We lived across the street from Hayward Municipal Airport and there were two P51 Mustangs that would take off all the time .I loved hearing them taxi and take off .Great sound and to watch them climb immediatly was something I never got tired of witnessing.

My dad also loved this airplane. He took me to see Bob Hoover fly his one afternoon in 1965. It was there he told me that if it weren’t for 4 of those airplanes one cold December ‘44 morning in the Ardennes forest, neither he or I would be standing there. Getting a type-rating in one is on my bucket-list. Gen. Anderson, I salute you sir! When men like Bud took to the skies, Hitler had to do a recount…

I was there in 2001 at the 50th Airventure. There were 19 Mustangs flying that year; including most of the planes in this video. Col. Chuck Yeager was there flying his own 51 Glamorous Glennis! He took up a bunch of young eagles in the Ford Trimotor just before I went up in it and shook my hand and signed my Trimotor ticket after the flight! A few minutes later he climbed in his Mustang and flew in formation with 18 other P 51 Mustangs.. What a sight it was to see him mount up and go. RIP Colonel. Check your six and press on! I remember that line of 19 Mustangs all doing their run-up together. Pretty dang Awesome! Have it all on video. I went on every ride there was and had a blast! Met Harrison Ford, Richard Bach, the owner of Target, the inventor of the Polaris flying boat and many others in my several visits there.

Watched Yeager and Anderson fly their prospective mustangs at Oshkosh, both in there 70s. It was amazing. Imagine how the pilots of those two mustangs feel knowing the original “owners” piloted their planes. Watched Bob Hover do his magic the same day. Oshkosh is a special place.

My dad was a crew chief with the Flying Tigers 43-45. Most of the time they had the P47s then one day the P51s came in and 47s left. Then a week later just the opposite. He got to taxi 51 but didn’t have much time with it. Before anyone says something. Yes the Tigers started out as the AVG (flying P40) but when the war started they became part of the 14th Air-force, still maintaining the Flying Tigers name. My dad is currently 97 yrs young!!

@American Patriot he flew hueys first then they got the cobras if I remember correctly. If I remember correctly he was shot down 10 times, was wounded and captured and escaped. He passed away after having heart surgery but I can’t remember when. 80s sometime. My brother served 23 yrs guard and active. His two sons were AF and Army. Three generations of military in our family.

My father was also a Flying Tigers and was a crew chief 41 to 45. To this day for me there is no sound that sounds so sweet as one of them Merlin's making a high speed pass right in front of me. My Father gave the love of old war birds. I remember as a child we would go to the Steerman Fly in and a P-40 or a 51 would stop short of runway and do a engine run up to check mags and I would look up at my dad.... the look in his eyes...it was like no look I had seen before... like a time machine. Pop's would tell me when he was crew chief that was his plane.... He would let the pilot borrow it!!! and it better come back in one piece. thanks for the memories and God bless everybody who has served and all the people it takes to keep them flying P.S. loved going to all the reunions for 14th air force as a child met Tex Hill and Don Curtis who designed the P-40

My dad talked about the P51 until the day he died. After the war he never flew again...but the P51 Mustang was in his heart and dreams. The P51 Mustang took his fear of dying away because he was invincible in that thing. He said it turned him into a killing machine from above.

... Thats right.....many of these we see here are Packard Merlins made in Detroit Mich. Packard dedicated a good chunk of their over one mile long production line to produce their version of the Merlin. Rarely stated is that the Merlin was based on a Curtis designed Engine, the D 12 model...designed in the good old USA. Credit must always be given to The Packard Brothers for their foresight and commitment to the .V- 12 engine concept. Heck , they had a production version in mid 1915..!! Even Enzo Ferrari found out about the V - 12 from Packard Army Staff cars at the end of WW 1 .( US and Italy were Allies in WW 1 ) ..Lots of people forget that. ... Packard .....a truly Great American INovation Company ..!

Who said design and engineering can't be beautiful. Possibly the most beautiful design in any field of engineering. I'll bet those German pilots recognized the beauty and performance of the Mustang and were a little envious. Just to bad they weren't available earlier in the war. Many heavy crews were lost without the protection of long range fighter protection.

Aww, Wilbur. 8 months on and still only two likes, one of which was from your own Sorearsetractor account and the other just someone commenting on the P-51H. For anyone who could be bothered to read this peculiar fool's inane comments, Wilbur, AKA Soararsetractor, is an armchair warrior and drunk who spends his time writing racist comments about British people, none of which, by his own admission, he has ever met. The source of his anger seems to revolve around the provenance of the Rolls Royce Merlin engine which, amusingly, he would like everyone to believe was invented by the now defunct Packard Motor Co., and his general inferiority complex and guilt over fact that he a is a draft dodging coward (again by his own admission) who refused to fight for his country during the Vietnam War. Apparently his father and grandfather did the same in previous wars. He actually admitted that! What a chump! Anyway, I thought any right thinking Americans who were puzzled by his comment might be interested to know.

What a beautiful noise to hear. It sounds a lot better than the trucks with the mufflers the size of cooking pots. It would have been awesome to hear 900 51's in the air during missions.

@FJoe Biden yes I did. A lot of Mustangs were used as escorts to bombers in WW2

@FJoe Biden you're right. I over exaggerated. That would be 900 bombers in some later missions Joe.

My father-in-law flew P-51s in World War II and in Korea. He was qualified to fly 46 different aircraft over his 30 year Air Force career but the Mustang was his favorite. Does anyone know how to contact the owner of the Mustang MX A with the red diagonal stripes on the tail. That was dad’s unit in World War II flying out of Italy.
