My father in law let me take his 12/0 senator home and clean it. He's had it in his garage since the 1970s. This was the first Senator that I ever took apart. I had watched a previous video you did on a Mariner and was able to clean every piece and polish the chrome and reinstall all the components back together. I showed it to him a few days later and it stirred many memories for him. He is dealing with Alzheimer's disease but he never has forgotten the days that he fished. Thanks Dennis your videos make a difference.

Love this video Dennis! I just serviced a 9/0 and posted a video for an old friend of mine not long ago. Workhorse machines for sure. Also did two 4/0 Specials for him as well. I hope you are well and staying safe Sir! Tony

Hi Dennis, You can probably see my smile from here.?!! What a cool Tuna Beast. I think you're going to need a bigger workbench after this reel effort !! Nice to see the inner workings were in such good condition and straightforward to work on. Cudos, even if you didn't use the "B" and Flitz, this time ! A guy can still hope !!! Best Wishes, C

Great video. Been using a Penn 12/0 on a Electramate 1412 electric drive for years and have caught many daytime swordfish, groupers and snappers with it. They take a licking and keep on reeling.

Yes it does, but he design is the same internally. Just imagine the size of the 16/0! It holds 1000 yards of 130 pound mono! Best wishes - Dennis

Thanks Brad. The Daiwa Sealine 900 Rock Cod Special is closer to the Penn 6/0, but both are completely bulletproof designs that will last for ever. - Dennis

Wow you could use that thing as a dumbbell replacement. I'm surprised that reel still gets use. Especially with the affordable modern reels and braid options available.

Video killed the radio star and braid has done in these big old reels as well. I don't see that many 3/0 and 4/0 Senators any longer as well. The Avet type small frame lever drags with braid have slayed the dragon - Dennis

I have a 10/0 that I got from my dad in 1990, I’m trying to figure out exactly how old it is. Is there a way to determine age? It’s on a Star Rods delux 121 r. I’ve been using this combo for over 30 years and it is still going strong.

When I turn to make sure anti reserves is working it does but then I screw on the wheel to adjust drag it screws on and feels like it rubbing the metal and it doesn’t make a clicking noise like yours and when I reel it the spool moves a little what did I do wrong?

You need to go back and make sure the A/R clicker and spring are set correctly. It seems line the dog is in the right position but that the spring is not working or is not installed right - I would check that first - Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle the weird thing is when I take out the piece that protects the gear with the drag inside and screw on the drag wheel it work just fine but when I put that piece that hides the gear from the outside in it sounds like metal grinding and doesn’t work.

Hi there , I have a 10/0 Senator and it has a small amount of sideways play on the spool . Is this normal ? Kind regards Paul

  • @2ndChanceTackle

yes, there should be some side to side play. If it is excessive, you can try adding a small shim washer to the non-gear side of the spool shaft.
