    Excellent information. I have four jigmasters, two from 1977, that are still going strong

    Hello Denise question, when you service rental reels whats the most amount of repairs will a captain do before it's claimed a loss? Great video again, thanks

    Hi Gary. This is a good question and it applies to all reels I do, not just the charter boat. I get a flat fee per reel to open and repair the reel. The parts are the difference maker. The captain and I agree that if the parts cost is more than half the cost of a new reel then it is exiled to the parts bin. I use those reels when other parts are needed for his remaining reels. I tell customers the same. If the parts and my labor exceed half the cost of the reel, then I recommend not doing the repair. Of course, the decision is theirs and many times we go ahead and do it. Regarding a Jigmaster, if you need to replace the bridge and gear sleeve, a spool, or a frame then it is getting expensive versus just buying one new. I hope that helps - Dennis

    Very informative video thanks a mil..I currently serviced a jigmaster and have a problem during casting I get a loud humming sound but it doesn't hamper the spinning of the spool. Also if i spin the spool by hand it's very quiet. It's only during casting that it makes a noise .Any idea what it could be ?

    Generally the condition you are describing is attributed to win side plate bearings or gears. If you are in free spool when casting, you can eliminate the gearing as they do not turn in free spool. Make sure you have grease in both bearings and try it after repacking it

    @@2ndChanceTackle I don't see any bearings it's just the side spool adjuster with a spring..also I put oil in instead of grease Will try try that much appreciated for your help..

    Wow - my sentimental favorite with the torsion bar level wind feature. It is the first reel I learned to fish on in the early 1960's! Nice innovative design. Good starter reel that was bulletproof. Looking back, the reel had a low gear ratio and tiny drags, but what did I know? Caught a lot of fish and I still have one....but not the one I started with. That got lost somewhere along the line. Thanks for asking

    Hey.....i know penn reels are good..for fishing.... But ..are the conventional old reels better than the new ones??

  • @2ndChanceTackle

    Hi Rey - There is no definitive answer - It's like asking if a baseball team from the 1960's is better than a team from today. Two different games. With fishing reels, it's Two different technologies. It's all a matter of preference and emotion. The earlier reels were durable, caught lots of fish and would last forever. The newer reels are lighter weight, smoother operators, will catch a lot of fish and last a long time. Preference is really your choice - Dennis

  • @2ndChanceTackle

    @2ndChanceTackle

    2 жыл бұрын

    You cannot make the conversion if you do not have the narrow spool that was made specifically for the 501. If you have that spool, most of the other frame parts come from the Mariner 49. You would use them to replace the cross posts and reel seat to complete the conversion with the side plates and rings coming from the Jigmaster 500 - Dennis

    Sounds like the drag washers are broken if it is not reeling in line. The other problem could be broken line inside the reel - I would check those first

    The JigMaster is a multipurpose reel that is good for bottom fishing as well has high speed jigging. On the east coast, the charter boats are using these for stripped bass and bluefish jigging as well as drop fishing for Tautog, Porgy and summer flounder-Fluke. They are durable and easily serviced with good parts availability so the captains choose the reel for versatility, rather than maintaining separate set-ups to fish for individual species. - Thanks for asking - Dennis
