Owls, Haggis-Throwing, and the Highland Games: MUNCHIES Guide to Scotland (Episode 5)

Ойын-сауық

Charlet ends her Scottish food odyssey in Aberdeen, otherwise known as the “Oil Capital of Europe”, where a group of young rig workers take her for a big, jelly shot-based night out on the town before she heads to the Highland Games the next morning. Negotiating what is ostensibly the Scottish Olympics with a hangover is a daunting prospect, but all the haggis-throwing, Aberdeen Angus burgers, highland dancing, cullen skink and making friends with owls called Winky soon sets her right.

Lol. Yea she's pretty real in this series. Tbh, sometimes she acts like a ditz when she's on the bar scene (which is not surprising, most people are not always flattering when influenced by alcohol) but then she asks some pretty insightful questions sometimes and looks like she sincerely cares about the culture she's exploring.

She reminds me a bit of a Sarah Wiener series about food on French public TV recently. She's from Austria and speaks adequate French. She went around the country in a VW and spent days in places, learning dishes, throwing her own pots for the cooking, my picky Parisian spouse actually insisted we watch. I liked it, and some was pretty intense. Watching the kugelhopf nutty lady baker who deals with it as exact science was wild! (Actually, that episode helped me be more serious about my own kugelhopf!) I like Charlet just fine. I call her Legs.

Actually, I met several on my trip to Stornoway taking their time off. They weren't the hard-drinkers, bar guys... They were family men going home after 8 weeks away from their family. So don't give me this silly drunken sailor crap from the 1800s. These are family men who do one of the hardest jobs in the World - and they do so for their families.

+Ian L Too right! I'd guess that Scottish oil workers are just like all the oil workers we have here in Texas: Their duty day comes up, they pack their bags and head out to the rigs and the oil fields, they're out there for several months, then they cycle out and half of them go right back home to spend quality time with their families, the other half head right for the bars and strip clubs. I'm an Uber driver in Tyler, and I've driven the latter around the city several times. Props to those guys for taking Uber, Lyft or a Tyler Cab because they have the good sense to drink responsibly, and I have yet to see one of them spew his guts inside my car, but I stock my car with vomit bags, disinfectant and plenty of pure water just in case. I've only driven a few of the "family man" type of oil workers around town, and they've always been with their wives or girlfriends, or maybe a friend or two, but never any kids. They always seem to go to the swanky restaurants too, like the Shogun Japanese hibachi restaurant on Broadway. I'm not sure why they never bring any kids along, but being out and about after dark probably has something to do with it. It's great that the oil workers -- party guys and family guys alike -- always tip big, too...mostly twenties, sometimes a fifty, and I have yet to see anything under a ten. Last New Year's night, I was basically the chauffeur for two oil guys who had me keep the proverbial meter running for about two and a quarter hours while I drove them around to one bar, then another, and finally to a strip club. They handed me a $100 bill after I dropped them off at their motel room (on top of their $72 fare, $54 of which went to me), which _really_ made my night! So they make great money in the oil industry, but like you said, the work gets pretty rough. Different people have different ways of blowing off that stress, I reckon.

Marvellous place, the internet, is it not? You get shat on without discrimination. No pretentiousness, no pandering. Just incessant annihilation.

Dude I love this culture!!! I was born in Mexico and raised in south Texas. I was a defensive nose guard in high school and college and after college went into the oilfield industry and fell in love with it. All my wives were at least 6 feet tall and slender I have produced 6 children and they are all huge aggressive and smart Mexicans. Lol

Really enjoyed this series of films. I love Scotland, I love food/booze and I love a 'fish out of water', like this lassie. I like that she shot a deer, I like that she was out of her depth ( but willing to try) and I like that it had buckfast ice cream! Brilliant docs to watch when yer drunk :)
