PlayStation 4 BD-ROM No Disc Feed - Full Fault Diagnosis and Board Repair (SAA/SAB-001) - SU-42118-6

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This video shows the repair of a PS4 which will not load or accept discs - it was sent in for a fuse issue however as we find the issues are not caused by a bad fuse. We check the drive mechanism, logic board fuses and finally the PS4 motherboard where we diagnose a fault with some small, inconspicuous 6-pin ICs. We replace the suspect components - will this be enough to resurrect this PlayStation 4?
Turns out these small 6-pin ICs are ALT branded 14322260TR FETs (608ZT). Still can't find a bloody datasheet for them though!

    Just wanted to say thank you for this video, I purchased a ps4 off eBay and with the help of this video and another youtuber that also does ps4 repairs I was able to get it working. Not only did I have to replace the HDMI port, but also the blu-ray connector on the motherboard, also a missing component from under the motherboard and a blown filter on the hdmi line.

    Love your videos, had issues with the my PS4 disk drive and managed to fix it. My fix was not as complicated as yours but your video's gave me the courage to attempt mine. I'm surprised that your subscriber base is not higher! I have watched lots of your video's even though I dont have other faults on my console but who knows maybe one day. All the best and thanks for sharing your knowledge. Top man !!

    Understand that all disk drives (I say 'all' because this is what I have found so far...) have one thing in common: a read head that travels to and fro on 2 rods. Over time those rods will pick up very fine dust in most cases but in some cases much more trash like animal hair etc due to the unit being used in a less than clean atmosphere. Smoke from tobacco, cooking vapors etc are slow death to disk drives so keep that in mind. The motor that drives that head is tiny and as trash builds up on the guide rods, the motor has to work harder and after a certain time can no longer move the read head resulting in errors like 'failed program installation', 'bad disk' etc. The solution is very simple and has worked every time I have run into failed disk/disk drive situations. Clean the rods with appropriate swabs using a little alcohol then follow up with a light, synthetic oil followed by wiping the rods again. I just used this procedure on my PS4 Pro (original) that would not read the disk and it now works like a charm and probably will for several years to come. The console, BTW, has been in medium to heavy use for about 13 years and after cleaning the drive as described here, replacing the fan and giving it a good cleaning is back in normal operation. PS A good source of parts is gamersrepair dot com.

    Those z809 ICs appear to be maybe an optocoupler or latch/gate. Seen a lot of them repairing bowling alley circuit boards. If so they are used for a type of switch for voltage controlling to specific functions.

    No problem - I handed one back myself a good few months ago which is annoying ha ha! I have some videos which might be of some use as below: The basics of creating BGA Rework Profiles: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lH-CtbeGhKu6kdY.html Equipment Requirements for BGA Rework: kzread.info/dash/bejne/rGWWxsZxXafFlrQ.html BGA Reballing - how to correctly apply flux and solder balls for a successful reball kzread.info/dash/bejne/lGeuk5SocafFk6Q.html The key is use as minimal amount of flux as is possible - seriously a pea sized amount is enough when applied properly - that video above should show you the way. It's a shame we lost the original after someone hacked my account as it's not as clear these days but next time I do one I may well re-make it.

    Good work,I have seen a couple of your videos,the people doesnt apreiciate this kind of troubelshootign as it should be. I saw you test the semiconductros on OHMS range,make your life simpler in the future and test all the semiconductros on the DIODE range as it should be tested(measuring the drop acros the device bjt,mosfet,diode) The circuitry you were fixing,I would say that its a a two seperate Ldo regulators for the bd drive 5v and 3v3 maybe,measure it for future reference,I first thought that its a synchronus buck converter but I don see any inductor so its an ldo regulator or more so a pwm regulator beacause of the switching transistor in the gate of the mosfets.Oscilloscope would ease your work if you have it and give it a try its not hard to learn how to use it. You definitly know how to troubleshoot a ps4,keep up the good work.I wish you all the best.Cheers

    Thank you for the detailed video! I have a Destiny Edition ps4 that had a damaged HDMI port. I replaced the port but the drive would not load or eject. Tried it with a different logic board from a dead system and it loaded fine. The third fuse you tested on the BD logic board turned out to be bad. swapped it with the fuse from the donor board and my console is now working 100%! And I only spent $20 on the broken consoles and about $5 for the port. Had I not found your video i would gave given up on it!

    hi i have a ps4 with a faulty drive all 3 sensors do as they should, but there is no power the the eject motor. so it wont accept a disk although it does beep and power the station. If you manually push the disc the laser begins to seek. Check the motor is fine as is the small flex and plugs on both sides so guessing its the power to the motor. Problem is i have no idea where it runs on the logic board

    Which board? What symptoms is your console / drive displaying?

  • @mshockey22

    @mshockey22

    6 жыл бұрын

    The board is a BDP-025. The drive won't take or eject a disc. The drive will read a disc if you insert it manually. The console will also turn on if you try to insert a disc but won't ever take it. I've found your video for swapping the Renesas IC to a new board, and that may be the best option here, but I figured it was worth looking into repairing the original board if possible. Another weird issue that I noticed with this one is that it doesn't give me the "static electricity" beep after the console has been unplugged and the power button is pressed. Not sure if that is related to the issue, but I've noticed that most other PS4's will beep and flash a blue light after being unplugged. That's been said to fix the "disc not ejecting" issue for other people even though I'm sure it's only a temporary fix.

    You are awesome!! Such a weird issue to have. Is it pretty much the same issue with the BDP-010? I've had someone call me about that one and was looking to have the board swapped but if it's a simple fix like that then that would be even better!

    Yes mate - same on all BDP-010 / 015 / 020 / 025. The only differences really is that some don't have an F501 but they all have F201 / 202 and 203. Drive feed is usually down to a blown F203.

    The most common optical drive problem I deal with is greasy rollers that result in the disc not inserting or ejecting properly. I suspect the prime cause of this may be kids handling discs shortly after eating something like a bag of crisps or adults doing the same thing, maybe after a kebab :) All the grease or oils from your hands gradually builds up on the discs which, when inserted into the drive, ultimately gets transferred to the rollers. The only solution then is to strip down the drive and wipe the rollers with some IPA. Moral of the story? - KEEP YOUR DISCS CLEAN & SCRATCH-FREE PEOPLE :)

    Also regularly find that younger kids tend to treat the PS4 disc drive like a piggy bank. Can't tell you how many times I find coins in drives when opened up.

    Andrew, so full detailed video, thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. I´ve had this issue, The unit loaded the disk, but the message was it didn´t recognize the disk, so push the eject buttom and disk out. I dissasembly the unit to clean the lens, and after reassembling, both the power and the disk buttom doesn´t work, the unit can be turned on an off using the remote control. If I put the disk in the slot, there is no sound at all. I´ve seen the conectors and everything looks good. Can you help me?

    Andrew and all the folks, I checked the ribbon cable with the black tab, and the latch in the connector must be in position, of course, if you do it well when disconnecting there is no problem, but in my case I broke the two ears of the cable and the latch didn´t returned to the conn position. So with a plier I lifted the latch and voila, it worked, and the cleaning of the lens worked ok.

    There is a small IC just down from the pad (an STM chip IIRC). This is a touch micro controller - seen them die occasionally. Will just need replacing most likely. Take one from a spares donor, or failing that you can perform a Renesas swap across to a new board, whichever you prefer.

    Hi Andy, I have interesting issue here. PS4 CUH-1116A does not eject/feed discs. I've started from replacing fuse on BDP-025 board ('3rd fuse' - below big BD7763 IC ). I didn't have exact fuse so I took a little bigger one from ps4 logic board (my bad). BD-drive still didn't work after that. Later on I've checked this BD-drive on other PS4 console and it didn't work. Further I've replaced four ICs on PS4 logic board (SAB-001 motherboard) below connector. Resistors were OK. Still no effect. So I've took BDP-025 board from other working CUH-1116 console and installed it on BD drive I'm having problem with. Effect - It blown the 3rd fuse (below BD7763 IC) and probably damaged that IC as well. Oh fun, fun fun. I came back to original BDP-025 board and replaced BD7763 IC) and fitted it into original BD drive. At the beginning of the test I saw a little bit of smoke coming from just replaced IC. This repair is being costy. Faulty BD-drive motor? Something is burning fuses and ICs on that BD drive.

  • @AndrewPaul

    @AndrewPaul

    Hi, Yes could be a bad motor - replace the driver IC and then the motor - see what that does. It may have taken out the fuses again so check these and the driver FETs again on the mobo just in case. Also check for any shorts on the BD-ROM cables and connectors themselves particularly on flat-flex as people tend to bugger them up by forcefully removing the cable.

  • @piotrnowak1302

    Thank you for reply. I've checked ribbons from both motors (disc eject motor and 'disc spinning' motor). No shorts. No shorts on connector of 'disc eject motor'. New BD drive ordered along with two boards (donor boards), as at the moment I need to repair two BDP-025 boards. Just want to confirm that I have power coming to the drive, but feeding mechanism doesn't work. Rollers and gears checked. Will update you shortly.

  • @piotrnowak1302

    @piotrnowak1302

    Small update. After replacing BD7763 IC on both boards + replacing faulty BD-ROM (which used to fry logic boards) the disk feed/eject mechanism started to work. However on both consoles (with repaired logic boards) I'm getting "unrecognized disc" message and I can hear that disc drive is struggling to read the disc. No errors, just that message. When I plug 100% working BD ROM from the other PS4, the blu-ray disc can be read without any problem, but of course I'm getting error because of "not-married-IC". My thoughts: that faulty blu-ray fried not only BD7763 and fuse, but also some surface mount components. Hopefully Renesas IC is OK. OR maybe its just faulty laser in both consoles (fried by logic boards... previously fried by bad blu-ray drive). I will update you shortly.

  • @AndrewPaul

    @AndrewPaul

    7 жыл бұрын

    Was just going to suggest fried lasers - if changing laser gives no result then swap Renesas onto an otherwise good donor. Failing that then it may have done some damage to the logic side of the Renesas IC. Let's hope not!

    I have a slim that has this problem. But, it won't update and gives an error code. I don't think it would be this problem if I'm getting a failed update. Am I right? I was going to replace the disc ribbon (Big one) until I saw this. It turns on from rest mode when trying to feed disc. So it has power
