That's great. They should over time. Did they flower the following year though or did they need longer to recover. Usually they do.

I’ve moved into a house where there are 3 herbaceous peonies planted in quite a bit of shade. I may get about 3 flowers each from them. I now feel confident at moving them to a sunnier location. Thanks!

When my mom had to go to an assisted living (in Kansas), i dug up her 50 year old peonies. I Fed X'd them to Washugton State . They have done very well.

Wow, that’s a lot more complicated than I thought it would be. I think my peonies are gonna stay right where they are, lol. 😅

I have some peonies I have been wanting to move since the trees are shading the beds now. I heard too not to move them or they will die. My response was well if they stay in the shade, they will never bloom and die anyway. So I am so glad I found your video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us! 😊

You are perfectly right. A peony that never flowers has little value. But the good news is that your peonies should go on to thrive if you move them at the right time.

HI Rachel i think it was Robert Herrick who wrote Fair Daffodils, we weep to see You haste away so soon;,i always think of the Peony in the same way. The flower is one of the most beautiful one to look at. Having said that its still worth growing . TY as ever Rachel.

Well said, Frank. I couldn't agree more about the peony. They are my favourite perennial flower of all.

That was surprisingly easy to lift.....when I saw where the Peony was that you wanted to move, my heart sank...tree roots.... but no, in the end it behaved. I'm sure it will look lovely flowering in front of the greenhouse next year. I finally planted Itoh peonies in my garden this week, so looking forward to that next year.

Here in IL in the U.S.A., and northern states, best to move peonies in September. This gives them enough time to root back in before the soil freezes. Also, flower timing is different between tree and herbaceous peonies. Trees flower first, herbaceous after. Great way to extend the peony season - especially when the season is so short anyway.

I saw another video that recommended moving them in mid August, before the first frost. I can wait until October, as the ground doesn't freeze before November, So is it better to wait until the first frost, whenever it occurs?

@@abeal49 You're not so concerned with the first frost, but a hard freeze. You want to be sure the roots have time to grow and take hold after transplanting. Best to find recommendations for where you live and garden. In the U.S.A., your nearest extension office or public garden/arboretum would be good places to start for a recommendation.

This was the most helpful video that I found on the topic. You zoomed in and walked us through it visually the entire time. That’s what’s needed the first time. It’s stressful so this really helped. Fingers crossed it works. Thanks!

I'm about to transplant some of my peonies,they're too close to other plants. It's Autumn here in New Zealand so I've waited until the foliage died down before cutting to the ground. Thanks for the tip about using a plank to measure depth to plant,one of my plants hasn't flowered ,I think it was planted too deep. Very helpful video,thanks so much !

If I have to transplant my peonies between October & February, I'll need a pick-axe to break through the frozen ground Lol. I'm Canadian & the snow started flying in October. Hello. Love your enthusiasm. In my garden I replant and divide herbaceous peonies. It is safe to do so if plant has at least 7 to 10 stems. I do it in the fall. ( Southern Ontario,Canada). Tree peonies don’t like to be disturbed after planting. Better find the best spot for them and let them do their thing. Peonies are my most favorite plants. I only wish they bloomed longer. Good luck with yours.

Never stop Dreaming; I have a tree peony that is 40 years old. Never been moved, full sun. It was disturbed by my dog- she chewed the heck out of it, so I had to go in with pruners and clean it up; I thought it was going to die and I was frustrated with my pooch. The following spring it came back with loads of flowers and looked much healthier-I was happily surprised. My thoughts now is they need a rejuvenating pruning-( my dog did this mid summer!)

Good to hear. I like to keep the measuring tape handy when I plant peonies because the herbaceous ones are planted so shockingly near the surface that, without the tape, I am always tempted to bury them just a little deeper 😂 Thanks for watching and I hope your second peony flowers for you this spring.

I have a tree peony (pink) that is 40 years old. It has a lovely fragrance; blooms in the spring around my birthday. The blooms don’t last long but every year I look forward to these blooms that are bigger than my hand. One year my dog chewed up the hole tree so bad …it looked like a mess. I cleaned it up and thought it wouldn’t make it. The following spring it was full of blooms and quite spectacular. So pondering on this I think tree peonies need a good pruning to rejuvenate.

Hmmm, I hope so too. You still get plenty of shoots if you plant too deeply so that isn't the problem.

Thats a very helpful video for me , as I may need to divide the one single flowered herbaceous peony I have in future if it gets too big for its allocated space. I love single flowered peonies particularly because its nice watching the bees rolling around getting pollen from the mass of stamens, its a pity that most garden centres only tend to stock a few popular double flowered varieties and the confusing Bowl of Beauty which I bought by mistake before as it looks like a single flowered peony but isn't! I remember your single flowered yellow tree peony in a past video and that looked really nice. Also, I like how you call a peony a 'peony rose' at the start!

Peonies are just fabulous plants, whether they're single or double. The plant I move in this video is the ubiquitous 'Bowl of Beauty' and I planted it a really long time ago. It is a good do-er and personally I love the flowers. The yellow peony you are referring to is either 'Bartzella' or 'Garden Treasure', both of which are interesectional peonies. I highly recommend both. I do love the central parts of single peonies like these. There is something quite captivating about those chunking bulbous centres. Interesectional peonies tend to be single flowered, I think. Peonies are my favourite perennial flower. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment and have a great day.

@@GardeningatDouentza Yes I do agree with you that peonies are great looking, especially because of their size, some of the biggest garden flowers you can get apart from sunflowers. I do still like the double flowered forms aesthetically. I was reading recently about an island in the Bristol Channel called Steep Holm where wild peonies have become naturalised over hundreds of years. Nobody knows for certain how they became introduced there.

Itoh hybrids get planted to the same depth as herbaceous. I would follow the same method for moving it. If it's in the wrong spot it has to move.

When we bought our house 1986 I have one peonies bush and now I have like 24 of it ! You have to have at list 3 stick coming out of the root ! Hustas are easier to divid then peonies . Too bad the flower ‘s life is so short 😢

Hi there. Thank you for your message received yesterday (not 5th as you mention). 'Dried out' is not good. Do you see swollen noses on your roots? These should be plump. I don't know where you are or what your outside temperatures are currently like but I would be inclined to pot the roots up in a pot, water them and keep them somewhere sheltered but bright until the outside temperatures warm up. Peonies need at least 6 weeks after planting when they get no frost. Spring is normally a good time for planting peonies as long as you keep them watered as they establish. In any case, you need to plant these roots. You can't keep them until autumn before planting. Hope this helps.

I have been wanting to transplant mine. Thank you for your video. Question for you. My peonies have a white mild dew on them. I cut most that had the powdery mild dew early summer but the dew has come back and is now moving to others. Can I cut them down now (it late July in NY now) and then there after transpant them to another area?

Personally I would not cut peony foliage back now. Why not wait until September when you move them?

Thanks for this video! I've bought a new house which has a raised wall in the garden, with a peony that's just about to bloom. Unfortunately this coincides with the arrival of a skip this Friday as we planned to knock the wall down and clear the garden. You've mentioned the best time to move a peony is from the autumn, is there anything I can do to save this plant at this time of year once I've dug it up?

Hi there. If the skip is coming on Friday then you have no choice but to dig up your peony. It will probably sulk and not flower for a year or two but it shouldn't die. The important thig is to keep it well watered for the rest of the summer, whether that's in a pot or the ground.

I transplanted 160 peonies today. I take the bits and bobs and put tgem in a trench. Eventually some grow.

Important to state that peonies planted in temperate climates don't need planting at depth. At surface is fine exposing more to the cold. Peonies are heavy feeders so additional feeding at planting is useful. Chicken manure and cow manure will all help in nutrition with additional blood and bone for establishment.

Can I move my peony after it blooms? I’m in zone 5b.

I recently went to visit my brother in the Netherlands and bought myself a peony. It is a HUGE risk, and it might not grow (I live in Costa Rica) but Im gonna plant it in my familys cottage up in the mountain where the climate is cooler. I absolutely love them so Im taking a leap of faith here. The things im not sure which side of the garden it should be facing. Any tips?

Hello there and congratulations on your recent peony purchase. I',m sorry but I can't advise on how to grow a peony in Costa Rica. Here they are planted in full sun with a fertile soil and watered well the first year.

So I appreciate your advice and insight. One more question about some tubers that I came across that look healthy but they were separated from each other, no eyes, and no roots. Interestingly, it is now August, and my yellow tree peony has grown a flower bud and flowered. Very strange, and usually a sign (generally in plants) of stress. Hotter than normal year for sure.

It can be a sign of stress. We have had a wetter than usual summer so not suffering from the same problem at all 😂

I’m not sure why the tubers with no eyes don’t grow there. I’ve planted them without eyes and the eyes grew out and I got three plants that are thriving. Very interesting.

If you have a big enough tuber that broke off can it be replanted and do any good? I don’t see an eye on it.

It is possible that there is a dormant eye on your broken tuber. Maybe try planting it in a pot so you can keep an eye on it!

How do i tell which one i have by the leaves or thickness of stems..it also dies back every year. Been growing this from 2 small pieces for 15 yrs and hasn't flowerd help please

If the stems die back every winter, you have a herbaceous peony. Insufficient light or too deep planting are the usual reasons why a herbaceous peony doesn't flower.

Thank you. I have been planting my Peony wrong. 🤦‍♀️ I'm going to move my Peony out of the shady area into a full sun area. The only problem is my full sun area is paved with cement. Any recommendation on the size of container I need to put my Peony in???

Peonies need space and should be planted 3¼ft apart. The ideal pot size to start off with is 1-1.5ft. As your peony grows you can transfer it to a bigger container which will likely be every 3 to 4 years. If you already have a potted peony that’s outgrowing its pot it's best to wait until October to transplant it to a bigger one. Hope this helps.

Well, even though it isn't the right time, you have to do it. Remove any flower spikes. Try to damage the roots as little as possible so dig a bit wider and deeper than you think. Transplant and keep well watered for the rest of the season. Hope this helps.

Hello Rachel, we have an issue with our yellow tree peony (now a very healthy, 10 years old) but that only gives blooms (5) on one stem. How do we get it to bloom on the other limbs?

I am not sure what to suggest. Is your plant getting enough light, not just the one branch?

Thank you for your reply. Yes, the tree gets plenty of light and sunshine. It is possible it needs to be thinned out as it’s very full with many branches. @@GardeningatDouentza

I find that the species tree peonies (like Paeonia lutea and Paeonia delavayi) get very congested. The grafted ones less so. I regularly prune branches out of mine to improve the overall look of them, trying to let light and air to the centre. It's worth a try and will probably lead to a more handsome specimen anyway.@@tonyeastman153

We don't use the zone system in Ireland but we're considered as hardiness zone 9.

It is better to devide your peony plant for 3-5 eys parts. If you make it bigger, the plant will flower the next year, but after its’ developpement will be slow and not really good.

Actually, I don't agree with you. Peonies do not benefit from division like other perennials. It is only done for gardeners' benefit, not the benefit of the plant.

Here in the SE states the peonies don't like our long hot summer and lack of cold, so I plant them just barely under the ground where they will be exposed to more cold in the winter.

@@GardeningatDouentza yes combined with selecting varieties that are more heat tolerant (usually single flower form) I do that as well with the Siberian irises which need more cold than I can give them.

Does dividing an old plant increase it's vigor, like in rhubarb?

No, peonies are different from other herbaceous plants. They don't need to be divided regularly.

I have no problem growing peony. They are very forgiving plants. Do not expect them to bloom the following year upon transferring. Wait a second year to bloom. Some one just gave me a peony they got rid off due to ants. I took it, look for good open space in my yard. Then, by spring comes the blooming peony. Cut it back down to about and inch from ground every fall. They keep growing and blooming every spring. I have not done anything special, fertilizer, only the sunshine, rains will do the job.

I'm glad peonies do so well for you. They are fabulous plants. The one moved in this video flowered the following year, as you can see from subsequent videos.

If a plant is buried too shallowly then it is more susceptible to damage, especially from winter cold.

Does flower smell or no smell at all..??

Some peonies are scented.

Had mine for 3 years never bloom. Just leaves. Grrrr

If the peony is mature enough to flower the most common reasons for it not to flower are 1. insufficient light or 2. planted too deeply. Try replanting it!
