Building a Better PlayStation Classic Console

Ғылым және технология

Much as I like the idea of the Sony PS1 Classic mini console, I was let down by the game selection and overall features. So let's assemble an alternative using a Raspberry Pi and a 3D printed case, no firmware hack required! Build section begins at 01:51 in the video.

As with any project like this there are _tons_ of variations in terms of parts, software, and execution to play with. Let me know what you'd do differently, I'm sure we can collectively come up with something far better! Also, I'm looking into getting a nice 3D printer in the future since I'd love to try making my own case. Would appreciate suggestions.

For menu game artwork and details, I humbly recommend my own game scraper called Skyscraper. It's in the official RetroPie-Setup menu under the Experimental packages (scroll to the bottom). It can do all sorts of crazy things. I personally prefer to install it using the method described at the github page, but as it is now available officially in the menu, some prefer that method. Either way, here's the github page: github.com/muldjord/skyscraper And here's a video showing the Skyscraper compositor in action: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hn14ppp-drbgZZM.html

Hey Clint, I highly Recommend Lulzbot. They are an American made brand from Colorado (shout out to my home state!) and they are pretty much one of the best for Pro-sumer/Professional printers. We have a Tazbot Mini, and it is freaking awesome. You're looking at around 1500, but for quality and dependability, they're worth it.

I would recommend going with a case from Retroflag there a bit bigger coming in around the same size as the nes and snes classic (they even look like them) but they look and feel great. I also have my games loaded on to a external flash drive rather than the sd card this makes transfer a little easier and allows for simpler upgrades down the line in I run out of space.

  • @silverloto6773

@@MegaTechpc I have never said that they were stupid or anything like that. The things is, like the first comment said the cpu of this model of raspberry pi it's faster than the one on the playstation classic, so if someone make their own retro console (as shown in the video) they could perfom other task aside from emulating PS1 titles, such as running an OS, running an frontend arcade os (retropie) to emulate dreamcast and other systems. I never hate on anything, like I said above, nintendo does care for their retro systems (there was a note from devs greeting everyone who hack their system and upload their roms to the console), and even if sony did fail in some aspects with the PS1 Classic (the number of games it came, and not giving some of their best games, even obscure ones with large following, what they deserve. And we yet to see how to add isos to the console), they could surely make it better with enough time and more research. Again, I just love games and almost any console along with pc games (even retro pc and D.O.S games/machines).

It sold me too, for certain. I have an old MAME cabinet I set up almost 10 years ago. It struggles on anything less retro than 16-bit games and is the size of a VCR. This, a total setup of $100 that can play 64-bit games and sized to a deck of cards? And no countless hours of manual modification needed? Definitely time to upgrade!

I bought a Pi 3 after receiving a gift card to some store, and boy, is that little board versatile. After toying around, it became my retro game machine since RetroPie is so simple and well documented. I did install the Pixel desktop, fiddled around with webcam surveillance things, using it as a web server after RetroPie was installed, though.

It boggles my mind why they didn't repurpose the PSTV hardware for the official Classic. The emulation is way better being their own in house solution and Sony already had the hardware and tooling available. They could've slapped it in a new case, changed the UI, and manage to revive a recently discontinued product easily. Not to mention it'd have the added bonus of being connected to the PSN store to allow for purchasing more PS1 titles.

They even have router cards on the inside for proper I/O placement and function on each model case. They have a website, and sell trough Amazon. retroflag.com/ I will get two of them soon, the SFC and the Mega Drive, but more for the fun factor of having a fairly inexpensive system, being able to separate the games from both Nintendo and Sega home consoles and portables, lodged in their respective look-a-like cases. For more serious and varied emulation, i'll go the Nvidia Shield route. It's a well polished product, and a heck of a lot more powerful for emulation.

If you're gonna try a project like this, use a Pi 3B+ (PLUS) rather than a 3B. They run faster by default and may not even need a heatsink due to the integrated metal heat spreader, better 5Ghz Wi-Fi and gigabit ethernet built in, come with a header for Power over Ethernet (PoE), and cost exactly the same price. What's not to love? If tight space and lower power are important then you might consider the Pi 3A+. It should be the same speed as the 3B+ in terms of emulation but it's quite a lot smaller, $10 cheaper, uses less power than even the 3B and has less ports. Of course if you want to go even further there's the Pi Zero, but that is going to struggle emulating the PS1...

Because a fan doesn't have to deal with licensing fees, mass production cost, and profit margins. He's ripping illegally downloaded software and only making a single one for himself. The PS Classic is still shit, but let's not act like there is a level playing field here.

LE-Reborn Remix is just kinda Retropie w/ the added goodie of Kodi 18and netflix plugin compatability :3 but if anyone gets the 3B+ for this? try to look for a heatsink and fan solution and a 3Amp USB psu is a must over a 2.5Amp USB psu

That's exactly what I did. I also bought a PS controller-to-usb adapter and soldered the pins to the original PlayStation's controller ports so I can use original controllers. Even further, I tapped off the PlayStation's original power supply (which wasn't broken) and routed that straight to the Pi3 (so I can use an original power cable). And finally, wired the power LED to work properly and the reset button to actually reset the Pi3. All said, my PlayStation Classic is about as authentic as a retro console gets :)

@@HawaiianKong I'd love to do something like that but also figure out how to connect the PS1's disc drive to the Pi. A system that plays PS1 games from iso *or* from disc, uses the original controllers, and also plays SNES, Genesis, and N64 (with limitations)? Yes please! Edit: Although, if I decide to do this eventually and have the choice, I'd rather use the smaller, rounded PSOne model ( files.catbox.moe/42t0zk.png ) rather than the boxy original PSX.
