Plug & Play, Manual Gear Position Indicator for the G37: MotorvateDIY Garage Ep.43

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hey everyone,
This is just a short video to show some more progress on our CAN Bus & Bluetooth "Mini-Dash"
Through many hours of reverse engineering the G37 gauge cluster, we have found the CAN bus message to display the gear numbers 1 to 8 ON THE FACTORY LCD in the gauge cluster.
Why would the cluster show 8th gear? Well in Japan, there was a version of the G37 sold with a "high torque" CVT type transmission and it "simulated" 8 gears... so the gauge cluster must also show 8 gears.
Now, since we can control what gear number is displayed via a CAN bus message, how do we figure out what gear we are in? On the G37 there are no gear position sensors, just a switch for reverse and a switch to indicate neutral...
However... If you divide the engine RPM, by the vehicle speed, you end up with a number (RPM/speed slope) that is fairly constant when in that gear. For example, 1st gear results in 115, second gear is 68.
And we simple listen to the CAN bus to get the engine RPM and current vehicle speed then do some quick math.
Now that we know the gear, we fire off the correct CAN bus message to tell the middle LCD display in the factory cluster to display that number.
This works perfectly when the clutch is fully released.
However, when the clutch is slipping (like during a start) or if in neutral and rolling to a stop, the indicated gear may not be accurate.
We are going to continue testing and see what strategies we can use to reduce or prevent this.
Anyways, that's all for now!!

Figuring out the gear from the speed and rpm is genius! Awesome finding that you can send it to the oem display and have it work.

Thanks... To be honest, it was one of the moments when the logic should work, but I wasn't sure I had it.... then seeing the 1-2-3-4-5-6 on the cluster was awesome!! I don't need to know what gear I am in, but I sure like seeing that number on the cluster :)

Thanks! I think it's funny... I have been driving manual transmissions since the early 80s and I don't need to know what gear it is in... BUT for some silly reason... seeing the gear on the stock gauge cluster makes the "boy racer" in me smile :)

In the next few weeks I am meeting up with a few Q50 owners to collect some data on their car and test our CAN bu & Bluetooth gauges. From the little bit of data I have so far, the G37 and Q50 vehicle networks look to be similar, so something may be possible.

Hey I've been watching a lot of your videos and find them extremely useful! I was just curious if you are still using your easy epoxy fix for the diff bushing? Or did you end up installing the aftermarket bushing? Just want to know if the epoxy fix was worth it as a long term fix, thank you!!

Yes, the epoxy filled bushing is still on the car. Late last year, I mounted a camera to see how it is holding up after three years, which will be a future episode. (hint: its good!)

Thank you! The "swoosh" sound you heard is the normal sound from the 6 speed manual, when changing gears... It is a little gear whine. I have ordered the parts to make 10 stand alone units for testing on some local G37s. It will plug into the OBD port and will be about the size of an ELM327 mini, which is about 1" deep - nice an small :)

Thank you Tyler! I have been reverse engineering the G37's CAN bus since last summer... it has been fun and I have learned a lot... But, as I see it now, I think most of the "good stuff" is figured out. In the next episode, I will dig into the new data logging features and I'll talk about things every VHR owner needs to know: engine oil pressure and engine oil temp. (plus some other cool items that no one else has talked about )

Not sure just yet... I know it works well on my G37, but I really want to test it on other years of G37 to make sure Infiniti didn't change anything on the car's network and to make sure the hardware can handle the harsh environment of an automobile. Now that the weather is warming up and car meets are starting up, I will be able to test this on different years of G37 and get a good sense for what it works on :)

Sort of... I can't display the current gear in the same spot as the P, R, D. BUT I have made a stand alone LCD display that does display the automatic transmission fluid temp, current gear, torque converter status (locked or sliding) and a few other items. I can't show that in action now, as my G has a manual transmission. BUT I do have a few volunteers who have offered to help me test and shoot a video. More on this in the next few weeks.
