Thank you for a great video of such a beautifully restored P-51 Mustang named by George E. Preddy, the top P-51 ace in the European Theater with 31 total kills (according to my kit, Pica 1/5 Scale P-51). From what I read, this plane has won the 1987 Oshkosh Grand Champion Warbird award and many hours of restoration were put into making this aircraft just like the one Preddy flew. Thank you for that! And, also thank you for sharing some proud American history with all of us. I always loved aviation, since a kid (still am a kid at heart) and I built models, flew models, and flew real planes (with my pilot buddies), and out of college my 1st job was with North American Aviation (1972), located on the LAX airport runway, where I worked on the B1 as an engineer. That was quite an exciting job for me with my love of flight and aircraft. A friend, Harry, gave me a gift back in 1994, a Radio Controlled flying scale model P-51D, 1/5 scale, from Pica, modeled after the Cripes A' Mighty and its decals and scale pictures are all from this aircraft shown in this video, Kermit Weeks P-51 Mustang. At least, I think this is the case? Kermit is owed a lot of respect and thanks for all his accomplishments and for bringing to Generations to come a live history so we can remember, as I do, our fathers and our grandparents, and fellow Americans and their machines that fought in WWII. Thanks Kermit!

Watching all these old warplanes are so sleek and nice, but then it dawned onto me we'll never in this day and age watch them actually perform the activities they were designed to do - engage other enemy aircraft in mortal combat and desperate survival. The sensation and awe would just be on a whole different level. For example, ask any British citizen who had a front row seat witnessing the conflicts occurring in the skies during the Battle of Britain; you can hear it from the way they recall their experiences.

Very cool video, this particular airplane before it was restored in the blue nose colours was one of 30 P-51Ds that served with the Royal New Zealand Air Force's TAF (kinda like the US ANG) during the 1950's. It flew for 4 years in private hands during the mid 1960's before being sold to the states. her original service number was NZ2417

Of the thirty RNZAF P51s, there are only three left - another source I read said four. One in Britain, not in flying condition, another in private storage in New Zealand and the one shown here.

I love this video. Excellent sound and camera work. I also love the way that Kermit takes off in the p51 with the flaps up, unlike almost all other videos I've seen of p51s flying demos. Surprising how many pilots take off with flaps extended, it is not the normal procedure in this plane.

I noticed the no flaps on takeoff, fortunately I checked for comments on it before being redundant. One P-51 pilot I talked to back when I was a kid said his WWII group would usually take off with partial flaps and less than full throttle - "full flaps and full throttle was a recipe for disaster!" I've never seen anyone confirm that, so apparently there was some variation on the "book procedures." Great video, you nailed the sound, I can watch P-51s all day.

George Preddy flew Cripes A'Mighty 3rd for a few months in 1944. Kermit Weeks has owned his restored Cripes A'Mighty 3rd for over 30 years. Preddy is the world's top Mustang ace with 26.83 aerial victories, most of them scored in Cripes A'Mighty 3rd !

This is not the original Cripes A'Mighty 3rd. It was shot down after George Preddy's death. Preddy was killed in a friendly fire incident on Christmas Day 1944. He was flying very low level when he was shot and might have survived the crash, but he had been hit by anti-aircraft fire. Such a tragedy. He was not flying Cripes A'MIghty 3rd on that day. He had an incredible day flying the original Cripes A'Might 3rd where he shot down 6 enemy fighters in five minutes while severely hung over, vomiting just before going into combat. He won the Medal of Honor for it. Uh, for shooting down the planes. Not for vomiting. But lord, I can't imagine going into aerial combat severely hung over (btw, he had gotten drunk because he thought the mission had been cancelled). That was the last time he flew Cripes A'Mighty 3rd. If you watch the actual combat footage from Preddy's planes you see he was an incredible shot. His bursts almost always are clustered dead center on the other plane and he frequently takes out the other plane in a very short burst. An incredibly impressive pilot. It is interesting that there are so few Navy aces compared to the Army and Marines. The reason is a major difference in pilot philosophy. The Navy emphasized teaching to an unusual degree, probably due to the difficulty of carrier landings. But they were always pulling their better pilots for training. So Jimmie Thach, who was as gifted as any flier of the war, was pulled and assigned to training. His two major disciples, Butch O'Hare and Jimmy Flatley, were also pulled for training, but O'Hare got back to combat, where he tragically was shot down (and had a tiny airport outside Chicago named for him - seriously, they have a nice display for him at O'Hare Airport, complete with a Grumman Wildcat hanging from the ceiling, one of the original Wildcats, with only two machine guns in each wing, not like the later FM-2 Wildcats with six machine guns).
