Penn Senator 9/0 fishing reel complete take apart and service

Спорт

This video shows how to take apart the Penn Senator 9/0 deep sea fishing reel and do the servicing of the reel. It stops short of final assembly due to length. All that is needed for completion is to re-install the stag drag, handle and side plate screws. I have been servicing fishing reels for over 20 years and am sharing my experience here. Hi Dennis, great videos, easy to watch and very instructional. I picked up an older Penn Jig-master 500 with an orange Bakelite handle and the peg that holds the handle is bent slightly out of square. Can this just be bent back or do I need to buy a new handle? Have you done a video on this? Thank you sir!

Thanks for the kine words. If the peg is bent, you will have a hard time bringing this back to square without loosening the rivet that hols the pin on. The solution is a replacement. You can usually find the bakelite handles on Ebay for around $10. You can get the new rubber know handles through Mysticparts.com, which is the former Pennparts.com. - Dennis

2nd Chance Tackle thank you for the info, that was what I thought. I took the reel apart, cleaned and greased it based on your videos, now it just needs a new handle and it’s back in business. Thanks again and have a great day!

Hi Dennis, great informational video as always. I have a question: how do you remove a screw that's is stuck to the frame posts? I've taken all the screws off expect this one and it won't budge. If the screw turns so does the post and of the post doesn't move neither does the screw. Someone suggested heat and sticking it in the oven or something but I'm not too sure about that. Thanks.

Stay away from the oven! That will damage the side plates. I suggest the following: Spray both the outer and inner screw with a penetrating oil, like WD40. Do it several times over an hour or two. Give it time to work. Next, get a kitchen scrubby pad, like Scotch Brite or the dollar store variety. This will stop the pliers from scaring the metal post. These are the green pads about 1/4 inch thick that are like a fabric steel wool. Cut off a 2 inch by 2 inch square strip and wrap the pad around the post. Grab the pad with a pliers and hold tight. I prefer a small channel lock pliers. Hold the screw with the screwdriver and turn the post counterclockwise, with the pliers. That should free it. If not, you may need to snap the post off and replace it. Replacement posts are available from Mysticparts.com. This is the former Pennparts.com website. You can get a replacement post and screw for the Penn reels there. To snap the post off, grab the far end of the post and move it up and down in short swings until the screw breaks off. Good luck - Dennis

Hey Dennis Another great video. I just went through my reel but I found 7 ht 100 type washer to 5 metal washers. The ht 100 type washers were doubled up at the bottom and top of the stack. Do you know anything about this type of setup? Thanks

The reels initially came with thicker asbestos type washers. The stack you have is a conversion from the old ones to the new HT-100 as the older style thick washers are no longer available. If you have two doubled up on the bottom, that is to increase the height of the stack and should not affect how the others work. Thanks for asking - Dennis

Are you sure the fiber washers in the drag have to be greased?

Hi Dennis, just bought my first senator 9/0, used from eBay. I’d like to replace the handle it currently has. Can you point me in the right direction of what wrench I need? Thank you!

The Penn wrench that fits the high speed 4/0 Senator and 6/0 Senator will work on your 9/0. If you do not have the original wrench, you can buy a replacement from Mysticparts.com or I'm sure Ebay probably has them. They are not that expensive and good to have for tuning up the reel - Dennis
