Is Peter Jones Too Old To Play Games? | Dragons' Den

Ойын-сауық

Surrey-based inventor, Jack Hanauer, is hoping his invention 'Trix' could become a family favourite board game. Jack is offering to hand over 20% of his word game business in return for £50,000 investment from the Dragons. Deborah Meaden may be on a winning streak whilst playing Trix, but it seems Peter Jones is not here to play any games.
An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

I had a friend many years ago who invented a brilliant game, a little like a tremendously popular Trivia game that was on the market. It truly was an excellent game and he sold hundreds at flea markets and anywhere else that operated in a similar manner, but, of course, not making much net profit. Naturally we all told him he needed a distributor and was crazy doing it the way he was.....AND we said, "Get a good lawyer first." He did not get a good lawyer because he said "Why would I need one, I'm an intelligent person. I can look after myself." He did approach a MAJOR manufacturer and distributor of games. They told him they loved it and that if it were introduced properly and distributed properly it would sell millions and because of that they would like to give him an initial cheque for (today's equivalent) $75,000.00 and ( again, in today's terms) approx $3.00 for every game sold. He signed, giving them exclusive world wide distribution rights. In return they handed him the cheque which he immediately ran to his bank and cashed. He then phoned us all and told us what a brilliant deal he had made. Subsequently he later found they simply locked the game in a safe and threw way the key....because they didn't want anything competing with their already highly successful game. They had, effectively, prevented a game which could have really hurt their sales from ever reaching the market. This was an inexpensive way of shutting him out. He tried to buy the rights back from them....they refused.

I call bullshit. If this story is true, and I highly doubt it is, they had exclusive rights to the game which means they get the lion share of the money while they pay him a royalty for each game sold. What your saying is that the company essentially turned down millions of dollars because they already had successful products? That doesn't make any sense whatsoever. No company would ever turn down making millions of dollars. Even if it did hurt the sales of the other product, they would still be reeling in millions from the product your friend signed over to them. And if they didn't think the game would sell well then they wouldn't have any need to sign a deal with him and just tell him to get out. Your story has some big holes.

This has been done before but far better. The game "codewords" involves two players and a grid of tiles. Some tiles score team 1 a point and some score team 2 a point. They have words on them and the reader for each team takes their turn to come up with a clue for the words that score their team a point. Much more fun and competitive

Oooh, what about the guy who wanted to have beach bars with all the furniture made from sand, etc. That one was hilarious. 😁😁😁

Actually, it's really really not. Dunning-Kruger is when a person is so out of their depth, they fail to see how miserably bad they are at something and think they're actually good at it. This person is just being extremely defensive of his "invention". Several times during the pitch he admits he doesn't understand business and that he has a lot to learn. He just won't listen to criticism because of his pride. Dunning-Kruger would be if he tried to teach Deborah about marketing or tell Touker that he understands retail better than him. It is the illusion of being good at something, which isn't found here.

If there are three things that are sure in Dragon's Den it is: 1. Deborah saying "Excellent!" after a deal 2. Also Deborah asking for a Trademark 3. Delusional people saying "I've got a great product"
