Curtiss TP 40N - First Flight in 4 1/2 Years
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
I recently got a chance to try a test flight in our TP-40N!
If you'll remember, the last time I flew it, FOUR AND A HALF YEARS AGO, the landing gear didn't want to come up so I immediately put it down and landed safely. I had already bellied in my other P-40E due to a problem and didn't want a repeat episode. I decided not to fly this one again until we re-installed an original emergency system, which for some reason in the past was taken out! This involved having special components made, pulling the fuel tanks out to install them, and then doing lots of gear swings. Finally we were able to get her out and take her for the test flight. She ran great! Check it out.

my favorite aircraft of all time. it even bears my name. CURTIS.
Kermit, this never gets old! Thank you!
"...my other P-40E." I think you're one of the luckiest men alive, sir! :)
Good stuff, I'm so happy to see the money, time and effort you, and your crew, put into keeping these flying monuments in the air. Thank you very much, Sir.
Absolutely my favorite warbird. Thanks for the vid.
Damn that bird sounds good when you buzzed the field..
Amazing! You're the man Kermit. Your team is fantastic as well. I'd love to come over from California and see you guys. Thanks for the awesome videos.
I wish i coud keep hitting the thumbs up. Thank you for posting the video. The p-40 is one of my all time. I can't wait until we get our p-40 back up and running here at the
Kermie Cam!, Kermie Cam!, Kermie Cam! .....PLEASE!! I love the P40, my grandfather worked as ground crew for Kittyhawks (RNZAF) in the Pacific in WW2.... Did I mention you should do a Kermie Cam?! :)
Great video Kermit! Thanks for sharing with us. I love seeing these warbirds get back into the air. I look forward to an explanatory flight with the Go-Pro. I enjoy those videos where you explain in detail what it takes to get the old girls in the air and flying.
I will impress, as I hear the sound of that full-blown engine. The old warbird, took flight again. Congratulations, for that great job.
Nothing like the sound of a WW2 aircraft flying fast and low level. Awesome!!!
I know that this was the early fighter planes n WWII and most people always seem to like the P-51 or the P-38 or Corsair but the P-40 has always been my favorite fighter of the era. My father was a nose gunner in a PB4Y logging over 113 missions in the south pacific so I have always really loved the aircraft from this era but there is just something about the P-40, It's a sexy son of a gun!
Does anyone else get a nostalgic moment watching her fly, I keep thinking of people like Bob Scott and thats exactly what it would have been like when he buzzed the field in WW II. Thank God for people like Kermit who keep these birds flying and the memory of our vets from WW II alive.
Kermit, thank you for sharing! Saw this lovely bird at Osh a number of years ago...
Great to see that it still flies. Love the P40.
Scary sounding strafing run.........excellent mike and sound work on this video!!!!
This was wonderful. The sound of the Allison 1710. Reminded me of the story of General Claire Chennault and the " Flying Tigers." The A.V.G., who were fighting it out against the Japanese in China before Pearl. ( The Ragged, Rugged, Warriors. Martin Caiden. )
Thanks for this video. I was down at the old Tamiami facility the day the rt gear wouldn't come down on the first P-40E.
My favorite war bird still sounds good keep up the good work Kermit 👍
I love the Curtiss P -40. I had a plastic Revell model of it when I was a kid. This plane just growls brown leather jacket, khakis, officer's dress pinks&greens and U.S . Army Air Corps.
after the mustang the p-40 got the most amazing sound when flyby

Love this P-40!!!
January 2023. Wonder how long it's been sitting now. I really admire Kermit's dedication and work. He pours millions into amazing stuff but it pains me to see how much they sit around.
Thank you for sharing this , i uesed to fly U Control Cox models as kid and i had a P40 , P51 an F4U Corsair and a Spitfire . those were dizzy days but fun

Now a days it's what's a control line plane?
Beautiful bird Kermit. You're a lucky man.
Sounds like the Allison is a bit grumbly when cold... but what a beautiful song on those low passes! Makes me want to review the old audio cassettes I made flying with Fred Sebby. (Got his name right this time! LOL)
He’s an amazing pilot to be able to fly so many different airplanes
Very impressive one of the best
Beautiful aircraft, I have visited your museum in the past a few times (and I live in Britian) and have had a wonderful time! Keep it up! Also, is there any news of how the Tempest is getting on?
What an awesome sound!!!!! Oh!!! To be a neighbor!!!!! “ Honey, what was that sound?.....oh! Just Kermit flying his P-40......”
I love fantasy of flight! my problem is just getting there. last time I was there was before the remodel. So I want to go now more than ever!
Fix it before your next flight for it might be your last. Outstanding P-40. Great video too. Would love a Kermie cam with this aircraft at altitude.
Shark teeth war paint looks awesome on these
Brilliant video, been a fan since world airshows video 😂
@Kermie - What a sweet ride, the roar of that Allison engine is pure joy! As far as the vibration, check the cooling fan blades, sometimes they'll shear from their retainers, which can damage the propeller.

What a beauty !
Awesome! Probably one of the few Warhawks that still has the original inertial starter system! Kermie Cam would rock!
We rebuilt a P-40 here in Tyabb Australia, and it fly's on a regular basis, it looks really compact flying next to the Mustang.
Wow! Awesome plane!
Beautiful
That Allison engine sounds ridiculously awesome

I could be wrong but i believe the N model had a Merlin engine
The P-40 to me has always been a good looking plane.
That old Allison sounds pretty healthy!
And that, my friends, is pure music.
I just don't understand how there aren't constant car wrecks on that stretch of highway that runs by Kermit's airfield when he's playing with his toys. Once, driving by a small local airport, and AT-6 flew low over my car and I was so surprised and amazed that I almost drifted into the oncoming lane.
Baddass Kemit.....nice plane too.
After 4/12 years you still have the touch
A Kittyhawk flew low over my house in NZ a few years ago, it was most impressive looking and sounding 😁
Mate you have the best job in the world
I hope to see the Catalina flying soon!
P-51's really get the limelight these days but the P-40 is one of my favorites, especially when compared to the later model bubble P-51's.It's been shown that a lot of the less then great reviews and info on them from back then was unjustified.

More rugged , better role rate , better in a dive , and with an Allison V1710 that could take one hell of a beating , the P-40 was an extremely lethal airplane in the hands of a pilot who knew how to exploit her strong points . Where in South Jersey ? Lived summers at my Uncles farm north of Freehold on Route 79 below Matawan . Remember the airfield off Rt. 79 ? Used to ride my bike there and take lessons over the summer . For rides they had an old Curtiss , a Stearman and a Cub . Farm and airfield are all gone now . Yep , love the P-40 too .
You know Kermit, to properly test fly this fine aircraft, you need to put somebody in the back seat. I would be happy to help out!
No parachute, no flame resistant flight suit. Kermie is pretty brave..
Awesome 😎
Love it Kermit.......thanks
I don't care if they say that this plane was not that succesfull during world war two........ i love the P-40. 🤗

P-40 was the only airplane in production before and during the entire war. So, they must have been a good airplane. And more where built than any other fighter. Pretty good I would say. And. Blue this airplane is my favorite airplane to.
Wh did they cut the windows up so high? Better visibility would have been great, especially in a trainer! Thanks for sharing this rare bird. No doubt these were only used for check rides as so few were made and even fewer were left after the war. There are tons of stearmans and P40 trainer variant I've ever seen!
Yay P-40!
What an awesome job! You are living every 40 year olds childhood dream. Nice
The p40 jb used in 1941 lives about 15 minutes from me

Hi There Ralph Your Dad would have been serving under the Command of Maj. Chennault, of the Aleutian Tigers. ADF. My Dad was also up north. He served with the R.C.A.F No. 111 (F) Sqdn The original ThunderBirds. Dad also worked on Kittyhawks, a " rigger " by trade. Together, the USAAC and the R.C.A.F really gave the I.J.N a blast of you know what ! It's good to see someone else give mention of the Aleutians. It was better known as The Forgotten War. cheers.
Yes, Kermit Cam please! She has great lines. Is there full 2nd set of controls in the rear?
The Elevator Foward Horn weighs are heaviest on long body TPs.
Nice. We relied on many of those old girls to defend Darwin until the new Spitfires arrived. P40's I mean, not trainer versions.
Magnifique! Congratulation! Merci! Very interseting sound: Is it a Rolls Rolls Merlin?

Cool video... just a bit disappointed there was no Kermie-Cam...
Do a video of the Jeep CFR rig..
Sounded and looked great in the air. Did you ever figure out what was causing the buffet?
This TP-40N would look great with shark teeth painted on its nose.
WOW
Hi Kermit, what a great plane this is! I was wondering how come you van fly all these planes? Do you have a license for each one? Love the vids you are making!
isso é que é vida.
Sounds like my tractor 4 cyl conanental at idle. Lol
Many years ago I was at the Weeks air museum at Tamiami airport when a P40 was flown. It could not retract the landing gear and made a belly landing. I wonder if this is the same P40?
That ALLISON is music 😃

Smoooooth runner! Had it had a better supercharger the Merlin might not have become the icon it has become.

Without a doubt . The auxiliary stage turbosupercharger limited the Allison , and in the case of the P-39's and P-40's its total omission doomed those airplanes into mediocrity . Although the P-40 in the hands of the right pilot was a lethal airplane , it's superior maneuverability over a P-51 coupled with a higher critical altitude and cruising speed made capable with a turbosupercharger would have made the P-40 one of aviation's elite aircraft . A P-51 has a slower roll rate than the P-40 . Snap rolls in a P-51 are relatively docile , while in a P-40 you better make sure you don't slam your head on the canopy ! The Allison V1710 was a better engine in many areas . A much tougher engine for one thing . The Merlin was more of a thoroughbred . The Allison fought in every theatre of the war , from sub-zero temperatures , to the tropics , the Allison brought many pilots home safely despite being shot-up in all kinds of weather conditions . I highly recommend to you a book called "Vee's for Victory". While highly technical , it's also a story about the development and refinement of the Allison V1710 . Quite an engine , and more are in operation today in warbirds than the Merlin . That says something for their design and overall build quality . And while the Merlin was and is a fabulous piece of engineering , the Allison is often referred to as an inferior design which is totally false .
Kermit, how often do you give all your aircraft engine runs? Do you have a schedule to keep them all running and in top shape?
How simular is the P-40"s Landing Gear to the Spitfire's Landing Gear ? Is it the same mechanical system ? :>)
Where are you located so I can have controls of this Warbirds of one of my favorites besides the P-51 mustang

War Thunder Player Intensifies
Whats your favourite plane ?
Where is that airfield in the video?
I've never subscribed to the point of view, the Catalina was a ugly. Marvellous plane and as tough as nails. 03:00
Did you ever get to the bottom of that 'buffet' Kermit???
Why do they let Kermit fly the Warbirds and complain so much? He owns the airport.
Best hobbie in the world! War bird alive!!!
And i feel lucky i have 3 P_40 cox model airplanes 🇺🇸
I did not know that there was any such thing as a two seat P-40.

Do you think it has duel controls? I saw some instruments. I know that some P-51's with two seats have only the seat. When I was younger I would have loved to ride in an airplane like that.
I hope you do not mind me asking but what dose tp meam because o thought it was just P-40
