You can get a cheap, all you can eat meal at the Cannon Center, which is the dorm cafeteria. But it is pretty nice, and my kids all loved going there while their older sister was in Helaman Halls.

There are 3 BYUs: in Provo, Idaho, and Hawaii. The one in Hawaii is definitely VERY diverse and students come from all over the world! Just in my small hallway of 4 dorm rooms we had students from Tonga, Hong Kong, Mongolia, New Zealand, Taiwan, and Australia! Not to mention the other students I met from Sri Lanka, Samoa, the Philippines, and MANY other countries! You should take a trip to Hawaii sometime and tour that campus! It’s gorgeous, unique, and has an amazing purpose in serving others around the world. In fact, it would be a wonderful experience for you to tour other LDS church services in other parts of the world and learn about the church and culture in other parts of the world!

Even as a member of the church, returned missionary, and Utahn all my life. I was in absolute shock at my first BYU sporting event when they offered a public prayer over the speakers before the game. Just goes to show that even within the Utah culture there is always something else you’ll learn.

We are horrible at explaining our beliefs and onlookers get confused. I agree we need to do better at explaining that 1) We lived in Heaven before we were born 2) Christ loves all his people but doesn't want to force them to follow him otherwise they wouldn't be strong joint-heirs (that last word is used in the new testament) 3) Christ is preparing the world for the second coming in a way that is sustainable spiritually by bringing back the original church he established while on the earth with all the powers it will need to gather Israel 4) Christ in his great mercy, saves all in the end except those who are determined to not follow him after being sealed/election made sure/in his presence/truly born again by fire (that's how we determine someone is denying the Holy Spirit, the unpardonable sin in the Bible). However some people go through needless suffering of their own choosing or not (truth is withheld from them), do not get baptised in life which holds back progression after they die until someone gets baptised on their behalf (we believe in baptism on behalf of the dead), and it's just not right to hold back all the knowledge and blessings and advantages like ministering of angels they could have in this life and progression that could bring them back into God's presence. 5) Joseph Smith is spoken of a lot because he is relatable (looking for truth), helps establish why we have the authority to do any of this (given to him by the original apostles), and because he represents the blessings of the original Joseph of Egypt being realized and spread to the world. But even he said that the church is about Christ his death his resurrection, and what it means for us--anything else is just an attachment 6) Latter-day saints strive for exaltation, not just salvation, and sometimes that gets confusing. It means being joint-heirs, and all of our wrongs being made up, not just going to heaven. Hope that makes sense. @@indiakant4796

Great tour. Keep in mind regarding BYU, that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has always advocated higher education for everyone, men and women. There are BYU campuses in Idaho and Hawaii, Church Colleges in New Zealand and other Pacific Islands. Not to mention BYU Pathways, an accredited church subsidized higher education, mostly online program where a Bachelors degree can be achieved in 3 years for under $10 K. It's available to saints and non-saints alike, all over the world. I can't even guess how many students are currently enrolled because it has grown so much over the last several years. As with ALL BYU campus education, a religion class is a required part of the curriculum. Education promotes wisdom and helps us be better sons and daughters of God. And be sure and learn about the church sponsored Perpetual Education Fund. It's an incredible and inspired program to help educate and lift people out of the cycle of poverty that exists around the world. I could go on.... but the bottom line is that God wants us to continue in learning our whole life, especially learning about Him. BTW, great video. Love meeting your bride!

It was an incredible experience, and I truly appreciated his expertise and dedication to making it a personal journey rather than just a touristy one. He didn't spend time sharing weepy personal stories but instead focused on creating an environment for personal spiritual experiences. Trevan provided fascinating historical background and context, which I absolutely loved. I could talk for hours about all the amazing things he shared. He meticulously planned everything, ensuring that we never had to wait in long lines for anything. It is a great place to live and raise a family. We both were born in Utah, but lived 10 years in Michigan (did graduate work at the University of Michigan) and worked there, then moved "back west" to Cheyenne Wyoming and lived there almost 20 years, and then moved back to Utah and have been in Utah 20 years.

It’s nice to see a fellow Ute in the comments! I thought Joy’s comment about no coffee shops on campus was funny. At the U, there are multiple, including a Starbucks in the Campus Store. I graduated from the U in 2021, and although it was originally my dream to go to BYU, I didn’t get in (even if you have good grades, it’s hard to get into that school if you are from Utah, they really prioritize the students who didn’t grow up in the “Utah bubble”). However, the Lord placed me where I needed to be, even though I didn’t see it at the time. Going to the U really strengthened my faith-it was the first time in my life I was in a predominantly non-LDS environment, and also the first time I encountered antis face to face (there are A LOT of antis at the U these days). It was definitely interesting, intense, and faith-building. And even though I’d never go back and would much rather get a graduate degree from a faith-based university like the Y or Liberty, I can’t deny that going to the U really helped shape me into who the Lord wants me to be. Anyway, hope you don’t mind my ranting reply, lol.

Glad you enjoyed the tour, but you really need to attend a Devotional on Tuesday at 11:00 and a home football game to get the whole richness of the BYU experience. Though the Church certainly does invest in BYU facilities, it was my impression that also a large part of the campus art and additional programs are funded by alumni donations. We went to BYU Provo in 98 and for example I recall several of the data center super computers of the time were named for people in honor of such large donations by alumni. It is a pretty campus, and reminds me of some state schools I’ve been to as well. Thanks for sharing.

You can experience a state run school that is still majority LDS, but not run by the church. There are a lot of similarities to BYU because of how many students are LDS but there is a different culture since there isn't a fusion of the church and the school like at BYU. Sometimes a church general authority comes to speak, sometimes a byu professor gives a devotional, and sometimes an outside professional gives a more secular topic called a campus forum address, on something that they are an expert in. They are pretty much every week on Tuesday at 11AM at the Marriott Center, no ticket or reservation needed, and are streamed on BYU TV.

BYU demographics definitely are more “White”, but so is Utah where most of the students come from. In the US, I think it’s something around 80% of LDS are white; but globally, membership in Canada and US only make up 46% of the church’s members, with 38% in Latin America, and 16% in the rest of the world (Africa is currently blossoming).

I just really wanted to express my gratittude for this channel! I know for a fact that Christ rejoices in your foundational principle of "fight criticism with curiosity." This is the principle I really tried to nourish on my mission when it came to harder topics with The Church of Jesus Christ of Lattery-day Saints and also with learning about other religions. Thank you again for the positive light and godoness you put out with this channel! Many Latterday Saints rejoice seeing people who truly wish to underst and not just tear down. I had a great experience, and I was just so excited to go to a place where everyone would understand me and my beliefs and not look at me or my lifestyle as odd. Indeed, I could feel a sense of unity with believers. It was fun for me, and what I loved the most were my religion classes because I love learning spiritual truth. It's a difficult social scene because it's so big, and so many young singles come to live there who aren't even attending a school. I did love coming back home to my singles branch in Oregon and having a smaller group to associate with.

My father made from scraps of wood and metal a seat for the back of his bike. I rode in mom’s front basket attached to the handlebars. I love BYU! My husband and I met while doing to school there. Met and married in 6 months so we are those people 😂 but we've been happily married for almost 16 years so we made the right call. I have been going to campus since I was 14 because once a year in August they have BYU Education Week. A week where the campus is filled with classes all day in religious and some secular subjects (marriage, finance, parenting, mental health, music, etc). There are multiple classes to choose from each hour and you can just go wherever you want to. They have youth classes as well and I have been going with my family for most of my life. I cannot recommend it highly enough. I learned more about the gospel and doctrine from education week than from 4 years of seminary. My favorite week of the year is sitting in religious classes all day 😂❤.

While it's true that BYU is part of the Mormon culture, that is only really the case in Utah. Most LDS live outside of the US and for them, BYU is something they have no connection with or reference to at all. Which brings me to a broader comment regarding the scope of Hello Saints. At some stage it may be worth considering visiting and interacting with Saints in other countries. For example, the longest continuous congregation of the LDS church is in Preston, England. British LDS are quite different in some respects to our American co-religionists, and our faith plays out differently in our more secular and multi-cultural societies. Just a thought.

When I toured BYU last fall I was told a fun story about the Y! You notice that some of the mountains have letters on the side of them, that’s to represent the local college in that area. When they were putting the letter on the mountain for byu they wanted to use all the letters so they started with the Y to make sure it was centered and when they finished the Y they decided it took wayyy too long so they just left it! So instead of using the B or U as the logo they use the middle letter (the Y)!

Another great video to add to your postings. It was also nice to meet your wife. I have enjoyed watching this journey you are on. BYU is a great university, I got my undergrad from there and met my wife there. The "Y" actually comes from when the student body first went to paint the Mountain with BYU. They started with the Y and it took so much time, paint and effort that by the end of the day all they had done was the Y, so they left it. After that the school went by the abbreviated Y for their logo and how people refer to it. At least that is the story I heard on a tour.

It’s a whole science and yes, a very nice facility. Concerning religious education. Every student is required to take 14 hours of religion courses to graduate. A career in religious education is possible, either as a scholar, professor, or Seminary (high school) or Institute (higher Ed) education and administration. I now teach online Institute as a volunteer. I got permission to write my own course. It’s about Jesus Christ’s interactions with the women in the New Testament. I have no formal religious education degree. The tree of life sculpture used to be near a statue of Brigham Young. If you ran past it and looked at the statue, it looked like Brigham Young is doing the funky chicken.
