Pontoon Boat - Colorado XTS Customized - hands free steering and remote throttle | Goes To 11
Hi Everyone, I got a lot of great comments about the pontoon boat pics I posted, so here is a description as to the modifications we did to the boat and I have to say the boat turned out perfect! This video shows you how I built my pontoon boat into a hands free steering and remote throttle plus a bunch of other customizations. Please feel free to ask any questions about the build and I will get back to you asap.

    Have you had any heating issues with the PWM? How exactly do you have the fish finder connected? Is it directly to the battery with battery clamp?

    Hi Jason...thanks for watching and commenting. I have not had any issues yet but I am making a modification to the controller box to prevent any overheating that may happen, especially on hot weather days. I ordered 2 small fans for graphic cards that are rated for 12v. I will put one on opposing sides of the box, utilizing the already existing holes that are capped on the box. The one fan will be drawing air into the box, the opposing fan will be flipped to draw air out of the box. Here are the links to the fans: amzn.to/3ajBipa (Canadian Orders) amzn.to/3ebUd6L (U.S. Orders) Regarding the Fish Finder, I always bring a small 12v battery for it and I get several hours of use from it. This helps extend the trolling time I get out of my main battery. If I am out there long enough to drain the small battery, I just clip the fish finder onto the main battery for a little extra time on the water. You can use alligator clips on the fish finder to make it easy to swap power supply. Here is something similar to the smaller battery I was mentioning: amzn.to/3ttKijn (Canadian Orders) amzn.to/3tvaTfT (U.S. Orders) I hope this information helps. Cheers, Rick

    I will also add an on/ off quick switch to mine like I did on my canoe rig. When you are fishing down a bank & need to make small corections it is easier to just bump the switch on & off. That way you can leave the power at the same speed instead of turning it all the way down then back up.

    Hello, I wanted to say thank u for the great ideas, I have applied them all to our pontoons. Thought I would share an issue I had with the controller. I have 3 of them, all of them only reverse worked. Also they would get hot quickly. I had an electrical engineering at work help me out. He mentioned that any of these with a circuit board will fail quickly. He suggested the "HIMA dc speed controller, brush motor driver controls module DC 9v-60v 12v 24v 36v48v 60v motor pulse width modulator regulator 20a 1200w PWM monitor dimmer governor with switch and knob" Available on Amazon for $16. I tried the bungee for the steering and they were ok with small movements. After hours on the water they didn't work that good, but I will be changing these also. I will repost on how the new controller works out. Again thanks for the video and all the pointers to make these pontoons much nicer for fishing. Regards, Pinstriper

    Hey Jeff, thank you for the great feedback! I may order one of those controllers as a backup. Since I made the video, I added a couple small fans to my box for airflow. I'll be trying them out next week to see how it does for temp. I used Paracord for the steering, it is more reactive than a bungee. I look forward to hearing how things are working out for you with it all and thank you again for your support, I really appreciate it!! Tight lines bro! Cheers, Rick

    if you haven't found out by now... that metal clamp on your downrigger will damage your cable... use two cable ties... loop one as a cable guide and use the other to secure the loop to the downrigger rod inline with the depth gauge... it will be less abrasive.

    @GoesTo11

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Bill, thank you for watching and commenting - I appreciate your support and am glad you enjoyed the video! You can attach a grass guard but I haven't experienced the need for it. I do sometimes go through some shallows and have clipped the bottom of the shore but the plastic blades are pretty durable and are inexpensive to replace if needed. The prop itself does not come close to the pontoons, since it is mounted mid point of the frame, so there is no concern about that. I am excited to get back onto the water this Spring! I hope you have subscribed to the channel, lots of great content coming! Love to see your pontoon build if you do one. Tight lines my friend!!

    Thanks bro, I appreciate your watching and commenting! I'm just over 6'2" and weigh 240lbs and have not had any issues. The boat is rated for 400lbs, so no worries there. The recent adjustment I did is I bought a taller mast for the seat so I sit higher off the ground. I throw both in my vehicle and decide once at the water how I want to ride in the boat. It's an easy change out and you can swap back to the low profile mast if you want. I hope this helps and I'd appreciate you Subscribing to the channel if you haven't already. Awesome, thank you! I haven't tested for max speed but will try in the next couple of weeks when I can get out on a lake. I'm using a 30lb thrust. The boat rating says it's the biggest size it should use. I did test out my 55lb thrust and it had it moving pretty quick and on full caused weight to distribute towards the back and lifted the front of the pontoons up...not a great situation. Hi Christopher, I can swivel the chair to direct the boat in whatever direction needed. Hi Adam...they're super easy for transport! I have a MINI Cooper and it fits in the back no problem. I leave pontoons attached to each side frame (but deflated obviously). They can stack on top of each other or side by side and the middle frame with seat fits easily. The motor, battery, etc is all removable and easily stowed. For storage at home I hang the pontoons from roof of garage 3/4 inflated. Kudos to you and Glen for a job well done. Simplicity makes for a relaxed fishing adventure. Now some questions for you. I have an Endura 40# motor that has an 8 gauge power cable attached, and those Atwater quick connects are 10 gauge. Have you run into any issues since you’ve stepped down to a smaller wire? Also...what size pipe hanger did you mount on your motor steering system? Also was there any reason you bought that switch, when the motor speed controller came with one? Thanks a heap for your great info! Oh yah...I’m in the Seattle area, and I’m guessing you’re above me on the other side of the border. Possibly B.C.? Mike

    Hey there, thank you for watching and commenting - we appreciate your support! My MK is the 30# and I have not noticed any issues and Glen is a Millwright and would not have done it if there would be problems. I highly doubt you would have issues with the 40# and frankly, the draw is not a crazy load but I will message him tomorrow for his thoughts and get back to you. I also need to see if I can find my receipt for the pipe hangers, I had a heck of a time finding them online and went to a local plumbing company to buy them. The vertical shaft of the motor is not very large, I just cannot remember the exact O/D of it. The setup makes for a far more pleasant day on the water and makes it a lot easier to fight a fish! Yes, I am located just across the Border in Surrey, B.C. I love Seattle and have been there many times for day trips to guitar shops and the E.M.P.! Unfortunately, I don't think the Border will be opening any time soon. Hope you are staying safe and doing well my friend! I will let you know the answers to your questions tomorrow! @@GoesTo11 Ha! I just knew we were neighbors. I appreciate your prompt reply. Yes, I don’t see a big issue with the wiring, but thought I’d ask if you were tripping the breaker or anything like that. Since the quick connect leads are short, they shouldn’t be an issue. I’ll probably just go with the Atwaters. Today I welded up a bracket to the center of my rear frame, so I could mount the motor in the middle. Now to find a swivel to attach to my chair! This is soooo gonna be worth it. Thanks again, Buddy. Cheers and stay safe!

    @@sweetcakes3706 lol yup, just north of ya Bro! 🇨🇦🇺🇲 I just spoke to Glen and he said that the wires shouldn't be an issue but you should look at the Owner's Manual or contact the Company to be sure. We don't want to say "yeah, do it" and have your motor fry lol. Personally, I would go for it, but that is just what I would do (as I did on mine). I accepted the risk to my own equipment. The circuit breaker works great, though I've not tripped it. The area you'll want to watch is heat on the pentiometer. The box is enclosed to keep water out with no airflow. Hi Nathaniel, thank you for watching and commenting! All of the items are listed in the video description. Here's the ones I used: Scotty #243-BK Square Rail Mount (I just drilled a hole through it and into tubing frame then used self tapping screws) amzn.to/2WnZSP5 I hope this helps you out! I'd really appreciate you subscribing to the channel, it helps me too! Cheers, Rick :)

    Hey, is there somewhere I can contact you about the motor details? I recently picked up an XTS secondhand and I want to get more info on how you did it! I initially wanted to make these mods to a 36" 55 lbs Minn Kota, but the 30/30 is $100 and the 36/55 is $250, so a no brainer for warranty voiding purposes. One problem, doesn't the motor not go deep enough into the water though?

    How do I go by registering my one man pontoon boat, can someone help me please?

  • @GoesTo11

    @GoesTo11

    3 жыл бұрын

    Registration requirements will vary depending upon where you are. If you are in Canada, visit this site: tc.canada.ca/en/marine-transportation/vessel-licensing-registration To the best of my knowledge, at least here in B.C., you only need to register if you're using a motor over 10hp. The pontoon I show in this video cannot have anything larger than a 30lb thrust electric, therefore it does not require registration. I hope this helps you out. Please subscribe to the channel, it helps me out! Cheers, Rick

    Hi Yacine...thank you for watching and commenting. I used a Scotty Mount on the frame (here is the item: amzn.to/2WnZSP5 ). I then used a Scotty Mount for the Fish Finder ( amzn.to/3dh5t1g ). It all works really well and I am super happy with the end result! I hope you will subscribe to the channel and feel free to ask any other questions about the pontoon setup. Cheers, Rick

    Looks like you could easily mount 3 of the new small LiPo4 batteries and still not weigh anymore than the 1 lead acid and get many hours of run time.

    True, but I would need a chunk of money to buy them lol. Those little batteries are crazy expensive but would sure be nice to have!
