Hunting and Foraging: MUNCHIES Guide to Scotland (Episode 4)

Ойын-сауық

Charlet gets an invite to Inshriach House, something of a hipster narnia in the middle of Cairngorms National Park, where a group of Londoners have forsaken the Big Smoke in order to live off the land and forage to their hearts’ content. Reluctantly leaving her new, wholesome group of friends, Charlet travels deeper into the Highlands for the part of the trip she’s been dreading the most-the hunting of her very first roe deer.

I'm a lady.... but I can lez it up for her, YES GIRL. But in all seriousness.... she's the best host they have...her narration, writing, and the emotions in her videos are all so pure. This has easily become my favorite Vice series. Unlike other shows, it's entirely devoid of pretension, and has nothing to prove aside from showing craftsmen doing what they love, and the fruitful results of it. The editing is spot on, and and the genuine beauty of the landscape really comes through.

This was awesome. She was finally human for once. Like not humane or nice etc., but genuinely human. Hunting and gathering are over two million years of our species history and we should never forget that. I wish the world could support this population like that. There would be far fewer mental health issues, crime and obesity. It is our constant disregard for what we evolved to become that causes a lot of these issues. Natural living, with ethical science to further our knowledge would heal so many of this worlds miserys.

Friends, family and contacts in the United States have ridiculed me (and worse) for over two decades for living as I do in Europe. They "pity" me for not having gadgets and frills. I got a new lease on life and wouldn't exchange this for anything. Some have come to visit and actually, some freak out. They just cannot handle all the quiet, peace, polite human contact, nature, culture, and quality of life. Others just blossom here and find they have little anxiety, stress, and have pleasure in little things such as walking, eating, waking up refreshed, et c. Invariably, many ask to smoke even if they are not smokers! (I try to warn them not to -- Paris has a bad climate.) Our country places in Brittany BLEW AN OLD FRIEND'S MIND! He loved meeting the peasant relatives and seeing all the Roman roads, megaliths, vipers, birds of prey, horses, et c.

i don't think i have ever seen a more honest reaction from a person having take their first animal than i did seeing her do it here there was more respect to the animal from the hunter than in most instances she also mentioned how she felt kind of sad but so should every hunter but not out of remorse over killing something but out of respect for the animal

Could be something to do with law and regulation for shooting in the wild in the UK, minimizing noise for example. Or it could be the director wanted him to put it on. Or it could be he just likes having a silencer on his rifle.

  • @r000ty

It's just about shooting without scaring the whole compound imho. It's not the wilderness they are hunting in, it's a confined space for hunting-tourists. They try to keep them as stress free as possible. And maybe dumb for the tourists? Also: That's a (sound) suppressor. Sorry to be a smartass, it just grinds my gears a bit, that most people call everything a silencer. There's a difference: If a shot is silenced, well, you can't hear it, can you? You would need subsonic rounds for that as well, which won't be suited for hunting deer.

INs4Ne2904 Hunting for competition is silly (not that the animal is particularly bothered being dead and all) but hunting for food is something every meat eating animal has done since the begging of time and if people are bothered by it they need to grow up.

I'll never understand people with a distaste for hunting. People say "It takes no skill." What skill does it take to go to a market and buy your food? I have to bust my ass at work and save money to buy gear.. a good gun, accessories, a tree stand, a license, warm clothing to stand out there in -12 degree Minnesota weather. Not to mention the time invested standing out there days on end. 1 shot (more often than not) humanely drops an animal that lived life in the wild how it was supposed to. Real conservation costs money, and a deer tag does more for conservation than bitching online.

I'm a Wisconsin hunter meself. You guys have a very similar hunting culture to ours. They'll just never understand brother. I just don't focus on it and let them eat the venison I put in their spaghetti sauce or sausage ;) I've even given a flaming liberal venison tenderloins once (kabobs on the grill) and he was mad trippin when I told him what it was. It sparked a rather good conversation between us and I pretty much quite literally made him eat his words during that convo.

+saucy05 why do people assume that people hunt for fun? We have a smile because we humanely dropped an animal with extreme precision. A healthy animal that lived it's life to the fullest extent. We're human because ancient primates learned that cooking meat made the meat easier to chew, which means more protein consumption, ie brain growth. We're human because we cook MEAT. Read Michael Pollen, one of google's top 100 most influential people in the world. You sound like a moron. I've never killed an animal for fun. 1 shot to the lungs humanely drops a deer per year that lived a full life and nothing is wasted. I don't support corporate farming. Kindly, fuck off.

+JRScrambo I've always find that a strange conundrum, "go to the supermarket like normal individuals," when those animals were quite literally tortured before they were slaughtered. Hunting is somehow more inhumane? I guess it's based on perception? Many people think the whole posing for pictures thing is morbid or whatever and I have my own opinions on that, but that's a minimal aspect of hunting. I guess like everything in life, it's situational, dependent on the people, I couldn't really give a shit.
