I've only seen them live once, at a Christmas tour show in 2019. They did the same thing then, only it was with "Hallelujah". Like you said, you could have heard a pin drop in the sold-out auditorium - I think most of us were even holding our breath. The most beautiful and special moment I have ever experienced at a concert.

It's surprisingly soft and it shows how much control they all have because if even one of them belts, the others would be drowned out. It's also impressive because (again) it doesn't feel like a capella but it is litterally 5 people singing in harmony with no backing instruments.

I adore Avi in this. I think because it's 5 part harmony and Avi is singing lyrics not just a baseline. Most say the song is written by Avi and Kevin. The bio credits PTX as a whole as composers. Beautiful song, love your reactions. 😎

The reason why the bio says PTX as composers is that they give credit to all the members on original songs. Kevin and Avi were the writers of this. Kevin had written the 1st verse and had an idea for the melody. Avi wrote the 2nd verse and together they finished out the song. It was in one of their interviews that they talked about it. To hear this live, here is the link for I think is the best video and audio they have. It was recorded in Vienna. kzread.info/dash/bejne/hX5-tI-Jnqi7hMo.html

This song definitely has an Avi core running through it. You can hear snippets of what he'd write later for his own solo work, and you can sense the composition, theory and arranging training he had in college while he was majoring in opera and classical music. Ben Bram assisted in the final arrangement.

@@alankadair they used to give credit to the whole group on their originals on Ptx volumes 1-3 but ever since they released their full original album self titled Pentatonix they’ve been crediting only the members involved in writing each specific song. It’s in their cd liners. Ptx as a whole group still is given credit for the arrangements of each song though. Along with Ben Bram of course.

My favorite song of theirs, perhaps my favorite song ever. The dissonant harmonies are just gorgeous. I've heard a rumor (but have not seen it confirmed anywhere), that they actually learned to lip sync the chorus backwards and that's how they got the effect of the petals floating upwards. Another powerful thing with this song: at the end of many of their concerts, they turn off their in ears and all surround a single mic to sing the song. At one particular show, the Westboro Baptist Church was protesting outside their concert because they're homophobic and Scott and Mitch are gay. There's a video where you can hear the protestors outside, and the 5 of them huddle around a single mic and sing this song and drown out the protestors with their voices. It's truly stunning.

Travis, you beat me to it. I was going to suggest this song to you. So nice to hear PTX singing a more mellow ballad. Another ballad that you will love is “Light in the Hallway”. I believe that Avi takes the lead and his voice is fantastic. Also, “Light in the Hallway” was the closing song featured in the TV series, “Bones”, season 11, episode 16, “The Strike in the Chord”. You need to watch this particular episode because it features Scott, Kirsten and Mitch acting. They were members of different a cappella groups in the show. You are in for a treat! It is my understanding that Avi and Kevin did a lot of the writing and arranging of it, although they all probably played some part in it. One interesting note - During the chorus, when the flakes are going up, they learned to mouth the words backwards and then played the video backwards and sang over it. There are only 4 words in the chorus "I'll run, run to you", so it wasn't too hard, but it's an amazing effect. I also love how the very last humming note is like a question - it never resolves.

I’m glad you loved it. I’ve been a pentaholic for years but seeing them through your eyes makes me feel like I’ve rediscovered them. When you get to Christmas songs look for Mary did you know and thank you. They’re my favorite. Love your reactions. You’re my favorite pentatonic reactor

Another original you should check out is Light in the Hallway written by Scott. Avi takes lead vocals and the harmonies are stunning. One of my favorites. Love your reactions...keep 'em coming!

It was written by Kevin and Avi. When they filmed the video that had to learn to sing some of the words backwards, so they could film the petals falling down and then rewind the recording and it looks like they are singing but the petals are flying upwards! Dedicated!

YOU ARE A LIFE SAVER!! This was my favorite song the year after it came out!! I had completely forgotten (had a baby at the end of 2014) and thanks to this I was able to add it back to my regular writing playlist. Thanks so much!! ((great reaction too lol!)) I am always, always drawn to Mitch's voice in this song. Honestly even though it's the main melodic line it's just so haunting, characteristically Mitch, so beautiful. The altered 'I'll run' line right after 'set me free' may be one of my favorite musical moments of all time, really. I love them. OH OH I wanted to tell you. Now that you've listened to them so much and pick out the lines separately so well, go back and listen to Hallelujah and listen to Avi's bass line right around Mitch's solo. He does the same line the verse before but not as obviously, it's so musically clever, you gotta listen for it, you'll be so delighted! I even want to say do another reaction to one of the EARLIEST songs you did of PTX with either your thoughts on having heard it so often if you have, or thoughts on listening to it again after having heard so much stuff in the interim! Love ya man, thanks for all your reactions!

That's the one I told you about in an early reaction. There's a live version where they were open air. You could hear people outside the Stadion hear chanting hate-patrols and they sung over it. Beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. - different topic. My bestie is contacting you on IG about your dental surg. in turkey. You were so generous to offer that opportunity recently.

They actually put sheet music out so choirs could sing it! So cool! The same with their original called White Winter Hymnal! Another great one to check out. It is considered a Christmas song I guess so you may want to wait until winter, at least. I'd love to hear your reaction to it anytime! If you look out on KZread after you react to it, you will see many groups performing it. Would love to see your take on it! White Winter Hymnal has got my vote! Thank you for your reactions! Love the Halloween shirts!

As I recall, it was written primarily by Kevin and Avi, from the PTX II EP. Officially credited tp Pentatonix and Ben Bram. Obviously, everyone contributed, but I remember hearing that Kevin started writing, got kind of stuck and Avi pitched in. I'm not 100% on that, but that's what my memory is telling me. Damn. The song makes me cry every time I hear it.

To me, this was a PTX masterpiece. It didn't have their usual percussion and effects. The song just utilized their amazing vocal prowess and showed why they are the best at what they do. Incredible!!!!
