I'm so glad to hear y'all appreciate the oscillating fan shot. In an abstract way it reminds me of how Unfriended used the main character typing and editing her text before entering it in an IM to expose her inner dialogue; they used the quirks of their unusual format in a clever way. The fan shot is also a clever use of an unusual format that they use to build tension in a subtle and believable way-a remarkable feat for found footage-as opposed to having a character creep slowly around a corner with a handheld camera in a sequence of predictable jumpscares. I love that they went for realism in that the camera doesn't pan to jumpscares but instead starts to pan away as something creepy happens at the edge of the frame (like the girl climbing up onto the table). It's so much scarier and is a more artful take. Meanwhile people think these movies are lazy!

Katie and Kristy's relationship with Toby almost sounds like a metaphor for a creep that hangs around the family. He gave the grandma money in exchange for her young relatives, he won't leave them alone, their friendship is a secret and they seem to kind of repress their memories of him. His dislike of Dennis seems like he doesn't want someone who would block access to the girls. Speaking of Dennis, maybe Lois somehow knew that any kid he'd father wouldn't be adequate, hence her dislike of him. Also, I read a theory that Toby somehow knew Katie wouldn't give him the son he wants and viewing the way he treats Katie through that lens makes it even more disturbing, as it seems like he's punishing her.

Have to say, this run of Paranormal Activity podcasts have been so much fun to listen to. For one, the podcasts are always improving, which is obviously what everyone hopes for, and secondly, these movies actually have tons of coold stuff to talk about, that maybe haven't been discussed as much as the go-to list of classic horror movies. Would love to see you continue this format and go on to talk about other franchises, like Conjuring or Insidious. Keep it up guys, love you and appreciate you.

Funny that the mom smoking pot is kind of a big deal here; I watched Poltergeist the other night and noticed that, early on in the movie, the parents are chilling in their bedroom smoking a j and it was just a background thing. I guess 1982 was pre-D.A.R.E.

Heya! You can't have basements in Texas because a lot of places are under or right at sea level, so if you dig you're going to hit the water table. The other reason is because the soil is mostly clay, so the basement would be too unstable, or stone, so you would have to blast through the rock layer, which is really dangerous and really, really expensive. So it's just kind of a given that you're not getting a permit to build one. So....no basements!

Okay, so I had a couple of ideas on how to explain some thing in this podcast. Please, dont quote me on any of this because these are just theories I've made on my own based on my own personal research. Anyway, first, I would like to address the Bloody Mary folklore. Yes, it is true that the name was entitled to Queen Mary I, daughter of Henry VIII, and I think Anne Boleyn? (Again, dont quote me on that) And she went on her own sort of anti-protestant crusade, and basically genociding non-Catholics left and right. Because of this, I believe that the origin of the mirror chant stems from the very staff of the castle in which Bloody Mary lived. So, imagine this: you are a maid in the castle, cleaning a window or a mirror, gossiping about the queen (say, about her inability to have a child, or so) with another, when you look up into the reflective surface that you are cleaning, and see none other than Bloody Mary herself in the reflection behind you, listening to everything you said. Now, in this case particularly, Queen Mary took her barrenness VERY harshly, and with all the other things she's done, why would she not hesitate to harm/kill a maid? From this, the story is told, rumors are spread, and centuries later the child's legend about Bloody Mary that we know today is created. The second thing I wanted to discuss was on the idea (fact) that children in horror movies can be creepy. I personally believe that this is widely perceived because children are often associated with words such as "innocent" and even "pure". We often dont see children as even being capable of dark thoughts or emotions, so to see them 'tainted', as it were, in this way can be viewed as unnerving, and even terrifying because it goes against everything we think that a child should be. Again, though, these are just my takes on the discussion addressed in the podcast. Dont take any of my words to heart, because I cannot personally guarantee them to be true.

I think the demon wanting Katie was a retcon that has explanation to it from the second movie. The demon uses Katie to get Hunter, so he’s really just playing a long game. I think after the girls were groomed by Lois, the demon was able to go dormant for a while, knowing the girls were in - to his mind - safe hands. Then after Kristi got married and became pregnant, he latched on to her again, until he was able to begin possessing her, in hopes that he could use her as a vessel to get to Hunter. So when Kristi is exorcised and Daniel sends the demon onto Katie, he breaks down Katie until he can possess her, and since Micah is a complete sceptic, he won’t be exorcised from Katie’s body, meaning he is able to finally take down the obstacles to get his prize. He only wants her so that he can use her to get what he wants.

Omg when you were talking about the downstairs fireplace around 19:40, that reminded me of when I was like 3-5 (2004-2006) years old, I would store all my toys in our fireplace since there hadn't been a fire in it since 1999. It was never used, and I always would play in the family room, so it made sense to me. But I finally had to move them upstairs to my closet since guests would come over and congregate in the family room, and it would be an eyesore. The point is, toys in the fireplace is a real thing lol

When I was younger, I would tell scary stories and one time I went to a relative's birthday party. Long story short, I scared all the kids and was banned from telling scary stories.

Chelsea is talking about "Snake Church" I learned about it in anthropology and they did believe in preaching with rattlesnakes and venomous snakes. They believed, if they died they died and the pastor in the series was actually bitten and almost died and his wife and mother (who's husband died the same way) begged him to go to the hospital.

My sisters shared a room that was a converted loft. From the stairs going to the second floor above and behind you was just a banister and to the right and behind the top of the stairs is where you went up. There were also two attics up here but one has never been opened. Both of them were entered by doors that were just big wood pieces fitted into a slot. The one never opened had extra plastic over it and the other a towel jammed on top to keep it closed. One night me and one of my sisters were up there when suddenly we heard something slamming into the one that did open. I thought maybe I was dreaming until my sister asked if I heard it too. It went on for an hour- just slamming; we could see the door shaking. Thankfully the room was being used for storage at this point so there was other stuff up against it and the banisters.

its very interesting to hear people raised Catholic say they grew up believing in demons and had religion related rules in their home. I grew up Catholic and went to Catholic school (like I did not go to a public school I went to religious education) but I find that within every denomination there's kinda two ways to treat it: one treats like a culture and the other like a religion. And I definitely was from the culture side of the tracks. For me growing up, personal beliefs never mattered, your private time was yours. What mattered was that you were identifiable as Catholic and passed on Catholic to your kids. My parents were personally atheists, but it didn't matter, and I never even had a choice on whether or not I went to Catholic school and doing the sacraments cause "we're Catholic and this is what we do, no one cares what you personally think just do it". At my school we learned better science and sex ed and learned more about other religions than they got in public school, cause what we believed or did behind closed doors didn't matter. I'm never sure how I feel about that. On one hand its very...fake...and restricting cause its all about traditions and appearances and not about what you want, but on the other hand the fact no one cares what you think gives you a lot of freedom in private...anyways, its neat to hear from Catholics who's church treated it like a religion, its like a whole different world. Its funny how one denomination of one religion can have so many faces.

In basic terms, marketing is the process of identifying customer needs and determining how best to meet those needs. In contrast, advertising is the exercise of promoting a company and its products or services through paid channels. In other words, advertising is a component of marketing
