My husband was out today at the end of our property splitting up goat pastures and found tons! of peonies...I need to get them out regardless because if I dont, the goats will eat them...they are already budding so I hope they transplant and not hurt them ...

Your video is exactly what I was looking for! I have a container peony and wanted to make sure I plant it in the ground correctly. Thank you for showing the steps. One question, how far are the peony plants spaced from each other? My plant tag says it needs 3-4 feet space!

Fortunately peonies are very cold-hardy! I've seen them survive -40 winters regularly with no real pre-winter maintenance. That being said, I do like to do a little fall care for peonies. My autumn routine for peonies is to wait until the leaves die back, and then cut off the foliage before the whole thing gets buried in snow. I leave about 6" of each stem so that I'm not cutting too close to the crown of the plant and so I know where it will come up next spring! Mulch is the other thing. After the ground freezes hard, I cover the whole area with a few inches of shredded leaves. This winter protective mulch acts as insulation, keeping the plant from enduring too many freeze/thaw cycles. Happy gardening!

Hi Why is there always such a large piece of wood with the crown

I think 2 feet between the plants is nice

Hi! I have a question! I planted peonies for the first time last year. This year I can already see the red eyes peeking above the soil. Have I planted them too shallow? Should I mulch the area with compost so the eyes are covered?

Some of mine have the little eyes poking out already too. It's crazy how the shallow ones can survive cold winters with so little cover, but yeah, they are incredible 🤷‍♀️ I had a couple newly-planted peonies that heaved over the winter and the eyes were all grouped right at surface - I just dug carefully under them to lower the level of the eyes, and then covered the plant with 1"-2" of soil. For my peony plants that were just a tad shallow - yes, I generally top-dress with a half inch to inch of compost if there's space above them.

@@HomefortheHarvest do you top dress the whole thing eyes and all or just the diameter around it (like drip line)! I know the peonies don’t like mulch too close to them but compost is different and they’d like that, right? Thank you so much for replying!

I’m so upset. The guy that cut our lawn today trimmed my growing peonies. I’m worried that he ruined them and they will not grow.

No worry , peony are very forgiving plants! They will keep showing up every spring to give you big blooms! Mine, I don't even fertilize and every year I divide them and throw the cuttings in a corner and they will show up the next spring!
