How Do I Practice Presence When Taking Medications?

How do you practice Presence when you need to take medications that cause mental fog or hazy thinking?
Your ability to stay present while taking mind-altering medication depends mainly on the strength and depth of your Presence, shares Eckhart. If your Presence is shaky and new, you may be deeply affected. However, if Presence is well-established, you can retain witnessing Presence while on medication.

I have just spent the last 42 years after being repeatedly sexually abused as a child - living and identifying completely with the most horrific, negative thoughts. I was not a man but a tangle of cutting jagged dark thoughts and feelings. I knew no other way and so truly suffered a life I would not ever wish for anyone. Everyday I searched for ways to study, escape or numb the inner agonies. I found CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and talking therapies helped for some time - sometimes. I’m on some medication for PTSD but they help you get up and function by ‘moderating’ your peaks and troughs. I was given 6 different types of medications through my life, often for misdiagnoses- some of which made me want to end everything. About 8 months ago I found you Eckhart. I heard you talking in the movie ‘VENOM’ strangely enough, and from that moment I started watching your KZread channel. When I could I also got some of your audiobooks so I could listen to you when driving - one of my most hated activities! You told me something no other had! That ‘each time you notice that you are the observer of thought or feelings it has a cumulative effect’. Each time you see that you truly are ‘the space’ and not ‘the noise’ it grows that presence in you. What a stunning helpful insight. Everything with you is an insight Eckhart. You have given me the chance to be alive for the first time without suffering! You have saved me from a fate far worse than death - living as if I was ONLY thoughts and feelings! My rage, hatred, fears and anxieties now, after such a short time are dwindling away. It’s slow but sure. I know I will always experience bad times because that is life, but my reactions can now be something I can be proud of and inspired by as I draw my focus back to my breath, or the spaciousness in me or just a bare-foot glorious walk through soft beach sand! The tiniest things now bring me the greatest joys! A butterfly in my garden or a warm sunny morning with a cup of tea. I make no small claim here - my life has been saved! I now spend many hours each day being present, observing. Noticing what my senses, body or mind are saying, or trying to say. Honestly this state of presence is better than any drug! Maybe that’s now because I no longer need to dull my pain.... Now, because of you Eckhart I will not die from a heart-attack caused by stress or it’s many other side-effects. I cannot thank you enough, but I hope one day to meet you. I feel I already have. Your kindness, humour, affection for humanity and life along with your teaching came along just in time to allow me to live the second half of my life with the greatest peace and fulfilment. I will continue raising awareness of your teachings to others, and be a help to the Earth as I can. You are my life’s greatest Guide. Thank You 🙏

They usually last a few days to a week and it got so bad i couldn't sleep, so on the second night the pain was so bad I thought I'd try a practice and meditated and told myself "i feel no pain i am already healed" in sync with my breathing while focusing on the pain and within 30 mins the pain totally dissipated and I went back to sleep and the toothache had gone. I think this is as good a place as any to share a short story. Last year, I was prescribed antipsychotics, as a result of a doctors visit in which I described the voices and delusions in my head I was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Taking antipsychotics has saved me from being a harm to myself and to others. It has taken away the involuntary thoughts I’ve had. In that sense taking the medication helped me become more present. That being said I would not say I’ve achieved a higher level of consciousness from taking any drug ever. I’ve found breathing and focusing on the breath to be a help as of late when it come to establishing more presence in myself. I would love to hear any other stories :)

Funny enough after an operation I was sedated because of the narcosis and the the strong pain-killers. Having my laptop in the hospital I could only connect to the WiFi offered to the patients in the same hospital. So I needed a VPN. I remember writing a script for an OpenVPN without "thinking." Meaning I was not bothered by neurotic thoughts, perfectionism etc. After a few days I realized that if I could do a perfect job without my usual fight or flight thinking I started to use this "zombie way" (sorry for that: I just named it like that) of thinking during my recovery practices, inter-human communications and also my way of thinking. Every time I caught myself thinking in my pre-operation way I just did not react react on my demanding way of thought-stream. I discovered that when I let my real self do the job the answers came spontaneous and the outcome was moch better than my conditioned way of thinking. I came to realize that I had connected to the this Great Consciousness who also created Life and healed Life. Even did I have "conversations" with this Great Consciousness. I lost my ego and became selfless. My recovery sped up, doctors were amazed. I had several epiphanies which seemed new and at the same time insights I had known since forever. And for example when I was washing myself I did not pay attention to my old, conditioned thoughts but I was using my glove to wash my body. I was living in the present moment. I did not share these things happening to me with anyone out of fear I would have been declared crazy or suffering from PTS. I had a marvellous time, despite the pain. Unfortunately when I got home, rolled back into my old life I also fell back in my old thinking pattern. When I discovered Eckhart Tolle amongst a couple of other people and ancient Buddhist practices I realized that I had not lost my mind in hospital. Instead I learned a lot and now I am practice to come back in the same state of mind. It is not always that easy. One big thing I learned is that everything is ALL RIGHT. And that it is just a matter of choice in which dimension of thoughts you place yourself in. All the chatter in the mind is only blocking and neglecting the eternal help we get from the Universe (no better word can come yo my mind as Great Consciousness). If we are silent and listen we are at the same frequency as the Universe. Thank you Eckhart for giving me affirmation that I am not the only one and that I am not crazy. Peace to all of you.

@@yvesm.8855 There aren't even problems. We think there is a problem as we try to figure out our circumstances. The problem is the excessive thinking of our challenging situations. Especially during most moments in our life when the only happening is our thoughts not the situation reoccuring. Yes there are physical disabilities in more extreme cases, mostly do to trauma of some kind. My sister suffers from hypothyroidism and that is a real chemical imbalance it is something beyond thinking. Hormonal imbalance can trigger all kinds of things. But it can also trigger our mental conditioning as well. In which case Eckhart has helped her in this matter. Because when she does experience troubles with the hypothyroidism, excessive thinking and what is discussed here is also happening, making it worse, and actually the chemical imbalance could make it difficult for people to purposefully be present. She is aware of this now and even though she does still have hypothyroidism, she is aware of a lot this and it has helped her with handling it. She is understanding the parts she can control, the parts she can't and also how her chemical imbalance triggers. She experiences it, understands it, doesn't identify herself with it and when the episodes pass, she isn't continually tortured afterwards and has seen the world completely differently.

Unbearable agony is exactly what you need, friend. Why pray for it to stop? This is the juice of life. Just watch it happen. It comes and goes like everything else. True spirituality is not about optimism and keeping the fight going, it is about the absence of struggle altogether. The depression is not a problem, the problem is your reaction to it and condemnation of it, rejecting what already is the case.

You could taper them gently as you make progress on the spiritual path and under guidance of your doc. Eckhart has never advised on stopping medications. Please check out his videos on Illnesses, he states you can choose whatever medication suits you best, natural or conventional allopathic but alongside be present and don't add psychological pain to your illness. Hope you have also tried probiotics and suitable diet changes. Good luck, as you grow in the spiritual dimension, you will surely be able to reduce your meds.

The challenges of awakened consciousness remain the same under most medications. I find it may be easier to deal with the chatter of the egos mind generated reality while under controlled use of some medications. Many drugs relieve fear based anxiety which is the food ego uses to manifest. The drugs relieve resistance to emotions and thus the ego challenge is less since ego is nothing more than resistance. Unfortunately, it is easy to fall below consciousness rather than rise into it when using medications inappropriately. Ram Dass is a wonderful example of an awakened person who tried drugs as an avenue for awakening. His story is available on KZread. Needless to say he awakened after stopping drug abuse. If you fall into states of unconsciousness then the drug is detrimental or being used inappropriately. I find the latter is more often the case.

Great video. When I discovered 'presence' I named it 'The fly on the wall' (to my own mind). I've found that after discovering it, there is always potential to relapse back into the conditioned mind. Very small amounts of alcohol (as you rightly state) are the fast track ways back to 'the program'. To maintain the presence, takes fortitude. When I experience it in full effect, I'm naturally repulsed by those things which are a detriment to it. It is a state of truth which has no margin for falsehood or poison.

Thank you Eckhart! This has been my favourite video of yours! You are so real and non judgemental. Love the Disprin love! People are too frightened to use medication which sometimes can help them. We just have to have the awareness to stop taking a medication that isn't working - on any level. Bless you. I think it’s wonderful how Mr. Tolle answers the guests questions . This particular topic must be discussed and seen in the correct light . Drug abuse / rehabilitation and the ‘ higher consciousness’ movement must be met with love , support and a teach learn / learn teach approach . We can’t leave this only to the AA/NA groups , for us who seek oneness and also struggle with addiction/ alcoholism.. being pure of mind and body is essential for any type of elevation of self .

I have been persuaded also, though I did not go to Amsterdam. Often I partake in what I now understand to be a self medication and without I find repetitive thoughts of pain and torture I was subjected to as an infant and a toddler. It also allows me far more patience for those who continue to attempt to hurt me. I love you all.lolly

Haha.... Eckhart High.... I have an addictive personality, and that's been a block to my spiritual awakening for many years. I'm extremely blessed to have found coping skills to keep me sober-ish for about ten years now, but it takes daily management to maintain stability.... especially, while also coping with mental health issues. I'm practicing patience with myself and meditations everyday to keep my connection to source open, so I can teach my wisdoms. I often feel frustrated that opening myself up to the public eye hasn't paid off yet, but I know my words are helping to heal the pain of many people. Thanks for letting me vent.... A LOT these past couple years!!! Hahaha have a great week... Dare to Stay Sober
