Installing a Raspberry Pi inside the PlayStation Classic

In this video, I show you the method I came up with to cleanly install a Raspberry Pi 3 inside the PlayStation Classic! I decided to do this mod because I love the way the PlayStation Classic looks, but hate its terrible emulation performance and game selection.
Now that I have a Raspberry Pi 3 inside of it, not only do I get the great looks of the PlayStation Classic shell, but also great emulation performance and way more games! I currently have about 350 games on my 512GB micro SD card, with 259GB of free space left!
Pre-Configured Retropie image and wiring diagram are available on my website!

Great article from Adafruit about removing the ports on the Pi :
learn.adafruit...
UPDATE: At 20:50 when I talk about the momentary switches being grounded without being pressed, what I actually believe is going on is that the 5V connection from the Pi going to the USB ports on the PS Classic board is flowing back through the PS Classic board and causing the top 2 pads of the momentary switches to receive 5V and causing them to trigger their scripts without actually pressing the button. You should be able to just cut the 5V trace from each USB port on the PS Classic board to eliminate the issue. This is something I didn't realize at the time because I was pre-occupied with filming the video. Thank you and good luck if you try this mod!

PLEASE READ! The base image and wiring diagram are now available on my website! www.retrocution.com/2019/01/02/playstation-classic-retropie-image-and-wiring-diagram/ Here's another version of the mod I did where I created a replacement board from scratch so I wouldn't have to cut the PlayStation Classic board. i.imgur.com/EwA35HS.jpg i.imgur.com/4l3l9IP.jpg In the second picture with the wiring attached you can see where I removed more material from the board I made. This actually allowed me to fit the Pi3 with all ports intact. A little more work required, but it can be done! ***Please keep in mind that when I created this video last year the PlayStation Classic hacking scene wasn't what it is today. This is more of a hobbyist project for people that like to mess around with electronics. If you simply want to mod your PlayStation Classic to run better and have more games I would definitely suggest you use the BleemSync method! I hope you find this video entertaining and inspiring. There are limitless possibilities for the projects you can do with a Raspberry Pi!***

$100 for a Rpi case that requires cutting the Pi to mod? The board in the PS Classic is more powerful than a 3b+, wouldn't it make more sense to wait until the PS Classic is fully hacked and optimized emulators are ported over to it?

  • @MrAsmodath

While the CPU in the Classic is ever so slightly more powerful then the one in the Pi 3 B+, the community and software support is lightyears beyond what it will ever be on the PS Classic board. I do agree that while it is a cool project, it's not a sound financial choice. Great video though.

The PS1 Classic runs at 1.3Ghz, the Pi is 1.4Ghz. The PS1 Classic uses DDR3, whereas the Pi uses DDR2. They are pretty much the same power, except for the fact that the Pi has huge benefits like bluetooth, wifi/ethernet, a mircoSD card slot for much greater onboard storage, 4 USB ports (if you want to connect even larger external drives). The PS1 Classic is pretty handicapped and requires having to take up the second controller port if you want to use external drives (meaning no multiplayer). Plus, as Asmod TEK mentioned, the support for the Pi is lightyears ahead of the PS1 Classic - and will always be.

Just got the PS1 Classic for 35 bucks the other day. It's adorable. And the controllers are WAY more comfortable that I remember the OG skinny boy controllers ever being. I even have zero complaints about the game selection (well, all but Super Puzzle Fighter. That game is on goddamned EVERYTHING. Its slot would have been better suited to something else) It's just.....missing SO. MANY. GAMES. I have over 90 on my 3b right now, with many more to be converted from PBP files and put on there. Well, if I'm gonna put that many PS1 games on it, it needs to not be in the Super Kuma 9000 case it resides in currently. And hell, I've been meaning to find a reason to buy a 3b+. So, not only did your video confirm my suspicion that a diet Pi3 would fit in the case, buy also that the console power/reset and eject buttons could be utilized. I just never imagined it could be done with such finesse. Such gusto. Such goddamned perfection. I thank you Sir. From the bottom of my geeky little heart. You are proof that not all heroes wear capes. Unless you do actually wear a cape. In which case I would say only the BEST heroes wear capes.

This is the second such video of this type that I've watched and I have to say, you young guys are so impressive, where on Earth did you all learn all this shit? Seriously... Are you guys engineers or something? Watching your videos I feel like a complete idiot! Mad respect for what you guys do! it's beautiful to watch, even though I had no clue about half the stuff you were talking about oh, don't get me wrong I'm not an idiot I kind of understand what you're doing even though things got very technical, but wow, very impressive stuff!

Amezing and great mod, but even more amezing is how you killed the psx mini board but still use it to also (symbolically) became part of the raspbarry pie, by using it for ground, led light ,usb connections and for power. Just incredible. Now show this to sony and tell them how psx emulation is really supposed to be,haha !!

If you think about it, the PS Classic came out at 100 bucks, if you spend the money or the 30 dollar Classic, a 40 dollar PI, and a SD card. You're looking at the same amount or a little more for a better option.
