I love my old fashioned Hydrangeas. My Grandmother had them. She always pruned down every fall. I have never pruned mine. They are always covered in blooms. Thanks for your wonderful information. Tipp City, OH

Thank you for the video. We live in Alabama and have a lady who tends our garden for us. Unfortunately, she got hurt and can't work right now. She trims them back every year down to the 18" you were talking about because the area isn't that big. Every year we get some amazing blooms. I didn't know what time of year to do it, so watching this video gave me the right information on when to do it. The weather here in North West Alabama usually turns cooler right around Halloween. I will wait till late November to tackle that job.

Omg...I've been so worried about when and how and then I found you!! THANK YOU! I am so grateful that I now know that I've been cutting off all the next years blooms which makes so much sense. Now I know why mine had hardly any flowers. Thank you Kelly. Oh, and I live on beautiful Vancouver Island in Nanaimo BC, Canada.

Just starting with anabelle hydrangea in Ireland (zone 8-9). People here seems to cut to the ground in late autumn or winter, but I really like the idea of leaving some structure to support the new growth. Thanks for all the info!

Thanks Kelly! I live in Tiffin, Ohio, which is NW Ohio. I think I am in Zone 5. I've been raking leaves like crazy lately. Usually, we have the entire Women's Softball team from Heidelberg University help us, now that our sons are grown and gone, but with Covid we had to do it ourselves. I'm still finishing the beds, pulling weeds and I'm about to go buy mulch. Thanks! Take care and enjoy!!

Dallas, Texas. My grandmother grew hydrangeas on their farm, but I am clueless. I moved into a house with big leaf hydrangeas, which now have cercospora on them. I’m trying to figure out if I should prune all the affected leaves off to prevent it from affecting new growth. Glad to find your channel!

Thanks for educating me on my hydrangeas that I don’t even know what kinds they are and I guess I have been lucky in my pruning of them every year because they have been really inconsistent in bulb sizes and colors. I live in So. Calif.

This past spring, after watching lots of videos & not having tons of blooms in the past, I pruned mine. Terrific blooms! BUT then as summer wore on, I had some strange white stuff on some leaves. It looked like coarse kosher salt. Research revealed that it was hydrangea borers. The treatment was to cut them back until there was not hollow stalk left & then seal them with nail polish. After a few hours of work, I quit. I hope they live!

Well this solves my problem. Never read about them but every year just thought I needed to cut down for the winter to only get green leaves in the summer no blooms. This year I had one pink bloom. So it’s nov 5 2022. I will leave them completely alone. Excited to see what it does in spring/summer brings. Thanks

Hi Kelly, just found your videos, very interesting thank you, best wishes from EVE in the UK 🇬🇧.

I waited end of August Scotland and removed dried out flowers and damaged leaves. They have lots of good strong new shoots.I trowelled in some slow release granules to see them through the winter. X fingers I have done the right thing. Mine are growing in pots and can cloche them during strong winds and severe cold weather.

Thanks for the video... I see your hydrangeas had some leaf damage from the summer hail storm we had this year.

Thank you! Atlanta here. Love our huge limelights, won’t touch. Their roots creeped through a tiny hole from a tiny cracked planter. Will not try to break it apart. They get full full sun. I’ve covered couple branches w dirt and have made several new plantings.

@@KellyLehman Hi Kelly, thanks for sharing the great tips. We also reside in Northern California. We have 28 bushes of mophead, lacecaps and annabelle white hydrangeas, most of them are grown on old woods. Questions: Now we are in mid July here, is it fine that we remove the blooms and prune down to 1/3 of the stems in length, in order to promote more new growths for next summer? Our hydrangeas are grown in ground. How tall should we keep them in height? A lot of articles suggest people to prune the mopheads in spring. Thanks for your detailed explanations that the information was misleading.

Oops, I pruned my plant already (Aug), trying to get rid of the parts with spots. Hope I left enough to look good next year here in Delaware. The spots are really bad so I will clean out the junk under the plant and give it more air like you suggest. I like your laid back style !

Greetings from Montreal Canada. I never cut my hydrangeas. I have several varieties. In the spring I simply trim the dry flower heads. They are my favorites in my fall garden. I love your channel.

@@KellyLehman Kelly. Thank you. I wish I can show you how they look. My upmost favorites are the Strawberry pink hydrengias. They grow tall. Later on they become this beautiful dark pink. I never knew much about them at first. I never cut them. Every year they bloom amazingly. This year I planted 2 anabelles end of summer. They had leaves. I knew they will not bloom this year. I can't wait to see them next year.
