.....not so fast, 3 months later Sony brings out another update 7.51 which checks the renesas chip and throws me ce35888-2.😩 Oh well doesn't look like we can do anything about these. I noticed some times not always excessive heat on two components two mosfets. I tried to replace them by taking them from a ps4 that does not have the defect and replacing them the console turns on and off immediately. While with the two original mosfets even if one is partially defective the console turns on without problems. What do you think about it? If it were actually a Renesas problem we cannot replace it at the moment except by doing a remarry that at the moment we can only do through jailbreak I think. What do you think about it? Maybe I send a photo by email so you can better understand which components I speak. Thank you. ibb.co/bXGczWs Andrew I thought another thing. Could it be a crystal malfunction near them?

  • @AndrewPaul

    @AndrewPaul

    XBOX is the same, drives are per-box and married to the console main board. I can only presume it's due to all the XBOX 360 drive firmware hacks which were doing the rounds years ago so to prevent people messing with the drives and keys, they're all now per-box and encrypted.

  • @danguy2009

    @danguy2009

    @@AndrewPaul I think it goes back a bit further than that and the idea for keyed drives comes from original xbox hacks. the 360s also had per console dvd keys but they were easily bypassed because you could read and modify the fw with a pc. Im sure there was a hack with the original xbox where you could connect a common PC IDE drive to play backups so on the 360 they added an additional layer of security.

    I just had an SU-42118-6 error after just triying to update with the 9.0, began to test all fuses, all were ok, then began to think about this chip, and, well, i don't know if it can be replaceable now. After triying the 9.0 update my drive stoped taking (or ejecting) disc's but if i put a disc in the tray it powered the ps4, from there i just had that error code. I think the problem are the updates, we began hearing about this problems since the 8.50 and a lot of them ended up in the Renesas, maybe because they were testing the waters to erase the CBOMB (8.50) and they ended up touching a little more in the Renesas that maybe just blowed up.

    Essentially it's a case of sticking the DMM into continuity mode, one pin on the test pad I'd scratched in and the other you touch around the other components until you find a point which offers continuity. At that stage you know you have found the next point along the trace. Keep following it back as long as needed to trace out that entire line.

    Hi I have a ps4 pro slim model and when the console is cold it will play games just fine for as long as i want to. as soon as i eject the disc and re insert the same disc the laser will refuse to read the disc. I have tried blurays dvds cd's and nothing will read when it is warm. I originally thought it was the laser needing replacement but it doesn't make sense that the console will play for hours problem free if the disc is never removed. is there a sort of one time check that the blueray logic does to initialise a disc, im dubious to buy a new laser mechanism when I think it is the logic board at fault. anything you have ever come across? thanks.

    That could be loose cable from the drive to main board as once it start shaking or moving causing the connection to disconnect

    Hi! I have the same problem! I changed the Renesas chip. The behavior has not changed. I don't think it's about this chip.

    The PlayStation 4 slim are garbage ... especially after Sony did the update.. Bricking peoples devices if there disk drive didn’t work they can’t update ..Which therefore they can’t use the game council Online..I’ve seen this issue a lot with the fuses been blowing..too Also a lot of them with dead APU’s Because they decided to slim the board down with it being thinner and smaller I believe it doesn’t dissipate the heat as much red hot APU’s would Not recommend people to buy the Slims

    Well you're on the right video. There's not much else to tell you sadly if all the fuses check out. There are three or four total, be sure to check the others too.
