I want to make a garden worthy of the home. I've already started with hydrangeas this fall and will add peonies, dahlias in the spring. It's early November and I don't want to risk losing anything over the winter months.

Coming to you from CT. I have a bartzella Itoh peony that's magnificent and I was deeply concerned about the fungal matter on the leaves last fall. I cut down the peopy (did so in the late summer after the blooms fell) and my peony plant has returned bigger and more beautiful than ever. Crossing fingers that it'll bloom! Nice informative video. There’s no problem composting those cuttings. The compost pile is a huge well of fungal & bacterial activity that will quickly overwhelm mildew or botrytis. - Whatever you do, please don’t put them in the landfill waste stream. If you don’t feel at ease composting them them, put them in yard waste pickup and let your municipality do the good work of composting them.

Hi Kelly. Peony question from Reading, Pennsylvania. I have Peonies that were planted by my late grandmother in the late 1940's and they are still going strong. In this video you mentioned mulching around the stems in the fall but not to cover them. Two years ago I started covering all my flowerbeds with leaves in the fall. It did not affect their blooming this year, but wondering if this is something I should not do going forward. Thank you.

Hi Kelly, my name is Carrie and I live in the great state of Indiana, a small town called Brookville. Hardiness zone 5b and 6a. I have a herbaceous peony plant that has been planted since maybe 2001. It is placed in the front of the house about 2 feet away from the structure facing the west. The soil is maybe a clay like substance with some dirt. I was wondering if I need to move it to a lower location to get more air through it and sun? Your channel is so informative and very easy to understand and Lucy makes it that much better!, I LOVE LUCY!, Also, does it matter if I cut it down first then move it or wait til after?

Nice video. Good reminder to people to toss out all diseased plants. If a compost pile gets extremely hot you might get away composting questionable items but most piles never achieve that so my motto is when in doubt toss it out

I noticed the fungus or whatever disease was on the stems that you left sticking out of the ground. Do you ever fully cut those stems? Won't the fungus on the stems become a problem. Great video that answered my immediate concerns.

I am in Knoxville TN and I planted 2 Sarah Bernhardts this summer. They are still very young. I have not had any blooms yet. Should I still cut them back like you did? Thank you!

Good luck! You may want to consider trying to remove some of the soil from the top , Just be super careful you don't scrape off the red eye buds you may see coming off the bare root . These are next years stems and flowers . 🌸😊

I’m thinking there’s got to be another way to get rid of these mildewed stems and leaves other than passing the problem on by putting them in a plastic, non-compostable garbage bag and sending it to landfill. I get that they shouldn’t go to compost, but the organic matter and the plastic don’t belong in a landfill either. Your thoughts?

Hi Kelly, I live in beautiful Kingston, Ontario. We're hosting our daughter's wedding at our home in a couple of weeks and I'm tidying my gardens for the event. I'm concerned about my 4 peony plants. It's early August and all 4 plants are not looking very good because they have that dusty mildew and brown spots on them. I never had it so bad and it looks terrible for the wedding! Would it be harmful to the plant if I cut them back this early (August instead of October/november)?? Thank you!

When fall comes I chop them back. The ones out in the yard I just mow them down! Mine are old, kind of cream colored and they smell like perfume!

The stems on my Sarah Bernhardt are pretty sturdy . Maybe it the variety that you have that has a weird stem . Can you try a different peony cage around it or maybe a tomato cage and add some gardeners tape for extra support looped loosely around the stem and secured to side . Good luck 👍

Hi Collette, it’s best to give them at least six weeks before the ground freezes but I have three peonies I’m putting in the ground zone weekend and I’m done 6b .

Hi Carmen . Excellent question! Yes fall leaves make for a great flower bed mulch here is a some advice from Gardeners on how to use it . I am going to try to make a video explaining these tips . How to turn fall leaves into fuel for next year's garden By Kathy LaLiberte Turn autumn leaves into something special by shredding them with the electric Leaf Mulcher. The close of the gardening season is always bittersweet. Though there are few more beautiful places on earth than Vermont in the autumn, I just hate saying goodbye to all my plants and trading this lush, green world for one that's cold and white. But there are also plenty of good things about fall. The weather is cool and the humidity is low. Once we've had our first killing frost, the frantic pace of the harvest season is over. It's time for apples and potatoes, pumpkins and mums. And, it's time to reap the season's most abundant crop: leaves. The longer I garden, the greater my appreciation for the value of organic matter. And one of the very best sources of organic matter is autumn leaves. Leaves are packed with trace minerals that trees draw up from deep in the soil. When added to your garden, leaves feed earthworms and beneficial microbes. They lighten heavy soils and help sandy soils retain moisture. They make an attractive mulch in the flower garden. They're a fabulous source of carbon to balance the nitrogen in your compost pile. And they insulate tender plants from cold. Here are a few easy ways that I've found to put leaves to work in my garden. Shredded leaves take up much less space. First, shred up as many of them as you can. I don't have a leaf shredder, though I'm considering purchasing one. Instead, I let the leaves pile up on the lawn and then drive over them a few times with the lawn mower. Shredding one leaf into five or ten smaller pieces does several good things. It increases the surface area, giving microbes many more places to work. It prevents the leaves from packing together into layers that won't let water or air penetrate. And it reduces the volume dramatically. Once the leaves are shredded, I rake them up. Most of them go into plastic trash bags that get stashed in the barn for next spring when I'll use them as mulch in my perennial gardens. In time, shredded leaves become something called leaf mold, which makes a fabulous mulch. What's more, it does wonders for the soil, and I like the look of it. As for the rest of the shredded leaves, some get put aside for a month or so to be used for mulching my garlic, tender perennials and roses. The rest get carted over to the vegetable and cutting gardens. The beds in these two gardens are permanent, so it's easy to focus all my soil-building energy right in the growing zone. As the beds get cleaned out, I cover the soil with a layer of shredded leaves and fork that in a bit. On top goes some granular organic fertilizer and - if I have any - some compost. By spring it's all a crumbly mix that plants would be crazy not to love. Gather leaves in half the time with these Giant Hands Leaf Collectors To mulch the asparagus bed, I first cut the fronds down to about 12 inches. The bed gets a good helping of granular fertilizer and is then covered with a 3-inch layer of shredded leaves. Not all the leaves in my yard get shredded, though if I had the time I'd probably do so. By November, I've usually run out of steam and simply pack the rest of the whole leaves into my compost bin. I add these leaves to the working compost pile throughout the year to balance the food scraps and other materials that are usually high nitrogen. The leaves also keep the pile from getting compacted and soggy. For me, keeping busy is the best way to fend off the blues, which is how I sometimes feel as winter approaches. Raking and hauling and digging and spreading keep me moving and my gardens just get better and easier to care for every year. Using Shredded Leaves If you have an abundant source of leaves in the fall, shred them. Your garden will benefit in a big way. Here how to use them: * Insulate Tender Plants: A 6-inch blanket of leaves protects tender plants from winter wind and cold. Cover cold-hardy vegetables-such as carrots, kale, leeks and beets-and you'll be able to harvest them all winter. * Boost Your Compost Pile: Carbon-rich leaves balance high-nitrogen compost ingredients such as fresh grass clippings. * Improve Your Soil: Mix shredded leaves right into your garden. Next spring, your soil will be teeming with earthworms and other beneficial organisms. * Make "Leaf Mold": Simply rake the leaves into a big pile. If you shred them, they will decompose faster, but you can still make leaf mold without shredding. After one to three years, fungus will have broken the leaves down to a special compost that smells like a walk through the woods. Leaf mold is high in calcium and magnesium and retains three to five times its weight in water-rivaling peat moss. Think Before You Shred * Be careful with some kinds of leaves. Walnut, eucalyptus and camphor laurel leaves contain substances that inhibit plant growth. It's best to compost these leaves before using them in your garden * Be sure to chop or shred leaves before using them as mulch. Whole leaves can form a mat that water can't penetrate. * If you add shredded leaves right to the soil, add some slow-release nitrogen fertilizers to help the leaves decompose and to ensure that soil microbes don't use all of the available nitrogen.

Hi Kelly, I am in South Orange NJ and I have a couple of peonies that did not bloom if they are too deep is it ok to bring a bit closer to the surface?

Sounds like you figured out the peony mystery in your garden . Yep, peonies that are planted deeper than two inches may give you green leaves but no blooms . Fall is a great time to dig them up and replant them with only two inches of soil on top of the eyes ( the little red nubs sticking out of the bare root ) . Good call flower friend . 😊👍🌸

Can I plant peonies in pots??

I planted my peonie’s root in May. Seven months will pass, and it will be November. Should I cut it as close as possible to the ground this November; in fall?

Josie in Indianapolis, Indiana. I have about 10 peony bushes in my yard. I just let them die a natural death and in spring I pull the dead dry stems. I used to work with a guy who said the last mowing he does in fall he mows right over his peonies -- and they always come back in spring. Just saying.
