Planting Peony Rhizomes: How to and Care

Peonies are a beloved herbaceous perennial that lives for many years in the garden. Generally peonies are grown from rhizomes but peony rhizomes look a bit funky and can sometimes scare gardeners that have never planted them before. Well in this video I outline exactly how to plant those peony rhizomes, both in containers and in the garden bed. Any questions, comment below! If you enjoy the video, subscribe to stay tuned for more videos on the way.

    I planted my first a few weeks ago. And I was intimidated! The the eyes were bright pink. After a week, the color became dull. I was so disappointed. I thought maybe the lights were too bright and it burnt. But after a lot of searching I realized it’s growing nicely.

    You're inspired me to run out and purchase a peony for my little yard--well, when this self-isolation comes to an end. It will give me something to look forward to. My parents have a peony next to their front door and it is draped in sunshine throughout the day. It's been there for years and thrives. It is my understanding that peonies are like the tortoise in the plant world--with the rigtht conditions, they can live for years. Thanks, Devin. Cheers, Darryl

    Love your channel and your enthusiasm!!!! It kinda grows on people. Pun intended. However, I still have nightmares about peonies. I spent summers on our family dairy farm in western Illinois. The fruit and vegetable gardens along with the rest of the property were manicured. Even around the fields we mowed the weeds. When I was about 14 or 15 my uncle decided it would be a good job for me to dig out all the peonies from the front of the house to the hard road on both sides of the sidewalk (about 150 ft). I still have nightmares because it seemed like each plant had a colony of ants. Loved the farm, hated that summer. Anyway, thanks for the great info!!!

    Houseplants are harder than anything else. They are picky buttholes. If you’ve mastered houseplants, you’re going to do great with all others. Just be sure your containers have good drainage, just like you would with houseplants.

    Hi, does it matter if you plant it in spring or fall? I heard if you plant them in the spring they won’t bloom for you ever. Is that true? Will you do a update video on the ones you planted in this video? Thank you for the awesome video!

  • @plantvibrations

    I've never heard that spring planting doesn't lead to blooms! i think thats fake news! the important thing is the depth of the crown in the ground/soil. i think generally planting in autumn is more beneficial but i do both.

Hope you can help thank you Cathy

  • @plantvibrations

    @plantvibrations

    typically they can take two years to start blooming, so there may not be any problem. but one common reason for peonies to not bloom well is if they are planted too deeply. they also like to be fertilized in the spring while they are actively growing. fertilizing them now likely won't do much for this season, but it can't hurt

  • @plantvibrations

    @@cathyjones3618 the 1 inch deep does not include the mulch. so your layer of mulch is ok. but make sure to leave space around the crown of the peony rhizome from the mulch.

    Thank you for the video! May I ask what type of soil did you use? I recently planted my peony rhizomes in Miracle Gro Potting Mix (Grow Plants Twice as Big) and now that i'm reading other online sources....it seems like this soil is not ideal due the amount of nitrogen it has. This is my first time planting peonies, would you please advise which soil type is best, thank you!

  • @plantvibrations

    @plantvibrations

    3 жыл бұрын

    honestly i think you will be just fine with that mix. peonies are very long lived and can adjust to variable conditions, i wouldn't worry. i just used a generic bagged potting mix as well. more important than that is just getting the crown placed correctly in the soil.

    I have a dilemma about where to place the pot . I have a terrace which receives sunlight from morn to evening it's okay in winter coz the sun is not that strong but at other times the heat will be too strong. And other place is also a terrace but it has roof ,it gets slight sunlight but not much where should I plant it . please tell me. In the roofed terrace I grow periwinkle, amaryllis, jasmines etc

    hi nandita. i think either location would be fine. the first location, by the time the weather starts to get super hot, the peony will likely have already bloomed so the excess heat won't matter too much. the roof sounds like a good location too and will create more even growth, but may take longer to reach maturity.
