Sony PS4 Disc Drive DEAD & EJECT Button NOT WORKING - Trying to FIX
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Hi, in this video I attempt to repair a PlayStation 4 sent over by Mike from 1upGamingLimited on eBay. The original fault was that the discs wouldn't eject. After a solder reflow on the main board unfortunately now the discs won't play OR eject. Will it be fixable?

Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

Great job. I really admire your troubleshooting methodology. Many, MANY times, as you have shown here and in your other videos, 95% of the repair is usually troubleshooting and identifying the issue and 5%, or less is spent actually fixing the issue. Thanks for taking us along for the ride!
Congratulations on yet another successful repair, I always enjoy watching these, especially the ones where the repair was a failure or a partial success but later in a followup video you manage to get it fully working at last.
Really amazing fix Vince. Your patience and fault finding is really really good. 🙂
Great work, Vince! I enjoyed this repair alot! It is always very nice to see, that you don't give up!
Great video, Vince! 👍 That slow-mo resistor jiggle was a delight to watch! 😊

I love the long video format and following your adventures. Been subscribed from the start. Sometimes the folks that fast forward everything don't teach very much. Better to see all the gruesome details and learn.
Vince your amazing at fixing stuff also thank you for your long stream this should help me a lot.

Another great video Vince. Who would have thought that some needlework would do the trick! :)
Amazing fix, Vince! A real head-scratcher!
Thank you so much! A client came to me with the problem of a dead disk drive, so coming across this video helped me save his ps4!
Good video Vince. Thanks for your time it takes for you to do.
Great to see long videos again!
Thank you for this video Vince! With this I was able to find the fault in a PS4 I was trying to fix for a friend. The eject button wasn't working after my friend went dust cleaning inside his PS4. I disassembled the PS4 further to also replace the thermal paste but after that neither the eject nor the power button where reacting anymore. Turns out that this issue was also related to that flat flex ribbon cable that connects the drive daughter board to the mainboard and I just didn't fully insert it. There are some line markers on the cable to show you how far you need to push it in. After that I went on to bend back the metal contact on the lower case shell and now both buttons work again. Great! I have to say I am not a big fan of how Sony technically implemented those keys. Some normal push buttons would have worked too (like it's done on the XBOX 360, for example) without the hassle of a metal plate being required to be exaclty bent at the right hight and angle, but yeah whatever. Thank you again!
Great and proper fix !!! Many thanks for nice and calming content !
Great video as always Vince!
What a nice fix man! Keep it up!
Thank you for your help. I replaced the mylar cable that you indicated that you had a problem on pin 1. When I removed the cable the two ears broke off the cable. This somehow made it so I could not eject my cd with the button. After replacing the cable my button now works. Thank you so much.
I'm guessing maybe when you feed it the 3V it may have flicked over a stuck latch/bit in that chip from being low powered. I've actually seen this before on a Sony television where the buttons on it wouldn't work. After fault checking I put external power through the daughterboard and worked instantly. After years of use, it still works and wasn't sure what fixed it until I saw this video. Great work btw, this is the first video I've seen of yours. You have earned another sub.
Brilliant work Vince my old PS4 fat has the exact same problem this one had it doesn't take discs and it's just completely dead but everything else works perfectly fine.
Great video and amazing persistence! 👏
Thank you so much Vince. I managed to fix my PS4 using your video 👍.
Thank you very much, your troubleshooting is great and has helped me a lot!

Great Video Vince
What an interesting fix to watch early hours in the morning.
have a great weekend vince mate!
Nice video and perfect fault founding. They probably damaged the connector with disassembly and assembly the device. Probably for cleaning
You can check the voltages with the chip removed to see where the supply comes from and the voltage directly from the supply.

Mate I feel your pain, I've been at this for 72 hours now, tried to swap disc drives with another from exact same ps4... bloody ribbon cables were different sizes. Every fault I seem to find and fix springs up another unespected fault, I'm gonna drop kick this thing out of the window soon I think. You've got more patience than me clearly lol
Great one, Vince!
Nice one my mate Vince
Brilliant video, very entertaining!
I missed the console repair videos!
Once again and amazing video
Thank you so much I was thinking of getting rid of my PlayStation but your video really helped me
Now this is called proper repair!
Nice job Vince. Sometimes power comes through chips and you end up with some voltage but it isn't referenced correctly with respect to the circuit design. If you ground a 12V circuit to the positive of a 3V circuit it will still work, albeit at 9V instead of 12. Sometimes it's ok. Other times... Not so much. If you have a voltage out of spec, trace it back to the source and check that. Then check along the circuit to see if any component is pulling it up or down. 1-5 volt logic circuits behave erratically when not properly supplied or referenced to ground.
I literally just had this exact issue... and while watching your vid in the background, I tried your fix and suddenly the disc drive drive started working again 😂😂
Now that was some good fault finding. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I had this problem for more than a year. I hope this fix works.
I knew when the video hit @0:23 it was either going to be the flat white blu ray cable or the metal eject button being to high was the problem 👍🏻 I've serviced well over 100 ps4's & the amount of times I've seen people just pull the flat cable out & break the "ears" without pressing the metal release catch first is unreal! Well done as ever on getting it working, you've come leaps n bounds with your channel & fixing skills 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 btw it's only the 'renesas chip' that's "married" to the motherboard. If you buy another of the same logic board & take the chip off off the original & solder it to the new working logic board that will work 👍🏻

How do you fix it if you break the ears of the flat cable?
Hey Vince, been awhile :) I know this video is a bit old, but I'm just catching up on your vids rn. I think the voltage injection worked due to the power supply not being sufficient for the chip to start (which is where the most current draw is likely to happen) leading to something called a "brown out". When you inject the correct voltage in, it draws the initial burst from the bench psu, and then the lower voltage on the connector is enough to avoid a brown out again. This also tracks with the whole "turn it off and it stops working" symptom. Nice fix :)
Thank you, Mate, your video really help. Buying PS4 fat with 8.52 FW. And it was only a decoration, because i have same problem with BD drive and sensor eject button. I cant update to ofw and play online and i cant jailbreak it because only 7.55 or 9.00 exploit exists. I disassembled the console, cleaned it, reconnected all the BD ribbons, did some operations with the eagle and the connector in the upper corner of the board, just like you and now it works and I can update FW.
I indeed was using headphones, and man did my ears hurt hearing those beeps haha! But nonetheless, it was a very interesting and informative video! Thanks for the video Vince :)

Well Done Vince 👍👏🍻
superb Vince ,well done :)
The video and explanations were amazing, very funny video. Currently, I have same problem with my PS4 (It stop working after the first time I opened the PS4 for cleaning tasks). Now its 5 AM, but I can't wait to try to fix it tomorrow morning. I hope it would be same issue with the flex's pin, because I don't have all these tools nor spare parts xD. Wish me luck ;-) Cheers from Barcelona, Catalonia.
Thanks for the video now I know to fix this stuff now.
37:11 lol yes they are. Love the videos beautifully done and explained thank you.
Thanks for saving my day one PS4 disc drive
I would check the caps (at the points which 'should have' 3.3V on them) for leakage. Though voltage injection, sparks etc can reform some electrolytics, this may also be true (I dont know for sure) for ceramics (which do leak when they are very hot anyway).
Very nice repair

Well done Vince ! 😊....I have a question, what what flux do you use and where do you get it from ? seems like it will work better than the Rosin liquid flux i use !
A bad connection pin can cause a lower voltage than intended for either increased resistance on the line limiting the current draw and lowering the voltage to compensate, or the conection is intermitent and the capacitors smooth out the supply to a lower voltage.

Another possibility regarding the pin is that even if the pin is notphysically connected to the cable, with enough power (3.2V in this context), an electric arc couble be create, bridging both poles, and sticking them together will enough heat is here. And with time it will unstick. This could explain what appends
Vince: "might be a simple fix" Checks video length 49min Me: perfect :)
Just fixed a ps4 with the same issue.swapped the hdd for a new one,it wouldnt let me install firmware through usb,it errored su-42118-6.(bluebray driver error)Turns out,it was the eject button not working, but from the mainboard side of the connector.I just inserted a thin plastic piece just to tighten the ribbon cable and make better contact, and voila, eject button works.I salute you sir!

what about an eject button on the ps4 slim? it's cracked a bit around the button. it won't eject discs. do you think it might be fixable?
Once again, such a tiny thing that stops an expensive device from working. In the end all you needed was a needle to fix it :)

There looked to be a solder blob or metal shaving bridging the capacitative sensor. Was it just a scratch?
Nice fix.
good job mate.
Mate I bought exact the same ps4 phat for 75 bucks with the same issue. And couldnt find anything wrong. Replugged the cable just like you and it started working 🤣🤣 Easy flip👍
i love taking things apart to see if i can fix things
Thanks for all your content Vince. Ive been watching your videos over the last year or so. Im a complete novice at anything like this. Watching your videos gave me the confidence (after a little research too) to fix my gaming laptop fan which would make a knocking noise as soon as the laptop powered on. I had to take the fan apart and apply a tiny amount of lubrication to the needle on the fan. Once it was housed back inside where the motor powered it, the lubrication did its job. I used sewing machine oil and it worked a treat. Ive since read its a fault on the laptops fan so will probably need doing every year or so. The cost of sending it away to be repaired would of definitely of been a lot more compared to the cost and time spent by me fixing the issue.
I learned two things from this; 1. Even one tiny slightly out of alignment pin can make a huge difference. 2. **BeepBeepBeep!...** **BeepBeepBeep! BeepBeepBeep! BeepBeepBeep!"**
Hey vince can you do a tutorial on how to increase the storage on the ps4 not the digital way like you did with the nintendo switch back in 2018 but like inside the ps4
have that model and had that issue. was that little rubber piece on the underside it was out of whack.

Hi, could you tell what câmara do you use? Thank's in advance.
Vince keep your fingers off the probes resistance in your fingers etc Plus if you’re probing a power supply you could end up with a shock 😁
hey bud did you see Austin Evens vid about the PS5 the new one as a smaller heatsink with could lead to over heating?
Is there a mobile app that let's me play on other consoles but as the same time with a controller connect via Bluetooth? (like having a ps4 controller connect to the phone and being able to play on an app that is connected to Xbox or Nintendo, whit the controller )
I have the PS4 with the touch sensors. Eject buttons always fail on them. I had to kapton off the chip on my one because no matter what i did, it would spit the disc back out and make noises...
Well done.
Hi Vince, love your videos 👍. I’m wondering what site you are using to purchase your PS4 parts, I’m enquiring as I am struggling to find parts to repair my PS4. Kind Regards, Des.
My ps4 slim was playing then decided not to eject the disc, I bought and installed the new discdrive, started my ps4, and nuthing. I used the manual screw to take a disc all the way in then hit eject to see if it would take off but only spinner for a moment so what else could be the problem? I just spent $190 on the discdrive a 2tb harddrive please help
