Peter Works out "Commercially Sensitive" Figures in SECONDS | Dragons' Den

Ойын-сауық

Former Merchant Navy Officer John Bull is pitching for £50,000 in return for a 20% equity stake... he hopes to gain knowledge from Peter Jones that will allow him to lower his production fees. After sharing a story of his struggle, Peter asks if he has come into The Den for an "investment or counselling?"
An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

    Honestly though he was right. The way he came up with that sob story when nobody asked him about his story, it sounded like the guy was just trying to make the judges gain sympathy for him. Peter asked him what was wrong with suits, not for his entire life story. They're there to do a job, not to listen to his rambling.

    @SavageArfad If the guy didn't want things going personal, he shouldn't have started telling a personal story. It's a business negotiation. He's trying to get the dragons to give him their money. The dragons will do what they can to stir him up and put him under pressure in order to see his character in order to decide whether he's worth giving money to. You're right, if he snapped back then the dragons would've been down his throat. Because he shouldn't snap back. He should keep his cool. Like I said, it's a business negotiation. He should've treated it as such and he should've expected the dragons to attack him when he walked in there. And besides, Peter was still in the right. Peter asked a question, then he answered the question and then started talking about his life story. Not the place for that kind of talk.

    I agree, it was savage. I've seen previous season where a woman was actually crying throughout her pitch. And yet the dragons fell for her emotional manipulation. Women can get away with that kind of BS.

    Mark Brewer the trick was getting someone else to say what they didn’t want to say. It’s more than just “doing maths”, it’s psychological manipulation. If it were just “doing maths” then Peter would have said it, but he didn’t, he got the other guy to say it. Maths is just a small part of magic, the rest is misdirection.

  • @MarksMindBox

    @MarksMindBox

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@turtleinashirt as a trained cognitive scientist, I can assure you that there is nothing that could be defined as "psychological manipulation" (whatever you think you mean by that) on display in this video. Peter used data that had already been given by the speaker, talked him through a calculation and then stated the answer himself. This is a mere GCSE-level maths and logic exercise used to investigate a business proposal. If I said to you, "I bought five apples and now I have three. No one else has touched the bag they came in, nor any of the apples themselves. I don't want to disclose how many I've eaten to you," and you replied, "ok, I'll tell you. You've eaten two," you certainly haven't engaged in any form of manipulation to yield the correct answer. There's absolutely no need to invoke the folk-psychological spectre of 'manipulation' to point out that it was a clever move on Peter's part.

    Counselling doesn’t necessarily mean therapy. I interpreted it as Peter meaning more business counselling, i.e inquiring as to whether the guy had any business know-how and just came in for someone to guide him, or if he wants a financial investment. Makes perfect sense - the guy was going on about how the corporate world wasn’t for him so Peter was clarifying if he had come for money or guidance. Don’t think Peter was questioning his sanity or being unempathetic to his situation.

    The Bastard Gift Hi Mr Gift - I do, although no longer work hard at it. The problem, as with so many things, is nobody wants to pay any more for anything than they absolutely need to. So people sourcing promotional products want cheap. Unfortunately, I designed Plinth for performance, which means I use expensive processes and materials. I also insist on UK manufacture, for ethical and environmental reasons. Thanks for the comment. 🙏🏻

    Well hello Mr. Plinth. Surprising but certainly thank you for responding. In retrospect of the promotional gifts I have received at work and taking in consideration your words, I whole heartily understand your point.I also take into account the Dragon's words of your product being so well made. That unto itself was a collection of a great review. People really don't want to pay for more than what they need, and as in my case, an author of short horror stories, I offer some of my books free to generate sales. That certainly can't work with every business model. You sharpened me to write my comments in layers rather than my first reaction. Thank you.

    I mean you can kind of understand since the market is heavily over-saturated with gadget stands and a lot of covers nowadays come with stands so already you're left with a smaller market. Also the fact that he admitted he was struggling to sell them wasn't very convincing. But they definitely got it wrong with this one, Plinth is actually selling pretty well from the looks of it. Appearing on Dragon's Den definitely helped it quite a bit.

    People are angry about Peter's counselling comment, but I'm pretty sure he was talking about business advice in relation to the "struggling to find a market" bit... you don't really tell potential investors that you don't actually know what your market is and expect them to be happy about that. This idea is great for him, but no good for anyone else. Sure it does everything what he wants it to do, but most people aren't that desperate for the same needs that they'll go out looking for this. The biggest flaw for me is that this product needs to have the iPad out of its case to work properly, most people have cases on their iPads and most cases have some sort of stands built in.
