In concert I have seen them place the mikes on the floor and sing this song totally without electronics. You would never think that this would work in any concert all but it's amazing. Yes, the part I love when Kirsty and Kevin are singing against the other 3. Wow.

In their cover of Say Something, Avi, Mitch and Scott are together a lot. Sublime

Morning, Carmen, they remarked in an interview that this original song as inspired early on (actually during the Sing Off) after hearing (and obsessing over) "My Heart With You". I love KO's beat boxing and cello but it's really something special when he leaves those behind to sing. PTX has made me anticipate the Christmas season the way I haven't since I was a child. Have a great day!

Very recently they have started performing a cover of My Heart With You -- in the same no mics format. 🙂

Wonderful reaction, as usual. If you were wondering about the rising snow flakes - There are just 4 words in the chorus, "I'll run to you". They learned how to mouth those words backwards, recorded themselves doing that, played that video backwards and sang over the chorus. It's a really interesting effect, and so creative.

If you search on KZread, there are so many choir/acapella groups covering this song, it has become a classic.

Pentatonix's genius sound editor, Ed Boyer, has talked about creating a specific "location" for each voice, so, especially if you use headphones, it makes it easier to hear the individual voices.

I love their five part harmonies too, it’s simply beautiful. And I like your first comment “Avi🥰” and that you are a sucker for low harmonies. Hopefully you’ll find the time to react to more of Avi’s own music, for instance “It knows me” and “Otherside”.

Knew you'd love it... Super like your "ball of warmth" analogy 😊 I think there is some subtle emphasis in mixing to go with the video. Agree difficult to breath at points listening to this, still for me after dozensa of listens. Something you may have missed/not realised... The chorus was 'filmed backwards' to get the flakes floating upwards, so they had to learn/mime the singing backwards too.

I definitely saw the flakes going up, but I didn’t register that they have had to sing the lyrics in reverse too, to achieve that 😧 That is amazing!

Love the song is one of my favorite original songs, and the simplicity of the video help just concentrate in theirs voices, and the five harmonies, me too love the harmonies between Scott, Mitchand AVi and the back ground the voices of Kirstin and Kevin, When they sing this song life and My heart with you they just put one mick in the middle in the floor and they sing in circle, is great to hearing them without anything just their voices.

ALSO, note that they had to learn to lip-sync BACKWARDS for some of this to make the snow fall UPWARDS!!

The bridge is what makes this song for me. Starting in 5-part like the rest of the song, but then splitting into 3 and 2 as you mentioned, with the K's taking the high harmony, that split is just beautiful. It's also a song where Kirstie doesn't go high very much, mostly staying in her lower register, but when she does, it's...chef's kiss! On seeing a face and hearing that voice - the same thing happens to me, and I've heard other reactors make the same comment. I've seen some people who think that the mix was created to make that happen, but I tend to think that's probably not the case. The mix is almost always final well before any video is finished, and the final edit of a video might change who was on camera at a specific time - which means the mix would then have to be changed to match the video. Since PTX is usually all about the music, I tend to think the mix comes first, and the video comes second. There is almost certainly a psychological component involved in seeing/hearing someone's face/voice, as even when I'm watching a non-PTX video (say Home Free or VoicePlay) the same thing happens, and I doubt that all of them would go through that same process. There's one shot in VP's Moana medley where Eli is lip-synching the bass part because Geoff is singing lead, and has even fooled people into thinking he's singing it - but the group has said that Geoff is being double-tracked then, and Eli is doing just that - lip-synching, but not singing the bass part like it appears. But watching the video, I sure seem to hear Eli singing that bass part!

A good follow up for this song would be "Happy Now." "Run to You" is about attempting to recover a failed romance, and "Happy Now" is about recovering your own happiness after a romance ends, for whatever reason. It's also a song where Pentatonix deliberately used lighting and color along with the music to tell the story.

Whether the camera is focused on the person singing distinctly a little louder at that moment, or the videographers/sound engineers made the sound louder to match the video, I don't know, but I definitely hear the person singing when the camera is on them. Either way, it is brilliant. When it came out, PTX offered the sheet music on their web page. My daughter's chamber choir sang it in their spring concert. I remember thinking it was so beautiful, but I had no idea who they were then. I assumed it was a classical composer, and I laugh about that now.

This original song was inspired by My Heart with You which they remade a few years ago. This came from the genius level PTX Volume II EP. This EP also had Daft Punk. When I saw the title on the EP before I listened to it I thought it was a remake of the Whitney Houston or Bryan Adams song. Was still far from disappointed. They were so good from the very beginning. Fun Fact....They learned to lip synch backwards so the falling snow could fall up.

You'll hear Pentatonix refer to this and their similar arrangements as "homophonic". That means that they are mostly singing the same words and rhythms together, forming chords (as opposed to polyphonic, where everyone is singing different musical phrases that are weaving together.) This was an early original song, from their 2013 PTX Vol2 album. When they perform the homophonic songs live, they usually put down their individual mics, ask the audience for quiet, and stand facing each other around a light. Other homophonic songs I don't think you've reacted to include a cover of Elvis' "Can't Help Falling in Love", and a cover of the song that inspired this arrangement /style, The Rescues' "My Heart With You".

Lovely reaction, as always. This is a master class in how to sing harmonies, especially low ones. I'm pretty sure the mixer (Ed Boyer, I believe) has done the same technique with this song as he did with I Can't Help Falling In Love With You. It has the same subtle highlighting of a singer's voice when the singer is shown in the video. The videos are both somewhat similar as well. All of them sitting on stools and against a totally black background and the videographer moves around or between the singers.

I have a standard challlenge of listening, look at the discography of PTX, pick a song you truely love the original, and a song that you do not think anyone could make it worth listening to. After hearing PTX's versions you will love them even more than ever. PTX does not do covers, they do UPgrades. After you love those 2 pieces, pick on of their originals, to see what pure acapella can be. The originals go beyond belief and make the use of all 5 talents to the maximum level. And a personal favorite from very early in the PtX catalog, I recommend Water. Heavy Kirsten vocals but so southing and meaningful.
