Leo Bodnar Sim Steering 2 Force Feedback System Review

Ойындар

This is the official Simpit review of the Leo Bodnar Sim Steering 2 Force Feedback System. The Bodnar Sim Steering wheel is made for and intended for the simulators of Formula One and other professional teams. This wheel is also priced for those teams and can be a rarity in general sim racing. With that said, it is still the most desired wheel in all of sim racing.
We were very lucky enough to get our hands on a Model 53 or the medium strengthened wheel in the 3 wheel lineup from Leo Bodnar Electronics into our shop to be able to really give it a thorough test.
In order to prepare for this review over a month of testing was done, hammering on this wheel and giving it everything we had to see what it was made of.
In this review Shaun covers the details about this fine wheel, the pricing and mounting and installation. Form there he moves on to testing it in a handful of sims and then covers "The Good, The Not So Good and The Bottom Line". By the end of this very detailed review you should know everything there is to know about the Leo Bodnar Sim Steering 2 Force Feedback System.

If you ever had the chance to play the old arcade game "Hard Drivin" it also used a direct drive servo wheel. From the moment I played it as a teenager, up to my middle age, it has been the benchmark against which all other wheels are measured. What I most remember about it was how smooth it was, and no binding, gear noise, or cogging. It could spin freely one moment, and almost rip your arm off the next. I can't wait to get something like this for my rig.

Nice job, Sean. I bought this same wheel in August. Your review is spot on, as far as my personal experience. Yes, it is VERY expensive. But, as you said, it comes down to how much we're willing to or can invest in our hobby. One big issue anyone considering buying this wheel should be aware is that it is really strong. You have to have a solid mount for it. I am about to upgrade my rig to a Fast Track Sim rig. Right now I have a Game Pod. Even after reinforcing the deck it shakes too much under the torque. I also bought a Sam Maxwell rim with shifters, which set me back nearly $1,000. If you have the money it is an amazing wheel.

I can get a G29 for £175 on Amazon without the shifter, I've heard that the T300RS is a better wheel but it costs £250 on Amazon and then I would need to buy new pedals, so is the increase in wheel quality worth the extra money?

you cannot really compare prices of other hobbies Sean. It's about value. Are you getting your moneys worth, is the product you have bought worth the asking price? A fully built plug and play OSW costs about £1100, for the 20nM. THe equivalent Bodnar is £2880 including the VAT! I cannot see where the extra £1700 has gone frankly.

In the motor, the Kollmorgen AKD motor is far superior to the Small MiGE in the OSW kits. In all measurable metrics. That said, the difference in actual driving isn't nearly as big as the spec sheet would suggest.

A stepper motor is brushless though, and you can also very clearly feel said magnetic poles on stepper motors (Not that I have one of these, I've only ever held a small nema17 stepper) AFAIK high end servo motors usually are stepper motors with encoders.

honestly i must be really numb, because apart from the quicker reactions and stronger ffb,i couldnt feel that much difference between a belt drive and this wheel, the only wheel i thought was worth the asking price of the dd range was the accuforce, and that was solely down to simcommander, because you could add effects to help understand what the front tyres were doing. with my limited time with bodnar v2,the ffb effects that i felt, felt exactly the same as my t300,although stronger and tighter, but it did not give extra effects or that much extra detail to know what the tyres were doing to justify the asking price. everyone ive read has said the bodnar and osw type wheels totally transform the ffb,to me they dont, the only one to do that was the accuforce,i personally think these wheels are wasted on iracing, their ffb dont take advantage of what the dd wheel tech offers, example, update rates,360hz in iracing but the wheels are capable of over 500hz,1000hz in total, both read and execute i will say that when i used and osw on rf2,that was a really good experience compared to iracing and i could justify buying one,but then i tried the accuforce on rfpro,i will never be satisfied now, nothing compares to rfpro, nothing. dd wheels are better thand belt drive by design, the lack of lag thru not having belts is the biggest advantage, and until my sim of choice updates its ffb to take advantage of the rest that dd wheels have to offer,i will stick with my t300. some say physics at 60hz is all you need, all i know is,autombilster has proven that wrong

patchedupdemon I own a osw and a t500. I'm letting my best mate use the t500 at the moment. I dont have the ffb strength that high on the osw but the layers of feel in all parts of load on the osw are worlds apart compared to my t500 I regular still drive at my mates. I understand your comments but the more you spend time on the osw the more and more the subtle feeling being to come through the wheel for your sense. It's smooth delivery and biuld up of torque makes my t500 feel like a plastic toy now. but when I first got my osw I actually said to my mate that its not that much better too:). What I will suggest is that the osw is every bit as good as the v2 bodnar. Im lucky enough to have another mate with that wheel and all 3 of us can't tell the difference between the osw and bodnar, except for personal feel. If I was reviewing I'd suggest the bodnar has a bit more inbiult dampening inherent to the wheel software. but again that could be my sensitivity to its forces compared to my osw. The biggest advantage you get with a dd wheel is being able to feel the limit of the rubber all the time not a on and off feel of the t500. It makes for alot more consistant pace without doing heaps of laps to get muscle memory.

Thumbs up for another great vid but I dont see the point of needing that much arm breaking torque. Even a real cars wont do that unless you get in a crash. The last thing I drove that had probably that much torque I was hulling ass in a Humvee off road when I was in the Army. Power steering is so good today in real cars that a low end FFB wheel seems to sim newer cars. Next thing I know people will be mounting wheels to an air hammer ratchet lol.

EXTREMELY overpriced. It's a good motor, but you can get it for 350€ from China. The control unit is even less money, but OK, lets say it costs another 350€. Let's toss another 250€ per unit to cover R+D. Thats around 1000€. everything else is just profits. LOTS of profits. They could cut the price in half and still make good money, and it would make it affordable for a lot more people. I can see myself spending 1500€ on this thing. But 3000€? i can buy a REAL MX-5 in very good condition for that money, for fucks sake. And i would still have enough cash left to make some laps on a racetrack. And whats up with charging 90€ for a piece of metal? 70€ for some pieces of sheet metal with some holes? Everything that's related to this thing costs double than what it should cost. At those prices, they can stick it where the sun never shines.

You obviously have NO clue how much it costs to make quality products!! "A piece of sheet metal"?! Google that and educate yourself before spewing false comments. That adaptor is a CNC machined alloy that's anodized. The price is incredibly fair and reasonable. I have no affiliation with the company.

And you are obviusly out of touch with reality if you think a small piece of stainless steel for 70 bucks is "fair". Do you realize that a METRIC TON of 7075 T6 Aluminium goes for between 2500 and 3500USD if bought industrially (means that you have to buy one tonne at a time)? And I highly doubt that thing is 7075, it''s probably general purpose 6060 or something like that, which is cheaper. Do you know how many adaptors can they make from 1 tonne of material? Let's do some maths. Let's say they didnt buy large quantities and one tonne ended costing them 5000USD. Each adaptor weights 260g. Let's ad a 50% material loss (it's probably much less). That clocks up to 390g per adaptor. There are 1.000.000g in a metric ton. 1.000.000 / 390 = 2.564 adaptors. 5000 USD raw material / 2564 adaptors = 1,95 USD, +100% operating costs (operator time, CNC machine maintenance), 3.9 USD would be te costs of every adaptor. But let's say i'm way off and they cost four times more to manufacture. Thats 15 USD per adaptor. They sell them at 88. That's almost 600% margin. And for a piece that you only buy if you have spent at least 3500USD on one of their products!!!! It should be friggin' included, for god's sake! RIP-OFF. And let's not talk about the brackets... because those are made of stainless steel, that goes for anywhere from 750USD to 1500USD per metric ton. The margings are friggin' insane.
