Kermit Weeks Test Flies TBM on Thanksgiving
Kermit Weeks takes his TBM for a spin on Thanksgiving Day to prepare for the 15th anniversary of Fantasy of Flight. Interesting to note--this type aircraft is affectionately nicknamed "the Turkey"! Color commentary by Wayne Root and Andy Salter of Fantasy of Flight's Aircraft Department.

My Grandfather was a Seabee in the Pacific during WWII. He was one of the original "Donovan's Boys". He always said if you saw the movie "The Fighting Seabees" with John Wayne, it was pretty accurate. They used to call the Avenger the "beer hauler". As they had no refrigeration when they first hit an island, they would get together with a TBM pilot and fill the bomb bay with beer. The pilot would then take it up to 15 to 20 thousand feet for about 15 minutes, come back down, and wala, ice cold beer. Thank you for all the hard work you've done over the years to keep these magnificent pieces of history alive. "Lest We Forget". Take care and God Bless from Florida.
Thanks Kermit and crew for an amazing weekend! 15 planes in three days...pure, once in a lifetime magic!!
Wonderful. The Air War in Europe gets all of the attention, but the Air War in the Pacific was nutz! Mic drop.
great video to watch
Great spirited display,thanks Kermit !
Amazing. Wonderful video. Thanks again
Great job Kermit!!
I love the avenger, it always looks like the business. "Ok! What carrier are we gonna torp today??"
Dad was a radioman/tai lgunner on TBF Avenger (Composite Squadron 7 ). Saw action in Saipan and other Pacific areas.
Kermit is such a great pilot! That landing was flawless. I've got to get back down to the FoF soon!!! :)
The lope of that radial is sounding good. Avengers are cool aircraft and the guys that flew them in combat had Iron Nugies.
NOTHING sounds like a round motor!
Yes you do! :)
10/10
If Kermit can´t fly this baby then nobody can :-)
Only reason I asked is that you have alottttt of engines in the collection, didn't know if you had it retrofitted.
Any ideas as to what the Paint-scheme will look like???
Did y'all make an earlier flight with her? Usually don't bring the landing gear up on a maiden flight.
Before the Kermie Cam. He needs to do an update with cockpit video.
Needs paint and markings! :)
Double row p&w??? Or single 9

The Avenger had a twin-row fourteen cylinder Wright R-2600. Great engine, used in the B-25 as well.

M means General Motors. F means Grumman. TBF/TBM. GM took over manufacture of Avengers and Wildcats. At the start of the US phase of WW2 most of our aircraft manufacturers were on the coasts. The government wanted to move some of it further inland. That's why Boeing is in Wichita. Kelly, you may be thinking of the Corsair. That was made by Goodyear and had the designation FG4.

Folding wings always seemed a bit unsafe to me...anyway, I have seen TBF/TBM in person, and they are indeed huge, for a single-engine aircraft. A single R-2600 seems a bit under-engined for the size and weight of the aircraft, maybe an R-3350, R-4360, or even an R-2800 would have been better? Actually, an Allison V-3420 probably would have been optimal, but that one would have never gotten into the Navy (Radial biased).....
