They certainly are beautiful reels. I wonder what stories they could tell if it was only possible for them to tell us all the battles - the times they won and the times they lost. I wish I could have been there. I love your “who done it?” Videos.

I got a few of those old Penn reels that never seen water. I bought them in a garage sale brand new with the original box. Is amazing how timeless and reliable those Penn reels have become. I used a few of the ones my father gave me and still hold up great.

Yes they are. Your reels sound like treasures. I always wonder if reels could talk.... What would the story behind the unused reels be?

A leaf spring can be made from the lid off a can of King Oscar's kippered herring. That was a bush fix (literally). Lost a bit of skin from my fingers on that one

@@2ndChanceTackle you are very welcome Dennis. I shared this video with my little brother in Florida. He has 3-6/0's, a 12/0 and a few others
Try saving old windshield wipers. They're stainless and make the anti-reverse spring sound like a gatlin gun. LOL

Penn makes the Torque series in the US as well. They're the high end lever drags. $500+. Great reels though.
I really like the way you teach and have enjoyed watching your work. I have a 114 H and will tune it up. I have a shakespeare 2470 and the anti reverse does not work. I think it is the anti reverse spring and dog. Do you know where I can buy those parts? Mitch in New Orleans.

Those reels have been out of production for a very long time. Check eBay and other used sites for a donor reel in order to get the parts. You may get luck and find that the parts are inside your reel and that they are just frozen in grease or some other reason why the A/R is stuck. Check the reel first - Dennis
Dennis, I’ve got a modern 6/0 where the handle wobbles. I think I may be missing drag washers from the drag washer stack. Does that sound right?
@2ndChanceTackle
Жыл бұрын
There are several causes, but drag washers missing is low on the list. You problem is either a handle that is not tightened down all the way, a work gear sleeve where the top hold has rounded out or a worn bridge post or pin that hold the sleeve to the post. Finally, the top of the bridge post may have seized and broken off of the shaft. That is the worst case scenario. Best wishes - Dennis
I have a 14/0 the spool has a side to side movement can I put some kind of spacer to take up the play? thank you.
@2ndChanceTackle
Жыл бұрын
hmmm - you may have a broken bearing. If you want to try a spacer, you will need to put it on the non gear side of the spool. There should be a slight side to side movement of the spool, but if it is excessive, it may be worth a try. Dennis
Hi Dennis! I have two Penn 6/0 reels. The anti-reverse clicker on one is much quieter than on the other. Do you think I need to replace the spring? Thanks in advance!
@2ndChanceTackle
Жыл бұрын
No - there is a large variation in the click of the A/R. Not to worry unless it fails. Sometimes it is the actual dog that is wearing down and not the spring that causes the different sounds. Thanks for asking - Dennis

When did Penn stop using the flat springs in the senator's?
@2ndChanceTackle
5 ай бұрын
They haven't stopped on many of the Senator 6/0 and higher versions which still use the flat spring. The others4/0 and below were changed as model designs were improved. That mostly occurred in the 70s and 80s

Is mineral spirits ok to use as a penetrating cleaner
@2ndChanceTackle
Жыл бұрын
It is a solvent. I do not use it and would be cautious on how it may affect the finish on the reels and some internal parts like rubber pieces. I'd stay away from it without testing it on some old reels. I also don't like the smell of it. You may want to use that outdoors if you do try it - Dennis
