I remember playing this game at a friend's house as a kid! I had no idea how crass it really was until now. Some of the stuff in this game feels like it's from an MTV reality show.

a lot of games from that period felt like that. There was way too much focus on being "edgy" with little concern for whether it meant the games had no longevity

@@thesteelrodent1796 It was like game makers wanted to position their products as "not for children" entertainment to widen the audience. This was the era when NIntendo was the censorship king and the big, old corporation that was the enemy of new, edgy game platforms like PSX and XBOX. Funny how now Sony's position is the bloated censoring platform and Nintendo and Microsoft are the underdog team-up (Cuphead, Ori, even Banjo shows up in his original n64 game on Switch and adult/suggestive games are somehow less censored on Switch than on Playstation)

@@thesteelrodent1796 Most people tend to extrapolate trends linearly. In the 90's and early 2000's, those "end of history" times, we sincerely believed humor would only get edgier over time and that contemporary jokes would merely seem "tame" ten or twenty years later.
Ah yes, Outlaw Golf. A game you really don't want to play in front of your religious grandma on XMAS day. Don't make the same mistake 9 year old Joey Parkhill did!

That hoverboard skateboarding game for the PS2 is the epitome of Sports Games in the 2000s for me. There's an idea that just wouldn't come out of either the two decades before or the two after. And I was going to ask what the hell Stephen Colbert was doing in this game, but then you explained it perfectly. I love the amount of info you have about the weirdest things that you cover.

I made a hoverboard game demo for Blender 2.28c in 2003 that looks very similar but had a more a futuristic aesthetic. Was an amazing time for game dev as a kid, especially with blender just starting to take off.
My brother had Outlaw Golf (regular version). Summer of 2002, I couldn’t sleep before a surgery. Played it all night instead. If you look past the silliness - it’s a really solid golf game for the period. Thanks for letting me see it again. Now I don’t have to try to find and play it again… and be disappointed.
G4… now that was quite a nostalgic kick to the nads
"Obviously it wouldn't be a FAIRWAY to play" ... nice golf pun, Clint!

I think it's interesting to see the representation of "retro gaming" used to be Atari 2600 aesthetics in the early 2000s (3:48) whereas now it would be SNES or PS1 visuals.

You can hear it in the evolution of “retro game music” too, there was a stronger association with Chiptune music specifically and the limited voices of the NES/Game Boy. Now the wave feels more oriented towards the broader and more expressive MIDI soundfonts

The Atari 2600's best selling game (Pac-Man) Was Released in 1982; 21 years prior to 2003. 21 years prior to now would be the year 2000, the year the PS2 was released. The PS2 is as old as the Atari aesthetic is to them as the PS2 is to us. The SNES and PS1 would be closer to PONG in relation to the present, time-wise. Of course time never takes aesthetic or diminishing returns in graphical fidelity into account but it's still a trip.

Love these videos where you revisit the games from 2000s. I was in my mid 20s back then, and seeing these videos - especially where you add the vintge TV footage really brings back memories

Haha. Lee Carvello's Putting Challenge. The store clerk said it's what every kid wants.

Can't say I was expecting you to review Outlaw Golf of all things. It's not just that it's a sports game, it's also a console title; just about every game you've covered was on the PC. I played the second Outlaw Golf on my grandfather's modded Xbox back in 2005 (or was it 2006? I can't remember). It was no Tiger Woods PGA Tour, but it was a fun enough title.
My roommate taped two pieces of cardboard on either side of the analogue stick to make each shot straight.. made the game super easy
