Eckhart is hillarious haha! As someone who is diagnosed with ADHD as an adult I can safely say that this works! It can take a while to see results, just dont give up and find ways to keep it interesting and fun! Thank you to the questioner and of course Eckhart for the answers. I was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, and medication literally changed my life. But it's still a daily struggle. ADHD is not attention deficit, it's an overactive attention on many things at once with great difficulty pointing your attention to one of the things at a time. It's also a low level of dopamine and executive function disorder. Being present, daily practice, meditation, body awareness.. all these have been extremely beneficial to say the least. I can really identify with this questioner, it's still very hard. But practice helps.

I have found that big pharma's prescriptions to treat ADHD, were not worth the Time I spent on them. The trials and errors in changing medications because one didn't work so they tried something else... I wasted my life not to mention the list of effects that come with it because there are no side effects. There are only effects. If I was you, I would look into John Hopkins University in psychiatry and behavioral sciences and look at what they are doing with psychedelic therapy.

@@kusjie I am not Eckhart, but (having ADHD myself) I consider it part of my identity, although it can emerge the ego too when it becomes 'too much'. I can be witty, but when I notice attention from others, the wittyness grows due to the ego, since I experience others like it. When I am on the road driving my car, my ADHD makes me alert of everything (and makes me present in the 'now'), but when a car doesn't give way to me, my ADHD alerts the ego to respond in an overreacting way. Hope this helps a little bit.

Ask yourself, do I have relaxation built into my day? This will take different forms for different people. It will even take different forms on different days for you. The key is choosing something that you know is deeply good for you. Blending relaxation into your weeks, month after month, year after year, will add up. This balance will actually keep you healthier and stave off depression and anxiety over time. So find some joy today. Repeat tomorrow, and watch that balance seep into your months and years. Get ready to look back on a life well spent.

When I was a kid, I had ADHD. I was bouncing off the walls and was in special needs classes at school. Thankfully, I never took medication for it. When I was a teenager, I started meditating and it completely changed me. Although I wish I still had the energy I had, the meditation did calm me in a positive way. I became more clear headed and was able to focus my attention better and be mindful of whatever task was at hand. So I would highly recommend meditation for those with ADD or ADHD. Just don't turn the meditation into a chore. Instead enjoy the process.

@@gaurav3290 I don't really meditate much anymore, but when I did, I would focus on my breath or a maybe a candle. I think I went overboard with it, with my fingers in a circle, and chanting "Om" and all that. I also would make sure I meditated for exactly 15 minutes, so it wasn't really a meditation, since I was thinking more about the time, rather than just allowing myself to be immersed in the moment. So I was pretty legalistic about it, which defeats the whole purpose. If I were to do it all over again, I would just sit quietly in a room and just stop thinking. I might close my eyes. Or maybe not. My main goal would be to stop thinking, and just be alert to my surroundings, knowing that thoughts will come and not grab onto them, and just let them go. I also wouldn't be concerned about a time limit. I would just chill and be present until I felt it was time to stop. Also, because meditation is all about mindfulness, you can meditate by being mindful in all that you do. Fur example, I usually don't listen to anything while I'm driving. Instead, I just immerse myself in the experience. I hear the road noise, and I'm aware of the other vehicles. I feel my car as it goes around the curves. So you can bring a meditative mindset to whatever it is you're doing.

No need to demonize medication, it is very helpful for a lot of people. It's also not either/or, you can meditate and take meds and there's nothing wrong with that. Also, ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder, so it is quite unlikely that you *had* it at one point and don't have it now. What's more probable is that your symptoms have changed (outwardly displayed hyperactivity to the level of "bouncing off the walls" is very uncommon in adults for obvious reasons) and/or you're managing the condition better.

I feel free only when I dont have a job.. But then I do not feel free after all money gone. I am not a lazy looser or something, I am a Phd 40 years old student with 3 previous degrees and various work experiences , and no possessions. I dont owe anything because I suppose my subco😮ncious percieve it as a trap, attachment to one place as well.. But I want to have better quality of life and want to feel free. I feel dependant on employer, scientific advisor, country, situation. I do not think about it at all, but its all sit in me. I have everything to be greatful for, I dreamt of being in academia, living in different countries. But I lie to myself when i say words of gratitude. Because I feel myself in a cage. And this feeling follows me since I was born. What and how can change my perception? Or I really need to change country, start business etc.

I would speak to a psychologist. There are some neurosis/disorders that are strongly counter-dependent, never free enough, glibbly imagining some new circumstance that will be ideal -- only to discover it's not (too many dependencies; an image to live up to that doesn't produce the "return on investment" that was imagined.). Psychology and mindfulness/presence/awakening are not mutually exclusive. They both seek a more honest relationship with reality, the present moment, the only thing that's real (and how the mind deludes the person in the present moment, yearning for something else, not happy with what was previously yearned for.). Some psychologists openly incorporate mindfulness in their therapy. I look at mindfulness/presence/awakening as something the average person can do. But, some people have more repressed/dis-integrated subconscious trauma/anger/shame. Psychology can be the heavy-duty help to be peaceful in the moment (to clear out the past; integrate the subconscious better).

@@markfuller thanks a lot for your reply. I am into psychology, midfulness, philosophies, practice of presence and concentration for many many years. I can easy direct the flow of my thoughts or stop them at all for up to 20 minutes. But I just dont feel connection to the world even if i am present. And I dont feel joy / freedom unless I am in the places of power, mountains, monasteries, by the ocean, or even at some cities. Somehow life sends me to other places, sometimes I have a feeling that it doesn't depend on me much, and there is a plan for me to learn how to live well in the place/ conditions I do not enjoy and make peace with them. I have never had illusions about the places I was moving. Some I knew I would like, others I knew I would hate. Though even in the places I liked I felt a lack of freedom because of the job. But it might be natural feeling of an empathetic person working in a company. Not sure what can help here. I will try to discuss it with psychologist as well but what I noticed, no one can feel exactly what you feel and they follow their script and school. This subject might be more esoterical.

@@TatianaSitnikova Maybe you expect (desire) a connection to the world that isn't realistic? Not accepting what is? A form of craving? (one of twelve factors/spokes of samsara. Feeling leads to craving, leads to clinging, leads to existence through volitional/karmic actions). What if you were an unrealized arahant? :) They've reached a level of disconnect from the 5 aggregates such that the 12 factors are stilled, not leading to endless dependent origination. They have loving kindness for others, but not a yearning for connection. If someone had that level of awakening but didn't realize it, they might think something's wrong? "I can't seem to connect the way I should." When, in fact, it's the arahant's nature to be disconnected? Or, maybe it's a matter of "what is?" If you're working it's probably with unawakened people. You can't relate or feel validated by your surrounding? That would be improved by the 8-fold path (the 2nd step of "right intention" which is non-aversion, loving kindness)? Or, back to the psychological aspect: it sounds a little disassociative? There are people who have gotten into awakening/presense and had disassociative (depersonalization, de-realization) disturbance. They lose their sense of self, how they fit, etc. Going back to the first point above, that may not be bad unless they need the sense of self. If someone has a deep psychological need for a self, they would struggle more with awakening than the average person. (It doesn't sound like you struggle. I guess it's a question of why you feel what is isn't sufficient. That there should be more connection somehow.).

Or sometimes even here in Canada which is empty in terms of energy, I can feel for seconds something real, like wind that came from somewhere else and it brings this real almost physical sensation of life. Also, I felt this way after I visited one great osteopath, so I also connect it with some blocks in the body. Because after that session.. Wow, I was really connected with the world, even traffic on the road, lights, faces, peoples eyes, we were part of the one. But most of the time I feel like I am trapped in the bubble, not of the thoughts, but almost like a physical border between mind/soul and outer world. Not sure if it can even be solved or eased at all. I was even thinking to become a monk but want to try to experience it here, in the world.

Maybe it's easier when dealing with a "mild" situation? What about when dealing with harder situations? Tried to face it by going within me to let it subside, but didn't work

Feeling "your" (the) body, hands, etc. is an illusion created by the ego-mind (which "I" believe is a model created of physiology by the nervous system so it can react accordingly; this is what people normally tend to confuse with the self). When the Self is accessed, it is this being (verb not noun), it is holistic without division and includes the ego-mind, the physiological model, all other ego-minds, and all other beings. It is the universe and the universal godhead. Hard to describe in words. What does it mean to say "your energy field" or "your hands" when referring to Being (noun) being (verb)? That seems to be introducing the ego-mind back into the equation. The point is that all this (division) is illusion.

Shaikh Eckhart Tolle, regarding simplicity and the complicated creation of human being and his happiness of thankfulness as such creature of Loving Creator, regarding diversity of such knowledge up to endless Blessings, there is a lot of light to such endless knowledge of mind up to truthful talented combinated pieces of Qur'an, The Recital, The Light, The Book, The Criterion, The Revelation, The Spirit, pieces that should come together in such approach of yours, and a spring of knowledge from Praised Prophet Muhammad that removes thirst such that (I pray to Loving Allah, Worshipped Creator) to remove materialism, ego, atheism from knowledge, because it makes it sick, blocked fixation, deleted etc, and such that you would truly find yourself as an expert mind and spread to the world the unique western personality with the heart of home, an update of Qur'an nowadays, a beautiful knowledge that everyone needs, everyone, by HIS MERCY, everyone, I swear by HIS ENDLESS MERCY, EXALTED LOVING ALLAH

@@pouncerist It's probably a touchy subject. The simple answer would be that desire is craving (leading to clinging) -- ultimately not accepting the "is-ness" of the moment, reality). But, where do we draw the line on this? Someone said Eckhart dyes his hair (implying that the advocate for being at peace with is'ness isn't practicing what he preaches). They had a point, but then what about women (predominantly) wearing makeup, hiding flaws, or accentuating things more than they are? Or, even clothing? Anything more than sackcloth is egoic in some way (we spend time choosing brands, fit, color, style). It seems to me like this stuff is all on the same spectrum. It's a subjective(?) matter of how far a person goes with it? Any of these things could turn into an obsession. Another example that comes to mind is someone born palsied. Often they will have surgeries to improve that condition. Is that like the topic you're interested in? (Not accepting of the person's is-ness? Or, a reasonable attempt to "fix" a problem using reasonably-accepted means?). It seems like a difficult topic prone to extremes (politics)?

@@markfuller thanks Mark, I agree with what you said and have found my own answer. I would love to hear Eckhart speak about it. It is indeed the politicalness and extremeness of the topic. I talk about people who cut their genetalia off and replace it by something different. Also people who have an extreme thing for body modification that desire to have fingers or even whole legs amputated. People who desire to be blind and let themselves be helped by „psychologists“ to put acid in their eyes. Should we allow surgeons to perform these body modifications? Even if the person „identifies as trans“? Or identifies as some form of disabled or the like?!

@@pouncerist Things like this (and "war on drugs," climate change, etc) are often out of our control but we let it occupy our minds as if we do have control. I think that being able to recognize that and not be too preoccupied with things we can't change is all we can do. I.e., if everyone had that inner awareness (ability to have boundaries pertaining to what they can/can't change, and keep their mental investment reasonable) maybe the world would be a better place (we'd have more of a shared language about being realistically present in the moment. Most problems stem from not being. Maybe that's all we can do is to set an example that, if others followed it, these things would be less divisive, less debatable, etc.). I wish we taught vipassana/mindfulness meditation in school (starting at 3rd grade, 8 yo old). It's interesting to think about what the world would be like if the vast majority of people knew the difference between "me in the moment" and "me thinking/narrating/obsessing/ruminating in the moment." More common language about the dark side of human nature (dark when it's not seen, unknown, everyone chasing something out of their control, easily influenced by appeals to their ego). That might be a more do-able goal than the hot-button issues. IMO, the key is to make it as secular as possible (not new-age, spiritual, etc. No larger topics of cosmology that have to be taken on faith.). Just "this is something anyone can experience, and be better for doing so, being familiar with themselves this way." It doesn't have to mean anything more than that. But, typically is proclaimed to be more. (That leads parents to oppose teaching it in school because it's some kind of religious belief being pushed on impressionable kids.).
