How Do I Keep From Being Triggered?

How can I be aware of my ego prior to it arising?
Eckhart explains that as you develop deeper Presence, the gap between an aggressive ego assertion and becoming aware of it will shorten. To strengthen our awareness of ego, he suggests practicing Presence in everyday situations so you can notice being taken over by the pain-body.

Eckhart Tolle is widely recognized as one of the most original and inspiring spiritual teachers of our time. He travels and teaches throughout the world.
Eckhart is not aligned with any particular religion or tradition, but excludes none. His profound yet simple and practical teachings have helped thousands of people find inner peace, healing and greater fulfillment in their lives. At the core of his teachings lies the transformation of individual and collective human consciousness - a global spiritual awakening.
Eckhart Tolle is the author of The Power of Now, a #1 New York Times Bestseller, which has been translated into 32 languages and become one of the most influential spiritual books of our time.
In his most recent book, A New Earth, he shows how transcending our ego-based state of consciousness is not only essential to personal happiness, but also the key to ending conflict and suffering throughout the world.

_The flower loves it when you give it attention, because you add something enormous to the flower by giving it attention. The flower is not aware of its own beauty, it just is, and when you unite your consciousness with the flower, through you the flower gets a glimpse of self recognition._ It's true not only for a flower but also for every human being.

I am 43-years-old and just experienced something like this for the very first time. Went on a long hike and was lying down under a big tree. I picked up a leaf and observed the tiniest little caterpillar crawling on the leaf. Watched this tiny creature crawl up the side of the leaf and move its little head up and down and realized this 3-4mm little guy was eating the edge of the leaf. It really just amazed me that I’ve gone my whole life and never slowed down enough to be conscious of something so precious.

I also notice after I’ve been doing multiple public speaking engagements for a while there is a confidence that comes (which is probably ego) where you just feel comfortable in front of the crowd, like they want to hear what you have to say, which may or may not be true depending on the person. When I first started public speaking I felt very self consciousness and rushed.

Anger is normal, the problem is the overwhelming emotion of anger that 'takes over' and the only way to stop this is a paradigm shift. Anger takes over because we aren't thinking straight about a situation and we have to understand that whatever we think we see is only a tiny fraction of the truth in EVERY situation, so we have to remain open to understanding, almost with curiosity. Eg. if someone appears to be attacking us, we may not see that they are dealing with emotional issues themselves or a whole range of problems we do not know about. Once you can recognise this, you can stop personalising it, stop involving your ego and getting overwhelmed and start to simply solve the problem. Overwhelming anger is definitely about attachment to, and viewing the world through, our ego.

I called someone I loved to express my hurt, I yelled, I cried, I fussed and he sat on the phone in silence. He began to speaking shortly after and his tone brought me so much presence to the point my frustration softened into space that then led to love. Sometimes you get lost in pain that has been imprinted from past experiences, I have learned to be more like the element of air and flow with the emotion. Become witness to its affects on both me and my experience, it has taught me how to go deeper into self by leaning into the energy of who I truly am.

"never stop it by suppressing it" - YES. real mindfulness is about feeling your emotions as much as possible inside your body, without thoughts attached. Then it loses momentum by itself, as no thoughts are fuelling it. Ride the wave, as it were. I think that observing your emotions is way more useful than obsessing about the ego. As Eckhart says, it subsides when you see it.. don't fight it because it will just get stronger!

Mine didn't😓... I recognised the pattern -the rising heat of overreaction to a situation - in time to force myself to walk away & find something else to do in order to get the emotion to subside... I went into the shower, visualised the water rinsing away my emotional "eruption"; I breathed deeply for a few minutes... I suspect I didn't believe deeply enough that these remedies would help, as about 20 minutes later, my head began to pound as it does after a heated argument with someone..😔. Perhsps what I'd really done, was merely to suppress my angry indignation, rather than visualising it flowing down the drain with the water. I recovered & at least the usual argument that often arose in the past, didn't happen this time & I'm hugely grateful for that.😔

I'd like to add an experience to this as an after thought... That nature is the nature of Life. When just several years old, I looked closely at a small spider in it's web, coming to wonder if the spider was as aware of me as I was it and, sure right then that it somehow was. A little later, I looked closely at a bush and it's leaves. I became aware that even a single leaf of it was full of life and that life was also in me; with this wonderful gift of life I had been born and my heart felt the recognition of the consciousness of this life, original joy, that I have come to recognise as unconditional love!

This ordering creates all sorts of effects from hatred and domination, to creating furniture, to putting crafts into orbit around the planet, to seeing a business opportunity, to appreciating the beauty of a "rose". Categorization partitions the reality we see before us each day, an obviously useful thing. However, the unintended consequences of partitioning reality are something important to give consideration to.
