Hello Saints

Hello Saints

My name is Jeff McCullough and I'm a christian pastor on a quest to learn everything I can about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (aka Mormonism). Learn with me!

This channel is devoted to fighting criticism with curiosity as I invite dialogue between Christians and Mormons. Are Mormons Christians? What do Christians and Latter-day Saints agree and disagree about? Join me as I compare and contrast the lifestyle, culture and beliefs of Mormons and mainstream Christianity.

    Can you please talk to all of your pastor friends who are canceling building use agreements with homeschool groups in Utah? We, and several other homeschool groups here have been renting out your buildings the past few years. We love using them, they are empty during the week normally, and we don't mind paying to use them. Recently though, many of these groups have been told to move on. One told us that "you should use your own churches." I mean we could, and it would be free if we get approval to use them. We are not a religious group, but a group of religious people so it's a bit perplexing why the church would kick us out, and would choose not to take our money. I know many of these churches could use it. It feel like religious bigotry to me, and I wish you'd talk to them and simply ask, Why are you doing this?

    I think this was a wonderful pass at the exercise. I don't think involve a Latter Day Saint is inherrently necessary, specifically because it highlights how this verbiage is understood outside our own vernacular. That said, one piece of context that might be helpful, that was touched on briefly was that Joseph was effectively offering the LDS position on poingant questions/disputes/issues of faith of the day. It makes sense to understand that he's not trying to be fully comprehensive, he's just orienting the curious as compared to other common faith questions.

    An interesting thing to think about. Perhaps Utah mainstream Mormonism is only a remnant of JS restoral and just as mixed up as protestantism is of original Christianity which if examined pre Constantine...was much more universal. Just as Christianity has "an authority line" and those who would claim it as theirs, Mormonism also has an authority line , both of which....are not to be unquestioned and just as Christianity, and its doctrine have many tributaries so also ..does "Mormonism". No one should "assume" mainstream Mormonism is the true restoration anymore than any Christian congregation has all "the truth" and "authority" of original Christianity. Just some interesting thoughts to dwell on. I am not a literalist and can read many Christian documents with the spirit....and also the BOM. Now the BOM ...was "composed" by Joseph Smith by claimed divine inspiration as the Bible was Composed by many however it is interesting to understand that Joseph Smith was one man and recent, however the Bible was many many men spanning many many years with many different bias, connotation and denotation. Conclusion...which also is academic fact....Judaism of today is not the Judaism of 600BC....from which the BOM claims to begin. Also ...Christianity of today looks nothing like it did 0-33 AD, and..mainstream Mormonism....looks nothing like Joseph's Mormonism. Many mysteries exist...for instance after numerous detailed and painstaking searches...why oh why are there ZERO children of Joseph Smith except by Emma if he had so many "women". If the caretakers of Christianity thru history...have gotten pre Constantine Christianity in error...perhaps Mainstream Mormonism has pre Brigham mormonism...in error. And just as Christ's apostles constantly erred in understanding Christ....etc etc. Peace.

    26:43 Because the plates aren't meant to be like a huge envelope about how the ancestors were bad when the purpose of the plates are based upon on how it's another Testament of Jesus Christ, not another Testament of the Nephites or the lamanites, or else the future would risk missing the point. When the main goal and idea is to come on to jesus, not be judgmental over the ancestors that molded them to who they chose to be. P.s. I’m not a Latter Day Saint, however, I have so much respect for you as I see you bridging the gap between Christian denominations. This is what I imagine Jesus will be grateful for when we face Him at the judgement seat. I believe this is what Jesus would have us do. No one has the only market share of His gospel. No one is perfect. That’s why we have a Savior of the World.

    Hello Pastor Jeff- My name is Russ Serage, I've lived in St. George for 30 years and I raised my family here. I was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Commerce, Oklahoma on June 10, 1978. I'm from Joplin and I'm a generational St. Louis Cardinals fan. I would very much like to meet you If you ever come to St. George (during your Utah travels) or, perhaps during one of my many and frequent trips to Salt Lake City. I've been following you for a good minute and I find you a fascinatingly interesting dude (keep in mind, I've only seen you on edited videos...so, just keepin' it real.) There's nothing special about me, no notoriety of any sort I'm just a long-time member of the church with a Protestant background similar to yours and a fellow "Show Me Stater." I can see from recent videos you have hooked yourself into influencers, unique members of the church, prominent members of the church (BYU professors et al) and so forth, so perhaps you've "moved past" someone like myself...a self-professed "General Worshiper." However, if my request/invitation has piqued even the slightest interest in your giving me a moment of your time...lmk. I own a perspective on the church and being a resident of Utah that's a bit different from most folks around these parts and maybe you might find it useful. Hope to hear from you. Best-

    I’m honestly not sure why this is still such a hotly contested concept. James clearly lays out the answer. James 2:20-26 “But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, 'Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.'And he was called the friend of God. You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.”

    I grew up Mormon was always taught that you know the spiritual aspect of the subjective part of my life in the sense of experiences with the savior Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, as well as our heavenly father was all I needed as I grown older. I do now see I need tons of logic. This is why I study the Bible finding 40,000+ manuscripts that all saying the same thing, and so forth, the Bible is the word of God, the authority of God, old and new and final Testament of God there is no more. Jesus Christ is the seal of all the prophets Hebrews one verse one ❤

    Ok. We got to sealing. That is from the New Testament I give you power that which you seal on Earth stays sealed on Earth and that which you seal in Heaven is sealed in Heaven. Now yes Men can be sealed for Eternity to all his wives ( sequential wives not concurrent,ie married, widower,remarry,etc. There are also just Temporal sealings where spouses will be sealed for time but not time AND Eternity. Polygamy was banned and President Hinkley (early 2000's reiterated that the current practice is banned. Also that there is no such thing in the Church's eyes as a fundamentalist mormon. None of these so called break away sects are recognized. The * asterisk being we do recognize the historic practice from when it was part of the ordinances and legal. Nothing after. And like he said that was in the 19th century. Not a thing done since.

    Here's the truth. If we were guaranteed to grow spiritually unto good works as a result of grace and the eternal salvation we've been given, there would be no need for Paul and the other new testament writers to petition us to live Godly upright lives. The very fact they do this in their writings is proof that it's possible for one to be born again and never progress spiritually or as one who needs milk rarher than meat as Paul put it. These new testament petitions to Godly living implies a needed willful decision to walk in the Spirit rather than the flesh. Just because one is seemingly walking in the flesh continually does not mean the spiritual birth and indwelling of the Holy Spirit did not occur. It just means that it is being suppressed in that persons life.

    One striking difference is how much energy is put into the Sunday service between bishop and pastor. It was clear how much effort is used on sermons. To be clear, the focus for all worship on Sunday is the sacrament. And we strive to have wonderfully inspired talks and music. But the amount of energy a bishop needs to put into this is minimal.. With the ward members giving talks, the invitation to speak and selecting topics is a relatively short piece of work, and it can mostly be delegated to counselors. In bishopric, we review the sunday service, but most focus is on administrative tasks, such as callings and releases to extend to members and fill the 80+ positions in the ward for it to function. We discuss families in need and how we can serve them. We discuss budget items. Another difference is the ward council. The presidents of the EQ, RS, Primary, Sunday School and Young Women's meet with the bishopric (bishop, counselors, clerk, secretary) and selected others such as missionaries, family history/ temple representatives, and discuss activities, families in need, schedules, goals and plans, etc. This group, if engaged correctly, should allow the bishop to keep his hours to 10-20 hours a week in that calling.

    I've never been called as a bishop, but I was 2nd counselor in the EQ for 2 years, EQ President for 2 years, 1st Counselor in the Bishopric for 5 years, Ward Mission Leader for 2 years, and I've currently been the ward clerk for 3 years. In all callings, you can be as busy as you want to be. Your choice to magnify your calling, or just go through the motions. I have seen bishops that over function, and don't delegate enough to the EQP, the RSP, and their counselors, clerk and secretary.

    Whatcha gonna do when you find out it is true? Ask someone about the Kolob theorem. And then start taking note of what galaxies look like. And now that we have these telescopes that see farther than ever thought possible... just how many galaxies are there out there? 3,4,5 thousand years ago... man did not even know we were in a galaxy... or what a galaxy was. They could not see that far with the naked eye. They had no idea. Now we know. And ask yourself... when looking at galaxies... what is in the center of every single one of them? That will propel you on your way to discovery.

    @nuthintoprove - Hello. What do you mean finally comes clean? I have watched every Hello Saints video from the beginning of the channel and I don't see where Pastor Jeff ever said he was exploring the Church with intention to find out if it's true and possibly join. In fact, in several videos he has made it very clear he doesn't plan on joining. People can be curious and respectfully explore other religions and be comfortable in their own at the same time. I don't think Jeff originally intended to even read the Book of Mormon but realized he can't explore The Church effectively without reading it. Reading and being ready to pray about truth are two different things. If you are equating his readiness with creating off-ramps, that's your prerogative. I have a different take on this channel. My faith is not shaken by Hello Saints. I'm here because I am strengthened by watching in real time about someone who knew virtually nothing about The Church learn and grow in the Gospel. I have learned a lot about Evangelicals too. I feel I have become a better person because every time Jeff has a question, I challenge myself to see how I would answer, and sometimes I have to study and increase knowledge myself. I would actually credit Jeff and Hello Saints with strengthening my testimony of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He is Protestant and has reminded us he has no intention of becoming a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Yet, he has taken time and effort to try and understand the teachings and doctrines of what we LDS believe to be the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. It is incredibly refreshing to see two people of different faiths speak so respectfully to each other. It proves that we can get along with one another despite our differences. Just as Jesus Christ has taught us to do.

    Joseph Smith clearly identified the hill in NY as the same hill mentioned in the BoM. The only reason Tyler does the classic sidestep is because almost nothing supports what Joseph said about the hill. The BoM can’t be put down anywhere on a map because it does not appear to be actually historical.

  • @micheleh3851
    @micheleh38513 күн бұрын

    @LatterDayInvestigator - Joseph Smith referred to the hill by his home in NY where he was shown the plates by Moroni and where he was eventually allowed to retrieve the plates as a "hill of considerable size." It was Mormon in the Book of Mormon who referred to hiding up all the records in a hill called Cumorah in the land of Cumorah, except for a few records which he gave his son Moroni. It was Moroni in the Book of Mormon who said he would hide those records "in the earth." This is why the location of Cumorah is not clear. However, there is no question among Latter-day Saints that Joseph Smith was shown the plates at the hill by his home and was given permission by Moroni to retrieve them from that same hill 4 years later. This hill has been named Hill Cumorah. Whether it is the same Hill Cumorah that Mormon referenced is not known.

    @@micheleh3851 Go read the journals of Joseph, as well as the writings of Oliver Cowdery and David Whitmer, and several of the statements by Martin Harris. They all clearly understood the hill in NY to be the same hill referred to in the text of the BoM.

    @LatterDayInvestigator - Go read the testimony of Joseph Smith. He described the hill just as I posted. Go read the Book of Mormon. Mormon and Moroni described the place(s)where they hid the plates just as I posted.

  • @LatterDayInvestigator
    @LatterDayInvestigator2 күн бұрын

    @@micheleh3851 I’m not saying what you quoted is quoted inaccurately. I’m saying that you’re leaving out what they all clearly understood, and what was accepted among members until the mid 1900s (when archeology started to cast doubt on the idea the NY hill was the actual Cumorah). Consider the following from the Introduction to the BoM: “After Mormon completed his writings, he delivered the account to his son Moroni, who added a few words of his own and hid up the plates in the Hill Cumorah. On September 21, 1823, the same Moroni, then a glorified, resurrected being, appeared to the Prophet Joseph Smith and instructed him relative to the ancient record and its destined translation into the English language.” Also, you should go read Oliver Cowdery’s Letter VII, which was addressed to WW Phelps, published in the Messenger and the Advocate with Joseph’s blessing, and later repeatedly redistributed by Cowdery at the request of Joseph. In the letter, it very obviously identifies the NY hill as the very hill where the final battles occurred and also where the record was buried. scripturecentral.org/archive/books/book-chapter/letter-vii

    I'm very surprised that you want proof for the Book of Mormon to be true.Can you not fast and pray with an open heart to get your answer from the Lord. I was a Lutheran in Germany but my family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints because of the Book of Mormon, and there is no way that anyone can convince me that the Book of Mormon is not true. It is the word of God and if you would carefully read and ponder it you would see it yourself. Maybe watch "How rare a possession". A Catholic priest from Cicely, Italy found a Book of Mormon without cover and started teaching out of it without knowing where is was from because he got his own personal revelation from God that is was true and even had to give up his profession because he wasn't going to deny the truthfulness. It took him around 40 years to find the church that belonged to this wonderful book.Also, a young man from Seattle who was a priest joined the Church of Jesus Christ of latter day Saints because of the Book of Mormon. I was at his fireside and his testimony was powerful.. His mother was very upset but got baptized into our church herself later on. He gave up everything also and started a new profession. Are you afraid of finding out the Book of Mormon is true and you have to do the same, unless you will deny it. Or talk to David Alexander. Now that would be an interesting podcast. Sorry I'm blunt but I didn't know how to write it differently.
