The ironic thing is that the kid is right. If you give two people one acre of land each, you can produce WAY MORE food and feed way more people growing vegetables and fruits than you can raising pigs or cows. And you'd use much less water and resources doing so. I'm not even vegan, so I don't really care. But what the kid said is FACT. The higher up the food chain you eat, the more energy and resources you consume. Not only that, but toxins get concentrated as it moves up the food chain. Eat lower on the food chain (plant foods), and you will consume less toxins. It's basic science.

Similarly, crops take a lot of water as well, and the "food chain" you talk about isn't really applicable, since cows aren't being fed pristine golden apples for food, they are being fed grass and feed, which are a lot cheaper to make than vegetables humans eat. Even worse, many vegan foods such as almonds, for instance, take even more resources and pollute the environment even more through their transportation costs. In all honesty, while I am hardly a vegan friend (heck, i got to admit that I probably eat a bit too much meat) and I got to say that the young fella definetly seemed to fit the sterotypes of the young left-leaning activist soy-boy, that Piers could have been a bit less bellicose. There were genuine moments when the kid was trying to bring forth valid points, but was cut off by Piers and it circled all back to the same point. A bit of a pitty, really.

I myself am not a vegan, but a vegetarian, so I consume animal products like eggs and milk, but I don't eat meat. People who eat a lot of meat have a significantly higher risk of impotence and cancer. There has been less research on the health of vegans. From your response, besides concerns (which are very understandable), I can also see that you are not well informed about the changes that are happening now. I mentioned cultured meat above. This is not a meat alternative but actual animal meat. With a muscle tissue the size of a grain of rice, they can already make 40,000 hamburgers or meatballs. You then consume real animal cells without any animals being killed. Cultured milk is also in development now. It's real meat (real muscle tissue from real animals with real animal DNA) that has been grown in a lab. @@PussNBootosthat’s not even remotely true. You can fit animal products into a balanced healthy diet as a treat in small amounts, maybe a few ounces a week. Environmentally, factory farms use less resources when they cram animals into small spaces and never let them roam. There are plenty of health and environmental reason to be predominately plant based, but the only reason to be 100% vegan is for the animals, which is more than enough for me.
