I just started driving an Eaton 8LL manual in my quad axle mack dump truck at work and it's been grinding like crazy, and during the day it gets harder to shift, not easy like it used to be where it could mesh together as it should. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Man! Thank you. You're probably the nicest person that I have ever watched on KZread as far as car repair goes. My wife's Jette 5speed manual mk4 1.9 tdi has issues with shifting. We did auto to manual swap, then replaced the transmission again for a good one but here and there shift stick gets stiff and it is very difficult to engage or disengage. Or to change the gear. I have to force it very strongly to do make it move. Clutch is brand new, the clutch pedal goes down extremely easy like I have never had with any other car - maybe there's the connection to the problem? I am puzzled on this where to look and what to fix...

First was shifting between first and second gear vice versa were hard to shift some times, after a while the problem decrease, after some times get stuck in third gear for a while that happens a couple of times and now when a try to change between four and third gear sometimes is not possible to get the shift, I have to take to the second and then change into the third, any advice or suggestion I beginning to think that maybe is the shift cable.

Hi the 1st and reverse gear on my vw touran get completed jammed in gear and I can't get it back out without force or having to turn the engine off. I have had the clutch fluid drained and replaced but its still causing me issues. Do you think this could be the master cylinder or the slave cylinder. ?. My 2020 plate I've had for a month has struggled to go into first gear sometimes! It feels like it's blocked, so I've had to bring it out, put it in again and again until it goes in! Then another time I'm stopped and had gear in neutral....I've went into 1st gear and it's not fully engaged with clutch all the way down and jumped back out....another time it fully went in and went to accelerate and made a gear crunching noise, then had to bring out and put in......and finally in 4th gear I can see the gear bobbing back and forwards when engaging and disengaging the accelerator! I've had a vauxhall viva without any issues with the gears and my partner had a Corsa for 11 year with no major issues either! May I ask what do you think the main problem is???

Thanks for the video! Perhaps you would have ideas for my issue? I have volvo c30 with MTX 75 transmission and it is difficult to shift to 1 and reverse when starting to move, but if I would hold a clutch pressed for more than 30 seconds then the shift is a lot easier, or if I would first shift to 3 then to 1 it is much easier. Also difficult to downshift without rev matching, with rev matching with no problem. When engine is not running shifts easy to any gear. Also when car get's warm issue almost disappears. I had replaced the gearbox oil and it did not give any result, but the oil which came out was quite dark. The car had 45000 km at the time. Biting point of the clutch is quit high, almost at the top so I don't think it is an issue with clutch disengagement. I also tried to put the car on the lift and put on the 1 gear with pressed clutch, the wheels were not moving, so I excluded the master cylinder issue, however I did not check for the leaks. The only idea which I had left is that the splines of the gearbox shaft are not lubricated enough so the clutch disc does not slide easy on the shaft away from the flywheel when clutch is disengaged and creates parasitic torque which is large enough to create resistance for the shifting but not large enough for wheels to spin. It also explains why the smaller the gear the larger the resistance and I guess when car gets hot the spline part of the clutch disc gets expanded + existing oil on the spline works better when warm. Also fits fly if I keep clutch pressed for a while it is easy to shift because from the vibration the clutch disc finally moves away from the flywheel. However I tried to lubricate the splines using a boroscope and oil spray through throughaway bearing window and it did not help. Perhaps the oil did not penetrate to the depth of the splines. Does this theory make any sense for you? Do you have any ideas what I can do?

Hi MechanicBase (or anyone else that can possibly help). Im going to apoligize now for the legnth of my question but hopefully ive got all the info in there for the mechanic geniuses here that we all love. I feel I may be on the right path with troubleshooting my issue but any help/advice would be much appreciated. I have a 1990 Toyota hilux RWD - 4Y carby petrol that was used as a daily driver. Roughly 18 months ago it was taken off the road to have some maintenance done - new carby, new head gaskets and some body work, but nothing that would disturb the gearbox as the engine was left in the body during this time. Finally fired it back up and got it running smooth the other weekend but for some reason now I cant get into gear with the engine running and the clutch pushed in. I can turn the engine off and put the truck into gear good as gold but when the motors running its feels like theres a wall or barrier preventing me from moving the stick fully into the gear slot. - still has normal play in the neutral area with motor running so you can line up the shifter to each position fine, but it wont actually slot into the position where 1st, 2nd or 3rd ect are. Closest it would get to actually going in would be reverse but it would start to grind/crunch at a certain point and im not keen on forcing it in lol. Being so long ago its hard to tell but the Clutch pedal could perhaps be a little less springy than before but it feels relatively normal to press and pedal returns just fine, However it is as if the clutch itself isnt doing anything. Therss no noise that comes with the clutch being pushed in either which i beleive you would normally hear if the release bearing was having issues. Everything sounds and feels normal and as it should. Ive also put the stick into gear with the engine switched off and then turned the ignition over to see if i would lurch foward with the clutch pedal pushed in and it did indeed. So this is where I stand... Does anyone know if its even possible that my clutch plate (which was working fine beforehand) could have somehow crapped itself while not in use for roughly 18 months or is this likely to be something else like the release bearing seizing or even something else thats less intrusive haha. Im probably clutching at straws here but if i can avoid having to take out the gearbox then im a happy man haha Again, Any advice is much appreciated.

This morning I couldn't get into 5th gear or 6th, then while parked and going into reverse it was stiff! I don't usually drive or used my car since I work closer to home now. So not sure what's happening but I noticed that since Christmas the clutch would squeak when Pressing down on the pedal. The clutch was replaced back in August 2020 so it should still be fine? The mechanic I spoke to said that it was an old clutch that would need to be replaced but I told him it's barely 4 years old how's that. He tried to say after 2 years should be changed lol Nah not going back there again. Need to figure out what's wrong, before taking it in... This video was very informative but unfortunately I don't have anywhere where I could lift the car up and try to have a look?

Thank you for the video. It is very helpful. I have a mk 5 vw polo petrol with manual 5 speed gearbox. 110,000 miles. I don't drive it very hard. I do a lot of miles in 5th gear at 50mph. Recently I have had trouble going from 4th to 5th gear. The gear level just won't let me put it into 5th. If I am a bit more aggressive with using the throttle and then coming off it then somethimes will go into 5th. All other gears are fine and go in very smoothly. The weather has got very cold recently and in a couple of my old cars before this seemed to affect gears. I am hoping that the gearbox is fine and the problem is something 'cheaper'. Any advice would be appreciated and I am sure will help a lot of others. Thanks

Master cylinders can fail without leaking , they can bleed fluid back into the reservoir and give the same symptoms of hard to select gears and over time the ingagement point gets lower and lower to the floor as the seals continue to fail.

My manual transmission is easy to shift gear on the first hour of usage. After that it becomes difficult (almost impossible) to shift gears. The next day, it's the same problem - easy to shift for the first hour, then difficult to shift afterwards. Is this a mechanical problem or an oil problem?

I have a 2014 Mazda Mx-5 with the 6 speed manual. I'm having shifting issues from cold start to about 10-15 minutes of driving. Only in 2nd and 3rd gear. 1st, 4th and reverse don't feel the best but no problems shifting into those gears. 2nd and 3rd I get soft lock outs, a second or third attempt is usually needed. Sometimes the shift is ok but that's maybe 1 of 10 shifts. 3rd you can sort of feel a kick back when shifting up or down into it. Down shifting from 4th to 3rd is the worst and takes the longest time to clear up. After 10-15 minutes if driving all gears feel pretty good, minor notchy feels here and there. I've changed the transmission fluid to red line GL4. Put on about 3000 miles after change, no change feels the same as before. My clutch pedal bite point is very high, free play seems set right but you only have to press the clutch pedal down about 2 inches to shift, or less. After changing gears when lifting the clutch pedal back there is almost no feel of engagement, dead feeling. Really cold days the clutch pedal is very slow to come back, takes a few minutes to go back to normal. Not currently doing this now however. Only like 38000 miles on the car, second owner. 😞

Hi, Have you found out the problem? I have a Mazda 6 2016 2.2 and I have exactly the same problem but with the first and second gear. This started to happen after I changed the clutch and flywheel(130000 miles). Changed trans fluid twice and still having the problem especially on cold weather. I am still trying to find a mechanic to help me fix the problem but no one so far.

  • @absoluteclownworld

@Lupu Marius Gabriel No I haven't solved it yet, I've only done trans fluid ( redline ) and played with my clutch adjustment a bit. Still 2nd and 3rd gear hard to shift into when cold for 5 to 10 mins. If I shift fast or higher rpm it seems to be better but still very frustrating 😞

@Lupu Marius Gabriel In the winter it could take up to 20 mins, but now that's it's a little warmer out it's around 10 mins now on average. It could still be the clutch adjustment and I'm just not setting it correctly.. or just the way my transmissions tolerances are.. pretty common problem from what I can tell. Maybe throw out bearing or pilot bearing as well. Mechanics all the same, everything seems fine, tight tolerance transmission blah blah..

Does it still do it when the engine is off, if yes then its linkage of no then does the clutch pedal feel weird, if yes its probably a cylinder if the pedal feels fine its probably the actual clutch, if you think it's a cylinder check resevoir levels and look for obvious leaks or small puddles, its usually the slave cylinder on/in the gearbox itself!

Well, at least now I have an idea what could be the issue of my Skoda Octavia 2 (2008). Tho I saw this too late as my clutch is probably burned. It actually happend today. I was going to work, the car barelly shifted into gears. While on the road the car stopped going into gears, saw smoke coming out of the hood and a strong smell of clutch fluid going straight into my nose. I quickly got in a sade place on the side of the road and shut it down. That scared me really badly.

If it will shift fine with the engine off its probably a clutch issue if its still winter go into gear with the engine off it'll be a connector/linkage issue, if its clutch if the pedal feels fine clutch kit time if the pedal is weird look for leaking cylinders, puddles on floor, resevoir levels ect...
