Excellent review! These Pro-Sim/Quaife shifters are a real step up in the game. The larger Pro-Sim SQ I tried was incredible.

I've owned this shifter for over 3 months, it does feel incredible. Videos don't do justice how loud it is to use. The clank is sharp and the sound travels, so something to bear in mind if noise around your environment is a consideration.

How does it compare to the AliExpress magnetic one? I watched your review for that, and now own it, but I am interested in the PSL

Probably the Only SQ shifter I would buy to replace my own DIY SQ shifter which act in a similar way of mimicking the real feel and force. 2 thumbs up

I was expecting a gum ball everytime you shifted. Sadly in iracing the sim gives the option to use shifters not found on actual cars. This IMO detracts from a "sim" and removes authenticity and so creates doubt over the "level" of the playing field. I always use a H pattern in the mx5 and whichever authentic sequential orientation the car has thanks to my fanatec shifter. Honest review. Good work.

seriously though does this even have standard threading for custom shift knobs? I'm confused. why would I buy this when the fanatec 7gear shifter w/ push reverse is just as comprable and can toggle to seq at the flick of a switch with a hefty adjustable throw on top of the price point is more than 120 bucks cheaper and it has 10x1.5 for any knob you want to put on. seriously though. why should I.

Should've selected a car with sequential shifter not the mx5, the caddy on iracing, the BMW gt2 on assetto or tattuus formula, the only downer in the video

I will never agree with the price of these things. It's either the manufacturer just wanna be rich instantly overnight or the consumer is simply rich and crazy to spend that much for something that has very limited if not having it's specific function. That's just 2 buttons essentially... It's never worth it IMO. And in any case of expensive peripheral drooling... DIY is your friend.

Neil de Guzman for 335eu it can be yours! or you could just get the fanatec 7 gear h shifter with sequential toggle, ajustable throw and little sound with a chunky feel that puts this to shame. or support our sim friends and buy DimSim gear! 145 for his seq shifter.

The Fanatec CSS puts this to shame, eh? I own the Fanatec, and have tested the PSL. Although the CSS is an excellent shifter (both H pattern and sequential), the PSL provides a much more realistic shifting feel, and is the clearly superior product. Is it worth twice as much? Not to me, as I don't drive sequential shifter cars too often, and when I do, the Fanatec (or paddles) is sufficient. When PSL H pattern launches, however, the decision will be much more difficult.

Thankfully, the market doesn't care whether you agree. You're not the target market, and neither am I. Professional drivers, and the occasional well heeled enthusiast, will likely buy enough of these to justify the price. More importantly, regular sim racers eventually benefit from these sorts of products, as the technology often trickles down to lower tiers when economies of scale become available. And even if they don't, market competition always benefits consumers. Five years ago, the only DD wheel available (Bodnar SS1) was 4-5K USD, yet in a few months SimXperience will launch the AF V2 at $750 (admittedly needs a wheel), and Fanatec's DD wheel should arrive shortly thereafter.

still. my opinion stands that at the point of realism they are getting at, why not thread the shifter if so what is the thread pitch of this device.

Well, it is a heavy-duty mechanism, so you get heavy-duty sounds.

  • @AutoPassionist

problem is the mechanical sound is more like a tick rather than a big loud clunk which you get in a real transmission...:/

  • @JohnGeorgeHill

If you have a decent sound system turned up to a good volume or good headphones, you shouldn't be hearing anything. You should be hearing the car and the sound effects from the sim. The same goes for computer fan noise and wheel noise.

Simon Povey This shifter has tons of clunk, I used the regular Quaife SQ recently which despite being more expensive still uses the same type of mechanism. Extremely heavy clunk feeling and the closest to real life I have experienced.

  • @MrMarlby

I'm talking about an audible 'clunk'. It might feel great but I use open back headphones and if the 'clicky' gear shift sound is as bad as it is in the video then it would drive me nuts.

Simon Povey Do you like more sound or less or a different type sound? keep in mind a recording makes it sound different than it does in person. The Pro-Sim shifter I used (which is essentially the same shifter with a different housing and handle assembly, same mechanical action to engage the shift) did not sound clicky all. It it was loud but it was a heavy duty clunk sound, similar to the sound you get when releasing the safety latches on an hydraulic automobile lift, particularly an older lift with latches that stick (except without the resonating that happens when the sound vibrates through the large span of the metal lift post of course) Sorry if that is of no help to you, that's just what it reminded me of. You could also compare it to the sound a real sequential transmission in a race car produces. It is loud and definitely clunky but not clicky or tinny if that makes sense. It is a heavy duty sound, like metal mechanical components engaging some sort of action. There was no resonating sound though like you would get from tapping two lengths of pipe together. The shifter is definitely loud, but in my opinion it is a very good loud, like you would hear when banging gears in a sequential shift race car (not that I have driven a SQ trans race car personally, but from what I've heard the sound is similar to this, especially in cars that have a heavy shift actuation) I am quite sure it will be heard through headphones no matter what though.
