Protecting Veggie Fruit From Sunscald

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Many vegetables are actually fruits. If the part we eat contains seeds, it's a fruit. They include tomatoes, tomatillos, peppers, eggplants, winter squashes (like butternut), summer squashes (like zucchini), cucumbers, green beans, peas, corn, and okra. Some of these are sensitive to long exposure to sunlight and can develop sunscald if the protective leaves do not cover them for much of the day. The purpose of this video is to show a protective measure that will help ensure a good harvest of all the work you put into growing that fruit!

Cool! Your solution was the first one I thought of...down to the small clothes pins. Reuse every year. I've used those aluminum foil sheets you can get pre cut for baking potatoes as a cover. They can be shaped around some areas that don't play nice . Down side of course is that they need replacing annually. Good for a quick fix. Do the squashes get so heavy hanging like that that if you get a wind storm they break away and fall? I haven't grown them vertically before, just cantaloupes and I use a low cost mesh bag to support those (hate losing a ripe cantaloupe because it drops). Anyway following your journey as it progresses. Happy Gardening Brent.

I have 3 Kabochas and 1 Sweet Meat that have sized enough to worry me so I put the supports I used last year under them. I am cautious that way. I'm not sure if they'd hold and I couldn't stand it if they broke after all the work, so... The stem itself is certainly thick enough, but the main vine it attaches to is quite a bit weaker/smaller by comparison. My small seeded watermelon vines are beginning to concern me so I'll be out this afternoon to support the small fruits. It's not that the fruits are that big, but rather the vines are that thin. A video is coming out on them soon. Sure appreciate the interaction Peter. You can share your gardening adventures as well in email if you like. Happy gardening.
