Iron Assault for DOS: Obscure Stop-Motion Mechs of 1995

Ойындар

An LGR retrospective on Iron Assault by the Italian developer, Graffiti! Compared to MS-DOS competitors in '95 like MechWarrior 2 and Earthsiege, it's not super impressive. But parts are worth a look, namely its full motion video cutscenes with miniatures and stop motion animation! The gameplay itself may wear out its welcome before long, but the kitbashed gunpla are too adorable to miss.

Great review LGR! Brings back a ton of nostalgia. The first (and only) commercial game I wrote soundtracks for. All I had at the time was an Amiga and when Graffiti shipped me an Adlib Gold with 18 independent audio channels, I felt I had a music studio at my fingertips. I was asked to only use 9 channels, for compatibility with the earlier OPL2-based cards, and that was still plenty. The dynamic soundtrack idea came from one of the developers (Ivan) and was a great addition. Too bad I didn't get to write more tunes, or make them a bit longer. I was given no indication as to how many different missions, locations and environments would be present in the game. Many of the original Graffiti developers moved to the UK to work for videogames or big banks. Thanks again for stirring up some good memories!

I disagree. MW2 FMV was already mentioned, but that took DD 3 months and around $100k from what I heard. It's all about time/money and getting the right people on the job. Throwing something together in the last two weeks of production in Lightwave or 3D Studio simply wasn't cutting it...even in 1995. Most CG you saw in games of the time wasn't "cutting edge" at all unless it was from some larger, well-funded studio. Most of it was rather mediocre, often rushed. Simply due to the fact that most studios had no dedicated teams or artists for cut scenes or FMV, so regular artists often did double duty. I didn't work on game-related stuff that often (VFX guy at hearth) and I cranked out my fair share of mediocre/ugly shit but it was either full-time on ingame assets or full-time on prerendered/FMV stuff.

It's very easy to imagine people crapping all over this game's cutscenes back then, a lot of us were very dismissive in those days if something wasn't bleeding edge. You should take a look at Shogo, it actually has a point where you can effectively start down a different path for 1 of 2 endings. Before that's there's also a point in the game where you can short cut past a whole level (without cheating), and a few secrets areas around

Loved this video! I drooled over screenshots of this in a PC gaming mag back in the day, being a huge fan of Mechwarrior 2, and seeing it in action, I think I'd have thoroughly enjoyed this! The menu system reminded me so much of Strike Commander, a game I still have the manual for, but not the game nor the box sadly. Was a great faux magazine and fun to read, would love to see an LGR video on this game, would be an immense shot of nostalgia. Though I am just now going to go check to make sure Clint hasn't already made one... let's see if I'm gonna regret posting this..

I never understand the down-votes, I base my vote on the creator and the presentation of the video. If I don't like the game that is not the creators fault, it is the developers. I think LGR delivers top notch content and without him we would never see some of these retro awesome things. I have been a follower for many years, and have never had to down-vote. Why are there down-votes? What am I missing?

Really reminds me of the ROTT engine - different levels seemed to have their own building heights, which were fixed across the whole level just like ROTT. No GADs or altered player heights by the look of it though. The framerate didn't seem too good though. Similar like ROTT they seemed to try to overcome the limitations of the engine through sheer charm and a silly amount of features.
