The Government made 2.2mil from the tender site of Hari Raya Bazaar at Geylang Serai while the small business had to pay 18k rental per month for a stall and the public had to buy expensive food and drinks at the Bazaar. All these inflationary cost starts with land owner charging super high rental and government is the ultimate land owner.

Lee Kuan Yew was the ultimate "Populism" politician. He rode on the rising tide of populism when he established the PAP to sack the British colonial rule. To reject populism per se is to reject the values of the original PAP of the first generation. Lee Hsien Yang is right. PAP has lost its way.

The part that the PAP should really think about - Populism is the best description of the People’s Action Party at its height. It’s simple: They rode into power promising reform and merger, they came to power and the man behind it all, Mr. Lee, did what he promised - reform. But without him, the PAP is much less a populist party than an establishmentarian one - like the Hungarian Fidesz, an anti-EU & anti-liberal party. And much like Fidesz, the PAP loves condemning populism - that is, the populism that isn’t theirs. And honestly, it’s pretty humiliating to be describing the ‘divisive actions’ that rode your own party into power as being a bad thing.

When did populism become a dirty word? It literally means people in latin. And people is 1 of the words in the bloody PAP. So if neither party represents the people, exactly who are they representing?

Both sides presented their points well. This is how a healthy debate should be. As a centrist, I hope there will be less mudslinging (from both sides), and both should, as they have both said, focus on work towards the betterment of Singapore, instead of undermining each other's political parties.

I like the way DPM Larry Wong talks ..like California valley girl.

No. The PAP lost its soul, not Singapore. Singapore is not PAP. 40% of Singaporeans at the least expressed that at the last ballot box. The numbers will rise further after the disastrous response to the pandemic.

And by doing so, it is their children's children that get the brunt of the shit deal from it from decades and yet these daft group just simply cannot get it. Even accounting for the rich, new citizens that would vote for the PAP, the election results show that these groups CANNOT SWAY the resultant % to the PAP's favor in every election since. So it is back to this group of folks mentioned above ,who stay in every HDB estate that voted for it. So like the saying , where the Reform gen sec put it in 2015 says it all " the voters ( those in the HDB) deserved the gov they voted for and I don't want to hear any more complains anymore'

LKY did not even have to resort to such ideological phrases to get things done to improve the lives of Singaporeans in his earlier terms.

Once PAP failed in winning vote from electorates , and new government formed from opposition party, PAP may be dispersed and no longer become future opposition. Therefore, you can’t surely claim that there will be credible opposition in parliament😅

The debate was inspiring.

I would give any speaker, including Mr. Singh, more credits, if the speaker can conveyor messages without a script; and using more down to earth slang rather than phrases in final year papers. I can't help but feel that the script is just another research paper done by a group of hired people, instead of truthful believe of the speaker. Conveying real messages does not require IELTS test like phrases/scripts to make nice.

Let's throw Lawrence a challenge, Go apply for a job incognito with his educational qualifications and see how many interviews he can even get. That is if he can even make it to the queue in front of the friends and fellow villagers of the foreigners who are already deciding on the hiring in a Singapore based company. Najip also had his Mustang moment and standards of integrity and honesty in policy making because there was no one to check on him.

Pritam Singh is highly populist. Considering some legislation put forth by wp does not preclude that the WP is not populist . You can advance a bunch of proposals and yet at the same time pursuing populist ideas .

Seriously people who voted WP is very stupid. When I young I also voted WP, but my life do not become better. So I follow what PAP way of upgrading skill set. I bought a 3room HDB, then upgraded to HUDC, then enbloc and I upgraded to condo. Now I own a few property even my income is below the average income. If young people want to have better life just vote PAP. The more opposition u vote in, Singapore life become harder, just look at Taiwan and Malaysia u know already.

Totally agree. Not only the countries you mentioned,many so called 1st World countries,many parties trying to use populist ideology to gain votes,it didn't help and making it worst. Take one good example,Venezuela, rich in oil,but kept giving out populist promises, in the end,can't keep up with it and now they are in ruin. Imagine Singapore without natural resources, we will go down in less than 10 years.

All because of PAP good policy, now I can retire comfortable, but I decided to continue working to contribute to SG economy. Now young people are more educated see no reason they cannot afford a better lifestyle than me. Remember WP just want to win vote, now there are more WP member in parliament, do ur life improve? So why not just vote PAP and take their advice and we Singaporean all huat together.
