The marketing for sneakers is another good example of bad marketing. They put out photos that seems like Itzy was getting a royal concept than did a 180 when the trailer came out. Fans were blindsided and because of that didn’t give sneakers a full chance when it released

the only way that spontaneous concepts are in the case of red velvet. they have never repeated a concept and i think it works bc their concept lies within the name. red velvet reminds ppl of cake and sweetness, while also referring to the rich velvet fabrics. which is associated with sensuality and maturity.

Pink Fantasy is on an indefinite hiatus. Basically, they’re almost as good as disbanded at this point. Right now, they’re focusing on solo projects and endeavors outside of KPop. I think Luvits (their fandom) are in agreement at this point that the mask’s current significance is to help Daewong with her confidence on stage. There are also speculations that the most recent mask wearer (Get Out era) may not be the same as the one from their debut era (Iriwa era). But that’s an entirely different rabbit hole to go down lol

I think TXT are a good example of concept changing well. They always had sad lyrics and concepts, so when the visuals started fitting the themes it wasn’t as shocking. Also, the CROWN-Run Away-CYSM transition was well thought out - at that point they had showed most concepts they were going to do, so now when they switch between them a bit it doesn’t seem weird.

TXT does shift their concept so well. They somehow have a natural growth which is surprising coming from a big company. But they always weirdly chose the wrong b-side to promote. For example, the temptation album. Tinnitus was SO POPULAR but for some reason they never promoted it and did Happy fools instead? Thursdays child album as well, opening sequence was SO loved and yet they promoted other songs. It’s just funny at this point how they always chose the wrong song.

Pink Fantasy's hidden member imo was less of a marketing scheme and more of a way to slip an unconventional member into the lineup without causing controversy. Her identity is kind of an open secret within the fandom, so I won't really discuss that, but she is highly likely perfectly happy with her position in the group! Additionally, while PF is on an "indefinite hiatus" now, two core members fully graduated from the group, and only 5 of them intend to continue with being idols, two of them aiming to be soloists, so it's more like a gentle disbandment while leaving room for reunions/special events. I was glad they had the run they did, not many nugu groups from a fully new company have made it to five years like they did!

Regarding sudden change in concept, I think about the season when Gfriend released “Fingertip” and CLC released “Hobgoblin”, both with concepts that differed from their previously sweet images. When they both went back to being sweet, CLC’s next release was not well received and Gfriend’s was. To my understanding, the difference was that, before the first “experimental” releases, CLC’s fandom was small and completely overrun by brand new fans, demanding that girl crush concept. Gfriend’s established fandom, however was much larger, and the new fans were drowned out by the old. In the end, CLC went hard (and I think that was successful) and Gfriend remained sweet. So, I’m saying, if a group’s fandom is small, a change in concept might help, but with a large, established fandom, it can be hazardous.

I suppose the exception that proves the rule in concept changes would be Dreamcatcher, but the switchover from Minx involved two new members, a new creative team behind the scenes, obviously a new name, they also scrapped the enforced personas they'd foisted on the original members - and that definitely worked out for them. But I can understand why people find it jarring when it's the same group trying to pull that off. B-sides are an ideal place to try out radically different concepts, and groups absolutely should do that, because they can't just churn out the same thing over and over again either. On the subject of cashflow problems though, why not just let the groups make their own videos for their existing B-sides? It'll be silly, but it keeps the fans happy and engaged and might even pull in more people. Dreamcatcher's self-made videos for Sahara, Poison Love and Break the Wall, made during COVID, are great fun and immensely endearing.

The fact that there are new episodes of survival shows so quickly has nothing to do with them wanting to unseat the previous winner but because people are addicted to such shows. The ratings went through the roof, but in the end nobody really cares about the winner (WJSN, Kep1er, EL7Z UP). It's all about the show, drama, etc.. MNET is a master at hosting shows like this and they make tons of money doing it. That's the only reason why we have so many shows. If the ratings fell below a certain level, the shows would also be canceled. Shows that nobody talks about don't make money... or they are held in China or the Philippines where people demand such entertainment even more.

    1) Concept changes: They were the rule rather than the exception in 2nd to 3rd gen, versatility was a requirement for casting idols, and this was actually very successful with Asian audiences. I think it's only western fans and trying to cater to them more, or perhaps also the need to make groups more distinct due to increasing competition and/or simply running out of ideas that changed this. 2) Rarity: I'm not quite convinced that this was ever really a deliberate strategy, but it may just be lack of ideas and resources (eg for international promotion - there's also an actual lack of concert venues in SK!), or simply finding songs that are good enough. Kpop may have achieved a certain level of "industrial" production, but increasing competition also means it's become more difficult to stand out, so I don't think that "bad" comebacks are ever intentional.

I see many people praising TXT for their success in changing concepts. I see that as a praise tbh. The only time it didn't work was SRR to DILT which leads to TNCF underperforming. I think this is also another kind of bad marketing: lame a*s tt videos and overhyping the song (thanks Ryan Tedder). Objectively it's not a bad song, but when you got to hear it many times in your feed with uncreative tt, it makes you grew tired real quick. DILT also feels like a sore thumb in Freefall, as it doesn't really connect with the album's storyline. Unlike TNCT in which they tell a story about falling into the devil's temptation (DBTW) but then ended up leaving it behind (Farewell, Neverland).

i think some good examples of a successful gradual transition in concept are mamamoo and apink. mamamoo were always known for their vocals, so when they switched from a brighter retro concept to a more mature concept, they still kept the powerhouse vocals. for apink they were known for their cute and bright image but when they switched to a mature concept they didn’t just become super sexy and have trap beats in their songs. they had a more elegant vibe and kept the softer synthesizer sound. groups like brave girls, rainbow and others have had very jarring concept changes almost every comeback, and for brave girls it didn’t help that they were always going through so many member changes. members constantly joining and leaving a group def doesn’t help with the longevity and success of the group. fans become attached to a certain dynamic and chemistry of the group, so it just makes stanning a group too unpredictable and jarring. i honestly think it would be better for the groups to just continue on with less members

With the topic of Sudden Concept changes: we can keep Seventeen as a good sudden sound changes throughtout their recent comebacks. After their comeback with _world we would have thought, "yeah Seventeen is going for mature concept in a bright way"but after that we have their comeback Super (Sonogong) which was so unexpected but so exciting for fans so as to see such a senior group do their performance with such a high difficulty and energy level. Super was a good sudden change as the group wanted to showcase their ability to control the stage presence and performance. They again switched their sound with 'God of Music' which was so subtle and soft. And after their Maestro comeback they switched their sound again but now if you see the groups past few comeback titles you'll notice 'Super(Sonogong)' 'God of Music' and 'Maestro' are the titles they're actually talking about them.

But once i heard that there would be a face reveal based on if they won or when she changed to a regular mask i felt those were bad ideas. 1. Because thats too much pressure to put on a person and the group. 2. A partial mask kills the illusion, just make the face reveal a big deal with a comeback song.

Have to disagree with your reasons about Queendom 1 and 2. Mamamoo won season 1 and WJSN won season 2, however Mamamoo became more popular and are still active, meanwhile WJSN's popularity stalled and are practically disbanded. Mention Queendom and everyone can name Mamamoo as the winners of season 1 while not many can name WJSN as winners of season 2.

I feel like ATEEZ are one of the few groups I’ve seen who are consistently well marketed and can do basically any concept they like, and I think that’s a real product of two things: they established their ability to do all sorts of concepts right from the start, whilst having their identity as the pirate group firmly cemented throughout it all without it being so restrictive as to limit them to any one genre. The pirate stuff is more of a vibe. And their marketing often goes really well with the comeback and their lore, particularly with Outlaw which had everything from destroying displays outside concerts to them selling chilli peppers 😭

I’m sorry but nothing can convince me JYPE originally planned to do a royalty concept with Sneakers. The lyrics and message of the song don't connect with that theme, and none of the other songs on the album mention royalty or chess. They probably initially planned a royal/chess themed title track and filmed the teasers months in advance, but ran into a problem. so they chose to go with Sneakers and tried to incorporate the royal concept into the mv last minute, to avoid reshooting the album photos. It's pretty bad marketing to have an album called Checkmate, the album cover art is a giant chess piece but there are no references to chess or royalty in the music?? It was false advertising, but I don't think it was intentional. They were probably just trying to salvage the concept.

love ur content, but i have to disagree with ur first point. the strategy of releasing a small amount of music and spreading out CB every few years can be very successful, if done correctly. I would point to you that YG took this approach with BP. I understand ur point and would agree that this strategy would not work for a brand new group, but a group that has a well establish fanbase can work very well. We can all agree that BP music is not the greatest in the world, but every time they come back, it is a huge thing for the industry as a whole.

  • @luv_theluv4311

This strategy literally ONLY works for big groups under large labels. Most other groups outside the top 5 would have drastic drop in sales or chart placement after a few comebacks with that strategy. The fact blackpink are still relevant despite putting out barely anything is an outlier for success with that strategy, not the standard for success with it. Not to mention, people would just move on to newer groups since at least they have something to do now

I think your sixth line is the exact point of the whole conversation , BP is from a big 3 company wich this already gave them a privilege for being famous and then they start giving fan less comeback after they become so famous with debut and the comeback after that but BP never was a normal case they were a very famous group and with lots of brand deal and a rich and famous company that could backup them and the name of it alone be a reason for fame they were the group wich start trending girl crush concept again and because of that have lots of impact at kpop itself also they had lots of influence at fashion too so if you think about it they kinda have a point it's not a really good strategy if you don't have this kind of condition ( and honestly I think one of the reason that help yg to use this strategy is the most toxic thing about BP : there solo Stan they kill to see there fave only one more minute that onth tree and call it a victory for themselves)

  • @b1sib1si

I don't think one can say that the strategy works just because it worked for BP. Blackpink are one of a kind, they had and still have a strong personal brand, which is very rare in kpop. This combined with their glamorous image (one in two years comeback) kept people eager for more. Blackpink had also a very unique YG girl crush concept at the time.
