    Been occasionally repairing my Penn reels for decades, but I always forget the trick to holding the mechanism all together and inserting the dog and spring without it all falling apart on the desk in front of me. Thank you for helping me through this. Also, I lost each of those three springs at one time or another during this repair. 🤣

    Good Afternoon Dennis First, I love your videos - Today is my 60th birthday and my interest in fishing had waned the last few years to the point I sold my offshore fishing boat and all my fishing gear - I really thought my lifetime of fish was over. Then one day at a garage sale I saw a Diawa RS1600 ( I had it as a kid in the '70's - I think - LOL ) in a bucket along with some other old reels and old rods at $15 I could not pass them up. I may be strange but now I only want to fish with old gear from my childhood or the gear I remember my dad or grandad used. These old reels need a lot of new love so that's what I'm giving them with the knowledge that I've learned from you - you have restored my love of fishing. Catching fish with rod and reel I can still hear my father tell me to "keep my rod tip up" and "Reel ! Reel ! " and "What a great Fish !" -- so Thanks Big Time for that !! I do have a question about my Penn 350 the level wind bar does not seem to have any strength - when reeling with the line under pressure it seems to skip or stop - the gear at the right of the bar seems fine.. what do you think the problem is ? or is this why the mechanism was not adopted in place of the other level wind mechanisms..? Thanks Chris Bush Houston, Tx

    Happy Birthday! I think you may have a worn Spiral dog drive. That is what holds the torsion bar and advances it. It is located on the non-gear side of the reel under the chrome trim ring. I love the 350 in design, but also because it was the first new reel my dad bought for me in the early 60's. I beat it up pretty badly, but it just kept working - Enjoy you special day - Dennis

    As a new Penn owner I love the design of them. It's hard nowadays to get a reel with all metal parts. I would really love to add this one to my collection. Also is there supposed to be some play in the handle on the Penn Senator 144h 6/0? The handle pushes in and out just a bit.

  • @2ndChanceTackle

    @2ndChanceTackle

    A bit is OK. In and out movement is a worn bridge or gear sleeve. When it moves to the point of a ring or starts trapping the anti-reverse dog, it is time to replace both. New reels do not have play, but some is expected over time due to wear - Thanks for asking - Dennis

    Hi Dennis, just bought a 350 that cleaned up beautifully. Found your video, so great! KZread is amazing. My spiral bar spins freely for 3/4 of the revolution and then really is hard to spin the rest of the way. I can loosen the non handle side bearing and it works freely but that doesn't seem right. Any idea on what it might be? Have not taken it apart yet.

I just bought a 350 from a sale and while it has some surface corrosion it seems to work well except that the free spool lever sticks half way and will not release the spool. Another query Dennis. I followed your disassembly instructions on the video and removed the winding handle and drag adjuster and all the outer screws but the spool does not separate from the winding side plate. The opposite plate does. The reel looks pretty neglected inside. Is the spindle just stuck? I have left it soaking in CRC.

    What types of fishing besides charter boat would this reel be used for? I'm cleaning and lubing one of my dads and I really want to use it after its done. I've seen a video on shark fishing with one. What other uses can you think of? You can use this in deep water or for heavier fish, so you can fish deep lakes. You can use this for big catfish or snagging spoonbill. It will work well on the great lates and ocean for both piers and boats. If it is tunes really well, you could shore cast it, but that is not the ideal one for that. Thanks for asking - Dennis

    Would at be the gear on the twist levelline bar that is causing the skip or stop turning or would it be all of the mechanism that moves the twist levelline bar ? Does it all need to be replace to keep it from hesitating and or stopping turning on it's on?

  • @2ndChanceTackle

    If the gear on the bar is missing teeth or just missing, that would cause it. If not, it would be the point on the advance mechanism in the non-gear side plate

    Hey Dennis, i am about to break into my late Dads 350. The leveline bar will rotate forward when i turn it manually by hand. It will not turn backwards. When the crank handle is engaged, it does not turn the bar. I’ve turned on and off the clicker and i’ve tried it disengaged and engaged and still nothing. Any ideas before i break it down? Is this fixable? I want to fish with it at least once and can manually thumb the line to if needed but would rather get it working properly if possible. Also, for a charter boat in Destin, what sized line would u recommend for it?

  • @2ndChanceTackle

    @2ndChanceTackle

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes - there is a second ratchet on the non-gear side of the reel that drives that bar. It should only turn in one direction. You need to make sure it is seated properly in the non-gear side plate in order for it to work as designed. Dennis

    I don't understand how the free spool is supposed to work. The pinion seems to always be connected to the main gear on the bridge regardless of whether the jack is being moved forward or back by the free spool lever. It isn't able to move away from the main gear as long as it's in the pinion yoke. So how do you ever disconnect the spool from the main gear?

  • @2ndChanceTackle

    @2ndChanceTackle

    3 жыл бұрын

    Eric - the Jack pulls the pinion gear away from the shoulder on the spool shaft. That allows the spool to turn without turning either the main gear or the pinion gear. When you re-set the free spool to on, the springs push the pinion gear forward to engage the shoulder on the spool. Once that is engaged, the main gear will turn the pinion gear, which will turn the spool - Dennis

    That is not normal. That torsion bar should distribute the line evenly. When you spin the bar annually, are you hearing the click click? If not, the gear that drives it or the dog mechanism may be stuck and not turning the bar - Dennis
